Author Zora Neale Hurston uses the setting in the novel in order to give the reader a better perspective of the way the characters live. The setting in this novel begins with a family in a small town next to the "Big Creek". The people that live on that side of the creek don't have the opportunity to go to school. They spend their time harvesting cotton and worrying if they have sufficient food to provide their family. These people are not really ranked in society and are often looked down upon. The novel then progresses to Notasulga, which is on the other side of the creek. The town is much bigger and has industrialization. They have trains and schools were children learn to read and write. There was also a different vibe in Notasulga; the people didn't worry as much. The children would play hide and seek, while the others on the other side picked cotton all day. Here the people are literate and are growing up with more opportunities. Throughout the novel, the reader is given the impression that the people that live on the other side of the creek are of lower income and have greater worries that the others in Notasulga.
Whether the setting is in Notasulga or the other side of the creek, the reader automatically feels the difference both in atmosphere and society by the things the people do and talk about. There was a big change in the main character John Buddy as he migrated from one place to another. Once he arrived at Notasulga he automatically began to go to school and dress differently. When he returned to his original home, his family noticed the change in him right away. He was no longer illiterate and was a very presentable and modest young man. Overall the setting was very crucial throughout the novel, without these different locations to compare, the reader wouldn't know the difference between the two towns and the reasons why people do and live the way they do. There is always somewhere to go to become gain a better living. Zora Neale Hurston did an exemplary job by giving us these two settings in the novel. The setting is the first thing the reader imagines while reading the book, if the setting is inconsistent then the reader gets bored and doesn't fully understand what the characters are doing or why they are where they are.
