An Invention that Changed the World

The modern world is surrounded by thousands of electronic devices, many of which deserve a place on a list of significant inventions. The light bulb, however, has changed the world by illuminating the night and making it easier to perform a wide range of activities. People no longer have to restrict their work habits to the period from dawn to dusk. As a result of Thomas Edison's tireless efforts in 187, the world can easily function 4 hours a day. The idea for electric lighting occurred well before Edison's time, however.

In 180, Sir Humphrey Davy discovered that by passing an electric current through strips of metal, he could make them hot enough to glow brightly for a few seconds before burning up. However, this device, known as an arc lamp, was impractical for most uses. The light was simply too bright to be used in residences and most businesses. The lamp also required a tremendous source of power to operate. As time went on, electric generators were invented that could supply the arc lamp with power. Soon, streets and other outdoor public areas were filled with these lamps. However, there was still no suitable light invented for indoor use. Thomas Edison dedicated many years to find a solution to this problem.

The primary hurdle for Edison was creating a long-lasting and high-temperature filament. Edison and his associates tested over 1600 materials including horsehair, coconut fibers, fishing line, and even spider webs to find the best filament. Finally, Edison thought of using carbonized thread as the material. Edison's team inserted the thread into a glass bulb, forced out the air with a vacuum pump, and sealed the glass. When connected to an electric current, the bulb glowed steadily for more than 1 hours. Within a few weeks, Edison improved his bulb allowing it to glow many hours longer.

Light bulb improvements are still being made today. Fluorescent bulbs now operate using only one fourth as much energy as the standard incandescent bulb. These lights also give off 0% less heat and can last up to 1,000 hours. In addition, fluorescent bulbs are offered in a large array of styles and colors. Another new product is the halogen bulb. This bulb produces a much brighter light than a fluorescent or incandescent bulb, though it is more expensive. The improvements of the light bulb are only a small part of its value.

The light bulb is historically significant in many ways. This invention created a society where work and other activities could be performed without the aid of sunlight. Illuminated street signs were utilized to help travelers find their route. Sporting events and other activities could be held in the cooler temperatures of the evening hours. People were also given the sense of security and comfort often associated with light. However, the light bulb's historical significance is mainly due to the impact it had on the 0th century. The light bulb was a catalyst to many other discoveries. Through the use of light bulbs, viewing motion pictures on a large screen became possible. A few years later, the creation of the television replaced radios as the primary source of information. Even laser technology, which is used in industrial processing and surgical procedures, stems from the light bulb. Obviously, the light bulb has more significance than just allowing us to see in the dark. This invention, and the technologies derived from it, has helped develop the global economy and create a society that can operate 4 hours a day.

There are so many people in the world today, which are very different. I am not

talking about the people who are mentally and physically challenged. I am talking about

the people who are the same gender and want to be married with children. Our society

has changed over time, that is a given. How can it change so drastically? Same gender

marriages with children are alarming because children will think that is ok to do it. I will

cover what might go through the child's mind by the following being picked on at

school, what mental thoughts he or she might have, and finally not have that mother or father figure.

There are problems in every child as far as being some kind of social figure at

school. Every child of some sort wants to be that child who sticks out in a good way at

school. Sometimes there are children who stick out in a bad way. They could have

something wrong with them, etc. Then you have those whose parents are different, then it

affects the whole family.(In a formal interview with Jennifer Peluso.) I asked her what her

thoughts of gay couples having children were. She said, " The child would be picked on

more than a normal child would."

I have talked about some social problems at school. I will now talk about some mental thoughts or feelings that the child may have.

What do you think is going on in that poor child's mind? According to Charlotte

J. Patterson of University of Virgina said, " A child who is brought up from abnormal

relationships ( Gay Marriages) will suffer some kind of self- identity disorder." See, the

child will not know if he or she should be loving or have intimate relationships with the

opposite sex. The child will think or maybe more open to be with someone who is gay. In

all reality it is wrong from the bible. Diversity between gays and normal people is that much more.

I have covered what could go through the child's mind. Now I will talk about the mother and father figure.

Who is the mother and who is the father one might ask? It would be really hard

for a child to figure that one out. The child grow up thinking that he or she has only two

mothers or two fathers. When having a child you need that actual mother and father

figure there at all times. The child would not have that at all. How would you explain that

one to the class?(According to New Jersey Court Decision on Gay Parents on Adopting

Children.)"The child is more likely to have problems with the following Drug Abuse,

Depression, Poor Discipline, and confused sexual identity."

I have covered some important factors like being picked on at school, mental

issues of the child, and the mother, father figure. This is a big problem in our society

today and it is not beneficial to the child. The child will have more problems than a

normal child would. In return, the child needs to have a normal life.

The term "Puritanism" denotes not only the religious sect of Congregationalists from "Old England" who wished to "purify" the Anglican Church of its supposed depravity, but also their austerity and strictness in religious conduct. So involved was this severity in social order that the Puritan community of New England had based much of its civil governance upon its very in essence, Calvinistic Protestant religious beliefs and endeavors at religious reformation. In the mean time, they stressed not a clear cut from the England Catholic Church, but rather to serve as a model of Christian society for the rest of the Christian world.

The new "Utopia", in effect, was established in the mindset as if to find a New Jerusalem. Thus, much of the primary documents written, pertinent to the order of the settlements, stressed both "God's word" and adherence to a unifying political body, especially that of the famous quotation in A Modell of Christian Charity written by John Winthrop aboard the Arbella to America "For we must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us." The oration speaks as if that they are being watched by the rest of the Christian world, such that they must live up truthfully to God's words, in order for the community to become a successful model of Christian society. It is evident here, that even before actual Puritan settlement took place that these religious virtues of Puritanism were already deeply planted within the community. On the other hand the Mayflower Compact written in 160, a pact of liberal governance in the new colonies proposed the submission to the will of the majority and "combine ourselves together into a civil Body Politick". Without surprise, such a document was signed by forty-one male adults "solemnly and mutually in the Presence of God". Clearly established is a document that stressed the adherence to political civility and the will "be thought most meet and convenient for the General good of the Colony".

Both primary documents of the epoch of early Puritan settlement, mentions themselves as covenants between community and God. Thus they deeply reflect Puritanic ideology of the colonial era of America. In that respect, the early Puritan settlers were indulged both in the need for social order and establish themselves as a foundation for "true Christianity".

Stone Cold Review

Stone Cold is a book written by Robert Swindells and is a about a kid called Link who becomes homeless and the way he deals with it and how he survives on the street. This book is also about a guy named Shelter who is a crazy ex army dude that goes around killing hobo's.

I thought of Link as a good kid who just wanted a fresh start or a new life. I didn't feel sorry for Link because he made himself homeless and his problems weren't even that serious no one kicked him out of his home it was his choice, and his way of dealing with his problems was stupid as well. A good quote from the book that Link say is "Have you ever seen the famous diagram of a slave ship with slaves crammed like sardines into every square centimetre of space, that's what it was like on our boat." To me this meant that there isn't enough room in this world for homeless people, I know that this is not what was meant by this quote but it is what I thought.

I thought of Shelter as just a normal guy who liked violence, but I think he came across as a crazy person because he killed people although killing people doesn't make you crazy or psycho. People like Shelters character do exist their called serial killers.

The killings stood out for me and the way he got them to come to his apartment was interesting because if you pretend you are someone or are something and are confident people will believe you just like on Catch me if you can.

The ending was ok but it could have been better I don't know how because I'm not a writer but I think that he should of gotten away with it or at least just got a couple of years for trying to kill Link because something weird should of happened like the bodies were gone or something.

The author probably was trying to send us a message about homeless people the message probably was that homeless people are people to and are mistreated and misunderstood and are just trying to get by the best they can.

Stone Cold didn't really change any of my feelings towards homeless people not did it reinforce the way I already felt. Well it probably was realistic I don't see why it isn't.

In the 10s Germany was a centre for modern art and forward thinking architecture. Art styles and schools such as cubism and Dada developed in Germany, and schools of excellent architecture such as the Bauhaus school developed in this liberal and free thinking period. However this all changed in1 due to the rise to power of the Nazis. This essay will examine the effect that the Nazi regime had upon the styles of art and architecture in Germany during their rule.

The Nazis believed that art and architecture would be an important factor in the large propaganda operation they planned to operate. Once Nazis came to power they took control of society and began to spread their influence to many different art forms. These included theatre, architecture, fine art, sculpture and photography.

Soon after the Nazis came to power they began to exert their influence over art forcing their preferred styles to be adopted. The preferred styles chosen by the Nazis were based on Hitlers taste. Hitler saw himself as an art connoisseur and an architecture expert. This was due to his background and everlasting wish to become a professional architect.

This exertion of influence by the Nazis and the mass book burning ordered by propaganda minister Josef Goebbels in 1 served as a warning to many artists that their work would not be welcome in the new Germany. This led to a mass exodus of artistic talent from Germany to many other countries such as France and the USA. In was in this way that Germany was culturally purged of all but a few talented artists who specialised in the styles of art which were preferred by the Nazis left.

After the book burning the Nazis next step toward changing Germanys art was to cleanse all of her art galleries of any art which was not to the Nazis liking. The styles of art disliked by the Nazis were modern art because they believed that they could not be liked by the masses because they had no clear message. The Nazis also believed that modern art was foreign. Art which was disliked by the Nazis, was referred to as degenerate and decadent.

Soon after the Nazis came to power they created a Reich Chamber of Art. This had to approve all artists before they could do any work within Germany. They also had the power to forbid artists from teaching, exhibiting and painting at all. These powers were enforced by the Gestapo who carried out random checks on artists.

The Nazis were very clear on which styles of art they liked. These were the classical styles copied from the ancient Romans and the ancient Greeks. The Nazis also favoured Renaissance art because it projected the same messages as those of the Greeks and Romans. The reason that these styles were preferred was that they seemed to reflect a traditional period of great and strong empires. The creation of a strong and mighty empire containing the whole of Europe like that created by the Romans was something, which the Nazis were striving towards. Usually however they Nazis were not satisfied with the pieces from the Greco-Roman era and sought to exaggerate them, sometimes to ludicrous extremes.

Notable artists and pieces included Thoraks sculptures destined for the pediment of the Nazi party headquarters. The male figures in this piece are, with most German art from this period strong, muscular, masculine and representative of the ideal Aryan form. As with most art of this type the figures are nude this is to show their ideal forms. The overall scale of this piece was massive to reflect the supposed grandeur and prestige of the Nazi regime

The retreat in interest rates set in train by the dramatic events on domestic financial markets this week will lower the funding costs of smaller local banks and hence modestly improve their profit margins, while it nibbles at the revenues earned from surplus funds placed on the interbank market by their bigger rivals.

If that sounds like a break for beleaguered small banks, it is. But the jury is out on how long the relief will last. And, meanwhile, a raft of far more enduring competitive pressures in the industry remain, all of which collectively spell danger for small lenders in an environment in which scale is becoming steadily more important.

Such cautions aside, however, one outcome of the latest turmoil on markets has been the collapse of interest rates on the wholesale money market to all-time lows since data records have been maintained. Three-month Hong Kong Interbank Offered Rates (Hibor) plunged to just 0.88 per cent. That is good for small banks who raise a higher proportion of their deposit funding on the wholesale Hibor market, or by offering time-deposits that earn interest rates that are linked to Hibor. Lower Hibor rates will translate into lower interest rates paid by the banks on those deposits.

But it is not good for big banks that have a higher proportion of their deposits in current or savings accounts which already cost them zero or close to zero (0.01 per cent on savings deposits). In the absence of much loan demand, these big deposit banks must try to earn money on their surplus funds by offering them to smaller rivals, who come for their funds to the wholesale market where rates are now tumbling. That is one side of the interest rate story that unfolded on the market this week. Another side to the story, however, is that across the board, lenders in Hong Kong have managed to insulate themselves to some degree to the retreat in interest rates that has been under way for two years now, by reducing their benchmark prime, or best lending rate - the rate they charge a mythical best borrower - at a slower pace than they have reduced the rates they pay their depositors. Since prime rates remained at 5 per cent this week, and are unlikely to go lower even if the latest interest rate settings remain in place, the funding ``spread widened to 4.1 per cent - a level last seen more than 11 years ago. Why are banks unlikely to respond to latest falls in interest rates by cutting prime? Firstly, they may argue with some justification that Hibor rates are extremely volatile, and what comes down in such a sudden rush, can be expected to go back up again - if not in quite such as rush, at least gradually.

More importantly, however, home loans float at a discount to prime, and many lenders are earning close to zero net interest income on a sizeable portion of their mortgage portfolios. Any further cuts to prime could put these loans close to red-alert territory.

Those home-buyers postponing their plans in the hope of even lower funding costs in the wake of the latest fall in interest rates should weigh these unlikely expectations against the mounting evidence that the property market is turning.

INTRO 1 Person

The feature film The usual suspects relies on its unusual twist at the end for its major impact upon the audience. This twist depends on our reading of Kevin Spacey's disabled character Heath, He is seen as unlikely to be a suspect throughout the movie because our attitudes tend to read handicapped people as less capable than others. . Although we don't identify with the central character Heath, we identify with the dominant cultural readings of his type. The film represents the way in which society silences and marginalizes disabled people and in this case, how a criminal uses this societal attitude to his own advantage by pretending to suffer from disability.

INTRO nd Person

The filmmaker's particular values are shaped throughout the film, often supporting the theory of how society silences disabled people. The film suggests that an absence of values can sometimes allow people to exploit those who live by moral guidelines. Kevin Spacey's character Heath is quite easily overlooked within the film as the mastermind criminal as people often discount handicapped qualities. The filmmaker picks up on this fact, not to encourage us to identify with Heath, but more to encourage us to respond naturally towards Spacey's character, which relates to the filmmakers original question, "Are handicapped people really seen as equal"?

Reference 1st Person

In the following scene you are about to witness we see the central character Heath being questioned by the police along side with 4 other common criminals all charged on the same offense. Watch for the way the filmmaker positions us as viewers to respond differently towards the 5 various characters being questioned.

Play the questioning scene

Show drawn image of the scene with Spacey

This particular scene shown here in an illustrated form of the scene involving Spacey's character, It shows how the filmmaker has chosen to represent this character compared to the others. As you saw each unique character seemed to deal with the charge quite humorously, except for that of Spacey's character. The construction of this particular scene was a perfect example of how we as an audience were positioned to respond towards a disabled character.

Relating it to the filmmaker nd person

The scene encouraged us a audience to read him as unlikely to perform such a task, once again promoting the filmmakers opinion on how society feels about disabled persons. Within this shot we can the body language of Spacey's feeding off negative connotations towards the audience. The slanted posture and eyes constantly scanning the floor show the character as insignificant in comparison with the police officer. The vocals expressed throughout this scene

And so……

Nah just all cunted from the cunt

Cause and effect Essay

Driving a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol is one of the most dangerous things you can do. There is a mass of research evidence to show that driving performance and reaction times are seriously affected by alcohol. If you drink and drive, you are not only a danger to yourself but also to your passenger, other road users and pedestrians. In fact, every 0 minutes, someone in this country dies in alcohol-related crash. Every 0 minutes! And last year alone more than one million people are injured in alcohol-related traffic crashes.

Alcohol is a depressant that slows down body reactions and the working

of the brain. Each year drunk driving is responsible for about 5% of these deaths. The risks of drinking are alcohol-related accidents and violence. The effects of alcohol are poor coordination and slurred speech, double vision, decrease of self control loss of consciousness and death.

There are legal consequences due to drinking also. The more a person drinks, the more their ability to make important decisions becomes impaired. After just one drink, a driver can lose their ability to perform the tasks necessary to drive a car. At a certain point, a driver will become illegally intoxicated and can be arrested for attempting to operate a motor vehicle. In every state throughout country there is a legal limit to how much alcohol you can have in your body if you are driving. If you drink and drive you can lose your drivers license and even go to jail.

Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for teens and young adults. More than 5,000 young people die every year in car crashes and thousands more are injured. Drivers who are 16 years old are more than 0 times as likely to have a crash as are other drivers. There are two main reasons why teens are at a higher percentage for being in a car crash. Which are lack of driving experience and their tendency to take risks while driving. Teens drive faster and do not control the car as well as more experienced drivers. Their judgment in traffic is often insufficient to avoid a crash. In addition, teens do most of their driving at night, which can be even more difficult. Standard drivers education classes include 0 hours of class-room teaching and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training. This is not enough time to fully train a new driver. Teen drivers are more like to be influence by peers and other stresses and distractions. This can lead to reckless driving behaviors such as speeding, driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, and not wearing safety belts.

There is no safe amount that you can drink and still drive. Even one drink can influence your driving offences. It is often too late by the time they seek help. They face losing their license, having embarrassing court appearances, press coverage and heavy fines. Many are just ordinary people who have a few social drinks, get behind the wheel and then get pulled over by the police. So try to manage your life so that you do not drink and drive. If you go out for a drink, try to go somewhere that you can reach either on foot or by public transportation. Think about sharing the driving on different days with a group of people so that you can take turns at driving. If you do drink even though you meant not to, and you went out with your vehicle, consider taking a taxi and leave your vehicle behind. This is a whole lot cheaper than getting prosecuted!
