The Significance of the Title

"To Kill a Mockingbird"

When we hear the words "To Kill a Mockingbird", we think of one thing. A timeless classic, a literary work of art that in some way has touched us all, whether we were forced to read it in school or read it for enjoyment. But do we truly know what the significance of the title is? In this novel, Boo Radley and Tom Robinson are portrayed as the "mockingbirds" of the story, and the title suggests that the whole message of the book is revealed to us in the four little words of the title.

Towards the beginning of the story, Atticus tells the children at the dinner table that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird because they don't do anything to anyone except sing and make a nice sound. Not very far after he says this, we realize that Boo Radley could be depicted as a mockingbird. Despite what the children think of him, he does not associate let alone harm or upset anyone in any way. If he does anything throughout the whole story, it is try to help the children when they are in need . When Ms. Maudie's house burnt down, Boo was there to wrap Scout with a blanket. When Jem's pants got caught in the fence, Boo was there to fold them and sew them up from him. Even when the children were almost harmed by Mr. Ewell, Boo resorted to the extreme action of killing him! If anything resembles a selfless mockingbird, it is Boo Radley and his infamous yet humble ways of saving the day. Just like in chapter 1, Scout opens by intricately explaining how Boo carried himself in a unassuming and shy manner when walking in their house. "Every move he made was uncertain, as if he were not sure his hands and feet could make proper contact with what they touched."

Another character that could be compared to a mockingbird is Tom Robinson. He has never caused harm to anyone in anyway at all in the city of Maycomb. Though he was put through a great deal of wrongful accusation, interrogation, and judgment, nothing was ever proven that he ever did anything but be courteous to the people of Maycomb. This behavior is analogous to the mockingbird because he did nothing except help Mayella whenever she asked him to help her do something when he walked by. A straightforward frustration is clear when we read this Why would this poor man be indicted of this when he was such a harmless, good person? It is left for us to wonder, but justice is gotten in the end when the cause Tom's strife (Mr. Ewell) is killed the other mockingbird character (Boo Radley) rightfully defends the children and silences a horrible man for good. As Atticus so rightfully and truthfully comments about his client, Tom Robinson was a "..quiet, respectable, humble Negro who never harmed anyone, unless harming someone is doing the right thing…".

Even the title suggests that a mockingbird character will be killed. "To Kill a Mockingbird" means that a major character will be killed or kill, both of which happens to both mockingbirds. Tom Robinson, the man who never even thought of or tried to do anything to anyone except help them, was killed because he tried to rightfully defend himself. Boo Radley, the man who's family was the mystery of the town and the victim of malicious rumors and speculations, killed to defend the children whom he so amorously admired and wanted to be in contact with. Both men, considered the mockingbirds of this story, either kill or get killed in the story for freedom, justice, and impartiality for doing what is right and not doing anything except "making a nice noise for us to listen to".

In this novel, Boo and Tom are portrayed as the mockingbirds, and it could be presumed that the whole title gives us very much insight on the entire plot of the book. If the title were called anything else, this story wouldn't nearly be as emotional and have as much poignant meaning as it really does. Harper Lee was very clever and precise in choosing this title and it has made all the difference in the book's mood and sentiment.

Reality TV---Dehumanizing?

Dehumanizing TV

The term "Reality TV?is a classic marketing label. It has nothing to do with reality, but the media uses the term, so it sticks. It is an extended game show, or "human experiment calling itself something else,?that zooms in on the small percent of privacy within the common individual, destroying the ideals of human dignity (Ford). These new ‘reality?shows have warped humanization by "plastering? imperfect lives, nasty arguments, and aberrant hook-ups all over public television in series such as "Survivor? "Big Brother? and "Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire??(Quindlen). Entertainment today no longer promotes lighthearted humor and family values. Through ‘reality TV?people want to see others succumb to their fears for moneynot survival. If dehumanization reduces human beings from civil to savage, then reality TV dehumanizes; if indignation is the twinge of shame at the loss of privacy, then reality TV is damaging to human dignity. Therefore, it can be resolved that reality TV destroys the human morale.

Some claims advocate that reality TV helps educate and inform. For some, it is a matter of comfort watching someone else go through common drama in life. Educationally speaking, watching "Boot Camp? a military-training "survivor?look-a-like, or "The 100 House? the exposition of a family spending three months with 100s-era technology, can edify people allowing them to observe an attempt at survival in a more primitive environment. On an informative basis, a society can learn more about itself and it constituents by watching reality shows depict the mundane lives of its people. In 001, Russians suggested that its viewers watched reality shows because it provided a "window into the middle of a new generation and (showed) what kind of society Russia had become (Daniszewski).?Conventional wisdom is that TV exists as a medium for those with nothing better to do with themselves; however, in a society "with people who have a to-do list instead of a life...within a nation living at warp speed,?to experience and observe life's drama on the TV screen is much more efficient!? "All the passion, none of the pain or perspiration (Quindlen).?Under these justifications, the fact that some reality TV shows are educational and informative is a concession.

Ultimately, reality TV both dehumanizes and damages human dignity. Dehumanization and human indignation exist as two distinctly different concepts. The destruction of ideals that represents the human race and destruction of ideals that represents man's moral standards exist on two totally different levels. One of the two relates to mankind as a whole versus nature, while the latter deals with one man's culture versus another's; therefore, whether or not reality TV is dehumanizing or damaging to human dignity depends upon given circumstances. When "Survivor?began casting, it had a psychologist analyze personalities and the emotional stability of each candidate. "You...don't want boring, normal people on,?said Dr. Kate Wachs, a media psychologist in Chicago (Rohan). This pre-screening of cast members helps come to the conclusion that reality TV is staged to a point of intended indignationto decide who is normal and who is above or below normality is to challenge one man's culture against another man's. Handpicking people with contradicting personalities and stuffing them into an unnatural life together, then claiming that it is reality serves no purpose but to set up an artificial, morally degrading situation that attracts commercial attention and general curiosityreality TV is a shallow game of manipulation amongst men and women.

"Survivor? "Big Brother? and "Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire?? are three infamous examples of the exploding reality TV genre. All three also represent prime examples of damage to human dignity. In "Survivor? the concept of a person viciously competing against another person detracts from civility all together and brings the situation down to the level of savagery. In "Big Brother? it is primarily about intrusion of privacy, which is the most important element in human civility. Violating this would mean affecting human dignity. Forcing people to be silent while stuffed together in a prison-like home deforms human nature, since human beings are social animals. Likewise, "Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire??forces emotions to blend simply for entertainment, thus promoting artificial and superficial relationships and emotions. This type of entertainment affects moral standards that people have about love, marriage, and relationships in general. Encouraging the antithesis of such moral beliefs disrespects human dignity and strikes out at deeply rooted values in modern society.

Entertainment exists because of the fact that people like to ridicule the anomalies in life thus creating what people call humor. Due to this, focusing on sexuality, the use of the lavatory, and petty drama is considered entertaining; however, reality TV, created solely for this kind of entertainment, damages human dignity as it affects the moral standards of people and modern society. The Nightmare

I couldnt wait for my family and I to take our annual vacation. It was during those times that I enjoyed myself most. I had anticipated this vacation to be the best. My parents and my brother packed our suitcases into the white family van. After all, I was going to Disney World, which was the greatest place in the world. Little did I know I was about to embark on a journey that would leave a permanent scar in my memory. The incident took place more than twelve years ago, yet I can recall the date and time as if it were yesterday. After a whole day in a car we finally arrived. The date, Saturday, June 0, 188; at 00 in the afternoon. The sun was at its peak and felt as if it was hot enough to fry an egg in the middle of the street.

As I walked to the park of all the fun and good times, a large doughy hand reached down to grab mine. I began to panic. My palms began to sweat and I could feel my heart pumping wildly. This monster before me was huge. I was only six years old, a little skinny girl. I had never been so frightened. The closer the hand got to mine the more intense my heartbeat. The faster my heart raced, the more frightened I became. I could hear my mothers sweet, faint voice from beside me saying, Go ahead, honey, shake his hand. I remember looking at her and then looking at the hand getting closer to me. I couldn't take the fear anymore and immediately took off like a bolt of lightening. I was running to save my life. I ran through hordes of people who were talking so loudly I couldnt hear myself think. I had no idea where I was going. The sweet smell of cotton candy was in the air. I could feel gum underneath my shoes and I could see traces of peanuts on the ground. I continued to run faster and faster. As I continued to run I could hear a song on the loud speakers repeating the same words over and over again. The words were simple yet very agitating. "Its a small world after all, its a small world after all, its a small world after all, and it's a small world after all." Those words rang in my mind and I can still hear them today.

There were lots of other kids around that looked to be my age having the time of their lives. Yet I was beyond frustration and was having the worst time of my life. I eventually slowed down to take a closer look at my surroundings. Just when I thought it was safe I saw another giant coming my way. This giant was almost identical to the one that had approached me before, but it wore a dress with polka dots on it and a big red bow was sitting at the top of its head. It appeared as though it was trying to get me too. Its funny because over the hundreds and thousands of voices in the air I could, again, hear my mothers voice. The sweet, faint, sound of her voice I had heard once before had changed into a voice of frustration and anger. She had to go through the same crowds of people I was going through to catch me. "Kasia come back", she yelled She was pleading for me to stop. She didnt understand that my feet were unable to stop running. She didnt understand that each time I tried to stop another giant quickly approached me with a huge smile, resembling that of the Joker from Batman. She didnt realize I had to continue my journey into the unknown. I had to run as if I was on some great mission for the FBI. This great mission would decide whether I lived or died.

Something strange happened next. I thought I had lost the giants and that I was safe. I said to myself in a whisper that if I could run up the approaching steps, I would be able to see if the coast was clear. I remembered the last time I stopped to look around another giant came in my midst. This time I had to be smarter than before. I ran up the steps while hardly breathing. After catching two good breaths, I turned around, only to see the face of my mother who looked as if she could use a glass of water. She had sweat popping out from everywhere. She quickly grabbed me and began to ask me why I had run off so far. I tried explaining to her that those giants she wanted me to take pictures with didnt seem friendly to me at all. They had big ears, big noses, and feet the size of elephants, and the biggest feet Id ever seen. She explained to me that they were harmless and that I had nothing to be afraid of. I wanted to believe her, but I couldnt. I simply asked that we cut our day short and go back to the hotel. She complied if for no other reason than she was pretty tired herself. The rest of my family quickly gathered around me with looks of aggravation since I was the cause of their entire day being ruined. I didnt care because I was getting ready to leave the place that brought much turmoil to my life, the place that many referred to as the greatest spot on earth. I was leaving Disney World, where memories are made, nightmares emerge, and dreams turn to disaster.

Expectations are that we will see further changes in business and work. Important advances have been made during the last decade and we can expect much more, especially while globalization keeps moving businesses everywhere in competitive situations where knowledgeable, effective behavior has come to prove to be as important as the company's other essential assets. Effective behavior has provided competitive edge. "Future changes will come from information technology (IT) and artificial intelligence developments", said Karl M. Wiig, author of various articles regarding management and future. However, more important changes are expected in people-centric practices to build, apply, and deploy understanding for support of innovative and effective knowledge -intense work. In the corporate world we can already see the increasing requirements for knowledge to deliver competitive work.

Even in an era when technology is advancing and creating management changes, managers will continue to need to identify managerial skills. Many of these skills need to be developed and extended to take account of changing organization structures, the changes in work due to technology, and the changing pattern of the world trade. Particularly communication skills will be even more important in the future. Some others skills to be focus on are

• Technology skills Future managers will need to understand the developing technology in order to understand the potential use in their organization and to understand technological solutions for when being put forward.

• Leadership skills It is considered that more emphasis should be placed on the development of leadership and mentoring skills amongst manager in the future.

• Entrepreneurship Entrepreneurship skills are acquired in order to be able to identify opportunities for the own organization and to take advantage of those possible opportunities.

Other skills that require greater emphasis in the future include, being open-minded in order to consider all options and working methods, and to have knowledge regarding risk assessment and develop risk management skills. In addition, it is important to be open to share information and work in partnerships, to be able to identify the skills and requirements by employees, to be confident and proactive, and to have self-commitment to the manager's own professional development as leaders.

Another essential skill to know is the use of time. Technology enables information to be available quicker and enables global communication on an all-day- around basis. It is important for managers to take quality time out to undertake strategic thinking both as an individual manager and as part of the manager's team.

Developing technology has made it possible for people to work over distance and to network efficiently. Now, people can communicate globally and organizations are increasingly working on a 4/7 basis and apparently this trend w will continue. Physical premises are becoming less important and this allows business to compete with larger companies.

On the other side, young people that are coming out of school will become increasingly IT literate and able to understand and use the new technology that will be used at the current moment.

After some research, I found out that meeting the need of the customer is and will continue to be the key factor leading to the success of any organization. Moreover, employees are becoming aware of the importance of their customers needs and also of the internal customer relation. It is foreseen that this emphasis on the customer will become even more important in the future.

The past fifteen years has seen an increasing development of management system standards and identification of opportunities for improvement. As a result, employees have been given more responsibility. In addition, there has been a trend focusing on teamwork. In the future, all these patterns will probably continue to increase. This will involve establishing and setting appropriate performance measures, maintaining records up to date. New technology is making it easier to record and monitor performance measures, show trends, and makes comparisons.

Globalization pressures have changed business and consecutively, work world wide. The Internet has been an important factor in many aspects. One of them is that it helps companies to find good and knowledgeable candidates for crucial positions within the organization. We still need to work on learning and understanding what motivates individuals and how to integrate individual goals with those of the organization. The corporate world is discovering new ways to organize work and interpersonal relationships to maximize opportunities for employees to deliver their best.

As Shakespearean adaptations go, its not quite as odd as moving The Tempest to another planet (as in Forbidden Planet) or Hamlet to a Canadian brewery (the secret subtext of Strange Brew), but its still safe to say no one was expecting a version of The Taming of the Shrew set in an American high school. But unlike the previously mentioned films, 10 Things I Hate About You at least gives the Bard screen credit for his contribution to the story. In 10 Things I Hate About You, Bianca Stratford (Larisa Oleynik) is a tenth grader who has never gone on a date, as her parents have a little rule where Bianca isnt allowed to go out with boys until her older sister gets a boyfriend. The problem is, while her older sister Kat (Julia Stiles) is attractive and intelligent, shes also a mean-spirited misanthrope who rubs nearly everyone the wrong way especially boys. But Bianca and the guy she has her eye on, Joey Donner (Andrew Keegan), are eager to get their romance on the road, so Joey fixes Kat up with Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger), a new kid in town who may be just bitter and mysterious enough to suit her. 10 Things I Hate About You is the first feature film for director Gil Junger, who previously worked extensively in television, including episodes of Dharma and Greg, Ellen, and Blossom. Mark Deming

The title 10 Things I Hate About You just begs for groan-inducing puns about its films quality. As it turns out, most of them are deserved. Another attempt to carbon copy the formula of the sleeper hit Clueless, which set Jane Austens Emma among the pastels of modern teenagerhood, 10 Things offers a bubblegum update of William Shakespeares Taming of the Shrew. While one shouldnt look for verisimilitude in a high school comedy, this one is even more of a caricature of real teen life than most. Its asking a lot to consider Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles, the only cast members with genuine presence, the loser outcasts of their school. But whats worse is that they and their cohorts (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Larisa Oleynik) have such confused motivations and wrongheaded impulses that they often act completely out of character, leaving the movie with little internal consistency. Or perhaps its just that this particular Shakespeare text shouldnt be updated What father makes a rule that one of his daughters cant date until after the other and why would his daughters view this as an insurmountable edict? Still, 10 Things is better than these weakest parts; it has some charming moments mixed in with the extreme teen stereotypes at its core. And its valuable if only for announcing the arrival of Stiles and Ledger she a non-traditional beauty with spunk, he a young Aussie channeling the charm of Mel Gibson. If nothing else, there are at least ten things to like about them. Derek Armstrong

A Tragedy Waiting to Happen

The results of this horrible disaster left her disfigured. Her face will never look the same, nor will she ever have the every-day luxury of having a full head of hair again. She is not ashamed of her disfigurements, though; she does not conceal it because she wants to encourage people to question her about what happened, so she can tell her story… She was a Resident's Assistant at Seton Hall University, awoken on a Wednesday night in January of 000 to a fire alarm. She was not worried, though, because it was not uncommon for this particular university to have false fire alarms go off. After she had woken up, she did what she was supposed to do as an R.A. and investigated the situation. When she shockingly found definite signs of a fire that happened to be growing very rapidly, she immediately notified public safety. It was not much longer before she realized that if she did not make the effort to go and wake the students further down the hall, then they probably would never wake up. The alarm was not loud enough to get them up, and they also had more than likely been partying earlier that night, so that factor would also lessen their chances of waking up to the alarm. This brave girl then went above and beyond what she had to do and started going door-to-door as the fire grew fiercer, waking the students up. She continued to save the lives of numerous individuals until she was overcome by smoke. The fire did end up giving her second and third degree burns, but she miraculously made it out alive. Unfortunately, she was certainly not the only one that was injured, and there were even a few deaths. According to the website Boland Hall, the fire "claimed the lives of three students

Morgan

and injured fifty-eight others." Boland Hall also describes that horrific day in January at Seton Hall University as being "the darkest day in its history." The brave R.A. likes to tell the story of this dark day because it has now made her an advocate of fire safety. That night was a rude awakening of the major changes that Seton Hall University, as well as many other campuses, needed to undergo. Muskingum College is one campus that still needs to undergo some of these changes and make some significant improvements with fire safety.

Fire safety at Muskingum College is not taken seriously enough. Bruce Sindeldecker, the fire chief at Perry Township, recalls a time when he went on a fire run with New Concord Fire Department. It occurred about a year ago at Kelley Hall, "I was completely amazed to find that, despite the fire alarm, the cooks continued working and completely ignored the chance of an actual fire." People have become so nonchalant about these serious situations because of the high occurrence of false alarms. A volunteer firefighter for N.C.F.D., Eli Shegog, verifies this, "When I first joined the department we had a false fire alarm at Muskingum College at least every weekend." He also recalls circumstances similar to this about a year ago, "Every Wednesday we had to go to a false fire alarm at the same location on Muskingum's Campus, until the wrongdoer was finally caught." Lack of training and education is also a problem with fire safety on our campus. The immediate effect of this lack of knowledge and carefree attitudes is a greater chance for false fire alarms. The ultimate effect of this would, sad enough, be a repeat of the Seton Hall fire.

The ideal solution to these problems is mandatory evacuation for each and every time the fire alarm goes off, and educating the staff and students on fire awareness. Mandatory evacuation would dramatically reduce the amount of false fire alarms because if certain

Morgan

individuals came to realize that pulling the fire alarm meant he or she absolutely had to evacuate, then he/she would stop doing it, or his or her peers would force that individual to stop. The key to mandatory evacuation is having a policy concerning this that the resident hall staff members understand that he/she must enforce it. To accomplish this we must first train our resident hall staff members. According to the Seton Hall University Website, they are a thriving example of this, "Our residence hall staff members participate in a minimum of eight hours of training related to fire safety." Chief Sindeldecker also suggests that there be "at least two drills per year in all residence halls." This would teach students how to properly evacuate the halls, and keep the students aware of the fire procedure. Purchasing new equipment and checking on the current equipment would also help with fire safety.

Many argue that evacuation is unnecessary and sometimes even cruel to students during bad weather conditions. It must be realized that if sacrificing a few minutes on one's time while standing in the cold will prevent another tragedy, then suck it up. It is not worth the risk. Also, it is hardly an issue because once it is realized that everyone must evacuate, than false fire alarms will almost be non-existent. Muskingum College currently has a policy of a fine for students who refuse to leave the room during a fire drill. This is certainly a good start, but it definitely needs to be enforced. This would be more likely if residence hall staff members were better educated. Everything boils down to the need for Muskingum College to act now; we need to learn from the mistakes of other campuses, rather than experience the tragedy all over again.

"The Club" by David Williamson is an exciting and very amusing play that goes behind shadowed doors, beyond the thousands of screaming fans, and exposes the wheeling and dealing that goes on inside the committee room of a club that's in turmoil. "The Club" is based around the Collingwood Football Club. A club that was once one of the greatest football clubs in the VFL, but is now a club that's fans have been eagerly waiting for a premiership for 1 years. The play highlights how a club can get so greedy and so caught up in winning a premiership that they would be quite willing to throw history, loyalty and tradition out the window to bring home the flag to their fans.

From the very beginning of the play we see that power is a big issue, especially power in numbers. In the first scene on page 10 we read a classic example of this, where Danny(after finding out that Laurie might be getting sacked) says "It means that if that bloody committee of yours gives Laurie the boot tonight then you don't have a team tomorrow." Not only does this demonstrate the effectiveness of power in numbers, it also displays that clashes between powers in a large organisations (such as Collingwood Football Club) can result in full blown anarchy. Ted realises that this will result in bedlam on page 11 where he states "There's enough industrial anarchy at large without us copping it on the football field." The play also exposes how power can lead to corruption and how it can be used as a tool to get what you want. We read about a prime example of this where Ted uses his presidential powers to influence the selection committee to pick Geoff Hayward in the team. The middle section of the play also reveals how the fall of power and the lack of success are usually blamed on someone small and insignificant (compared to the powerhouses of the organisation.) In this case the person happens to be poor old Laurie, the passionate ex-player and current coach. It really identifies to the reader that with power and a connection with the press you can make a victim look like a criminal and a criminal look like a victim.

"The Club" is about Melbourne and with Melbourne comes tradition, decades of VFL and AFL legends that were idolized by thousands of loyal fans, men that played out of pure passion and devotion for the game and not for the glamour and the money. As you would expect one of the main themes in "The Club" is

tradition. Each character in the play has one or more views, thoughts and ideas about tradition, some of which are more universal, other which are less universal through out the play. In "The Club" tradition is portrayed as the opposite to progress and success. By this I mean that "The Club" infers that to achieve and succeed in this world, tradition must be abandoned. For example Laurie blames old tradition for his failure to win a premiership "you and your cronies would let me buy player." Jock then replies "We were upholding an old tradition, it was wrong, but we believed in it." "The Club" shows us how tradition can cause uproars in the real world, it identifies how it shows disrespect to the legends of the club, however it asks the question "how else can a club like this succeed with out offending the legends and without changing tradition?"

David William presents many themes that are very relevant to modern day Australia; some of these themes are even more relevant now than they were in the 70's. Williamson shows us that there is more to AFL than a group of guys in tight shorts with huge egos. He raises very interesting points about traditions and how the can affect the success of a team or organisation. Williamson shows how the desire for success can just let the human mind completely forget about loyalty, friendship and tradition. By comparing modern AFL to "The Club" we can see what Williamson's thoughts are about the future of football. And unless the AFL makes a sudden change in the next few years then his thoughts are nearly 100% correct, Williamson believed that the game was going to become more and more about money and politics and he was correct, the game is becoming more and more about politics and money as it proceeds further into the 1st century

Assessing learners and learning

Everybody is questioning the effectiveness and fairness of the traditional way of evaluation. Especially methods like multiple choice where the line between real knowledge learned by students and the ability to answer these kinds of test is really thin. The discussion about the fairness is quite obvious if we think that a province like Alberta has provincial exams for all students without considering special learners or particular focuses and interests of students. However we have to agree that evaluation has its own values and the knowledge of them will enrich the discussion about the establishment of new forms of evaluation based on fairness and effectiveness.

The motivational significance of evaluation is mostly related with the way its address basic psychological needs like motivation that constitutes an inseparable part of the educational situation.

For the purpose of this discussion we will categorize the values at work in learning situation into four groups

ɨ Intrinsic values of learning, linked to the need for mastery and control of environment.

ɨ Values connected with self-image.

ɨ Social values associated with approval or censure of significant figures.

ɨ Values related with rewards and punishment

Intrinsic values

The criticism to which evaluation in school has been subjected has focused its extrinsic values and ignored its intrinsic ones. Studies have proved that students are very much interested in having their performance evaluated. Psychologists accept the premise that the individual harbors a basic need of evaluation of his ability and knowledge. There is a strong bound between evaluation, performance and evaluation. The greater the significance attributed to the expected evaluation, the higher motivation.

Evaluation helps students to address a basic need for social comparison. There are two kinds of information given through evaluation comparison with others and self-comparison. Research has shown that when the individual is ambiguous about how to evaluate himself, he does in fact compare him self with others.

Values connected with self-image

The need for cognitive clarity drives a person towards self-examination, social comparison and the need for self-enhancement. Success in school is central for self-image young people in our society, and school grades are the clearest expressions of this success. The student who seeks enhance himself will make an effort to achieve high grades and avoid low ones. Indeed, if the student is not satisfied with his auto evaluation he will seek an outside evaluation to satisfy his need of enhancement.

Social value of the grades

The implications of evaluation for cognitive knowledge and level of self-esteem are unquestionable. Alongside these, the approval or censure product of the grades itself by significant figures in the student's social life.

The motivational effects related to social approval will be stronger the more the individual relegates importance to regard of other. This behavior obviously will vary according to age, sex, and educational and social level. Parents' approval, for example, will be most important in the primary grades. The approval of teachers and peers grows in importance during the school years, and particularly by the end of elementary the approval has a lot of weight. It also appears that teachers' approval it seems to be more important for girls than boys and for good students than weaker students, especially in elementary.

Values related with reward and punishment

Rewards and punishment are inevitable resultants of evaluation. Even when the grade is not accompanied with a specific reward or punishment, there is a tacit one. A high grade usually comes along with the approval of the social group, or with more free time to pursue own affairs. More importantly, the long term implications of good grades are matter like better high schools, better universities or good employment prospective.

As we can see in this small brief of the values associate with evaluation there are basic values associated with it. The necessity of find alternative methods of evaluation, which can include and satisfy all the students, is fact. However we cannot forget that evaluation address basic needs like motivation, social approval, necessity of comparison and self-esteem, thus whatever it will be the new methods of evaluation must address these basic needs.

Ø Brutal

It goes against my values to execute an evil deed,

But hate has overcome me... I'm the root that it feeds.

You're like a contaminated ocean with no fish,

I'm the remedy for the contamination… I love destroying your bliss.

This rhyme is a fusion of expression that will have effect,

It may take time because it defies your intellect.

The articulation of my words has you stupefied,

You added fuel to the fire, my intellectual potential multiplied.

Emotions inside me rage like a storm on Jupiter,

I will obliterate you with my words; watch me glitter.

I can sense it... can you?... feels tense,

Fear surmounts you... I'm beating you because of your insignificance.

My mind is a dictionary filled with verbal abuse,

Exterminating you will be my pleasure… my expression will make you lose.

Silence should be your new magic potion,

May your life be a misery moving in slow motion.

By now you're astounded by my intellectual offences,

I just annihilated you with my composed sentences.

All my life I've lived in a sinful paradise and experienced a vicious reality,

I have no pity because you walked into my domain of merciless brutality.

Ø Praise You

The joy that I receive by looking in your eyes is extravagant,

Just by being with you is magnificent,

The pain that I endure when I'm not with you is extraordinary,

The amount I endure by leaving you is supplementary.

The wonders of the universe is no match for your beauty,

I wonder how such a pretty thing like you sprung from such cruelty,

I often find myself in a fix when I try to describe your finery,

In all this earth, your eyes beat the power of jewels it's a luxury.

Your redolent sends me to a new dimension,

The sweetness is beyond comprehension.

Your succulent looks is a definition of a miracle,

The beauty, I admit, is irresistible.

In your presence I lose control of my five senses,

When I am not with you I find life pointless.

Each time a star sparkles; it resembles your eyes,

It makes me wonder if all the sparkles are lies.

Ø Cohesion

My thoughts, my words will be documented in this cohesion,

It is a collaboration of feelings uttered in total confusion.

This is a glimpse of the mechanics of my mind,

It's impossible to understand, it's like trying to see while you're blind.

There are times when I question my own ability,

I record my thoughts and allow the deterioration of my insecurity.

Perplexed at times, I listen to the right combination of sound waves,

I love experiencing the complex reactions in my mind; it's like an intricate maze.

Chaos is something I dread but it exists within me,

Obtaining order seems like such an eternity.

The incapability of a person to understand me is blissful,

Watching someone attempting to comprehend is exceedingly pitiful.

Peace in my mind is obtained digitally,

The beauty of my inner world is something you should see.

I hope you understand my style of comprehension,

Because… My thoughts, my words are documented in this cohesion.

Ø Bliss

Inside the deep valleys of my brain I submit to digital bliss,

The sound, the pleasure, and the visions I can never miss.

Deep beneath these valleys lies something that is indescribable,

Sound waves interpret the complex feelings… my mind is indestructible.

Peace and thunderous silence is one part of my calmness,

A state of inactivity that resembles sleep completes it… unconsciousness.

Positioned to respond against mental attacks of subliminal gluttony,

My reaction would be to shatter their inner world… pure ecstasy.

My heart readily resonates to the sound of electronic wavelengths,

The ecstatic sensation of tranquility is one of my concealed strengths.

The melodious voice of trance sends me into a world beyond imagination,

I submit to that feeling of elevation… that sweet sensation!

Often in a state of mind in which consciousness is fragile,

Returning to reality is hard… it would take awhile.

Mentally dreaming, emotionally dead, physically awake,

Living in an unreal reality with music that dictates my life… it's all so fake.

Ø Brutal

The beings that think knowledge and logic are all that they possess,

Are the ones who will suffer in my dimension of poetical distress.

It is one of my wishes, that you expereince a long and painful death,

My you suffer by the slow decay of time on your egotistic head.

I hate the very fact of your cursed existence,

My vision of you is nothing but a clear picture of your insignificance.

I detest your close-minded and illiterate perspective of my efforts,

One day your brain will be ruined by the intellectual force I exert.

By the heavens, I pray that your soul will be sentenced to a living hell,

No witch or no remedy will be able to break my incurable spell.

You're not worthy to be respected by a person like me,

Your arrogance has led me to hate you for an eternity.

You robbed me of my gifted talent of fusing words together,

I gained it back; it's stronger and powerful in insulting your existence forever.

Death and destruction will be a part of your mentality,

My words, my mind will assist in the immortal assassination of your mortal insecurity.

Don't be afraid and stop hiding behind your mask of cosmetics,

My words are harsh and I know they're confusing mental tricks.

Your claimed intellectual capability is nothing but the attention you try to find,

Challenge me in a battle of words and then you will realize the power of a growing mind.

These offences are true and the sentences are composed by a logical thinker,

The name is Sharukh Unvalla, the student you doubt and you call a cheater.

Tourism- Task Aboriginals

Since European Settlers came here over a hundred years ago, the Aboriginals have had to change their way of life dramatically. A lot of places that have been sacred to the Aborigines have either been destroyed or ruined in some way by the settlers.

Tourism has had both a negative and positive effect on the Australian Aboriginals. Some good things about it are that by letting people other than Aboriginals see for themselves the way that aboriginals have lived for generations by letting people view the way in which they live.

In the last 50 or so years people have been able to witness sacred rituals and traditions of the Aboriginal people which before then have been kept private from the public.

Indigenous Australia was very different to what it is today. Before the arrival of Europeans from the first fleet. There were no tall buildings, horses, carts, and no travellers from other lands. Australia was a unspoilt country where the people who lived there only took what they needed from the land and nothing else. This ensured that when people next passed that spot there would be food there. Aboriginals lived a hunter and gatherer life. The women and children hunted small animals and collected berries and plants. The men hunted large animals like Kangaroos, emus and turtles. The people who lived on the coast caught fish and many types of shellfish including oysters and mussels.

Because of the change in the environment during the year people would move about every or so months so that the previous place had time to regrow and be ready for the next year. They did not waste anything and every part of the animal or plant was eaten or used for clothing or weapons. Unlike the Europeans it is believed that Aboriginals did not own the land but instead just wandered around and did not put things such as fences and barriers up so the Europeans deduced that no one owned the land and therefore claim ed it for themselves. They used landmarks like lakes and mountains and the knowledge of this was passed on through stories, songs, dancing and art from the elders to the children and had been done this way for thousands of years.

Today's Australia as we know it is dramatically different from then and unlike when the first fleet arrived we now live in tall skyscrapers which range from the coast the middle of the country and in between.

It is no longer one Indigenous culture but a mixture of hundreds of different religions, beliefs and cultures.

When the First Settlers arrived they took the Aboriginals and forced clothing on them and forced them to pretty much live like them. This was of corse entirely alien to the Aboriginals, they had never had to wear so much clothing and sleep with blankets and on beds.

This caused a lot of the group to die out and other groups only survived because they were able to keep some traditions alive while working for the Settlers.

The tourism industry has in the past few years or so begun to focus more on the Aboriginals and has been promoting them overseas more and more. This is both good and bad. Its good because there are a lot of tourists who are only coming to Australia to have a so called Aboriginal experience. They come over for a awhile and actually live the same way as Aboriginals for a short period of time. They hunt and gather and learn to do everything the way it used to be done a hundred or so years ago and is still actually done in some parts of Australia. The bad aspect of the popularity with the Aboriginal way of life is that the more people who know about it then the less sacred it is for the Aborigines and therefore they may feel that they have no privacy anymore.

When you see and speak to Aboriginals all of them have varied opinion on whether or not this is good or not. Some may say that its bad because their way of life has been invaded and it is making them change the way that have lived for hundreds of years. But there are also those who say that it is a good thing because it gives non-Aboriginal people some insight into how they live and to shows people that they are happy as they are and don't necessarily want to change.

"I had allowed their names to function ambiguously" Implies that the ‘authors' name serves a specific purpose.

"I wanted to determine…the functional conditions of specific discursive practice." the purpose of The Order of Things. A primary concern of Foucault's is to examine the context of a discursive event/practice to see what gave rise to it, how it operates, etc…

In doing so, for this piece, he asks many questions (16) but mainly concerns himself with the relationship between the author and the text.

This moves him to two thematic issues concerning Becket's line "what matter who's speaking, someone said, what matter who's speaking". Here the text is privileged over the author. What is important is what is said not who it was said by, leading into two themes.

"writing…has freed itself from the necessity of ‘expression" (16) This posits a change from content confines to "nature of signifier". So what does all of this mean? Foucault goes on to show how this enables writing to break its own boundaries allowing the ‘author' to disappear "…it is primarily concerned with creating an opening where the writing subject endlessly disappears.

The second theme concerns writing and death. Our culture transforms this from writing as protection against death (Arabian Nights lasting all night long forestalling death) to a text killing it author (Barthes). Here he introduces "The Death of the Author" and uses it as a jumping off point to question what the actual death of the author implies How do we analyze, "what do we make", of the things an individual has written - do we include simple laundry lists, an address, shortly, all things an individual has written. Basically this asks what does criticism do without an author? This leads to another question of what is a ‘work' and ‘author's work", and what do we include in it? (164)

Ecriture a remarkably profound attempt to elaborate the conditions of any text, both temporal/spatial contexts. Archaeological makeup is not concerned with authorial intent, argues that this provides the author with certain privileges, which, in turn, leads him to question the gaps left by the author's disappearance.

He begins this exploration with a description of proper names ‘equivalent of a description' or ‘designation'

Description meaningful set of words that refers to a particular object

Designation "Charles Dickens" is a designation of the person who bears that name.

An authors name in particular presents complex problems. For example, changing place of residence, eye color, etc does not change the person the name refers to. However, to change the name of the author of a corpus of works, to say Shakespeare did not write certain sonnets changes the function of his name. In other words, "the author's name is not simply an element of speech" (167)

Function of an author's name group together texts for differentiation, establishes different forms of relationships, characterizes particular manner of discourse (provides status to a specific ‘cultural' discourse"

Our cultural perception uses the ‘author' to elevate specific texts over others (168). A letter has no author. A contract has no author. This shows that an author characterizes specific discourses in a society and moves to an analysis of discourse by keeping just to books/texts with authors. This yields four different features.

1. ‘objects of appropriation' author's name assigned to speeches and books at same time only when the author became punishable; they become a specific form of property. This property is already controlled by a penal code. Turns writing into a weapon.

. ‘author function not universal or constant' some texts require authors which others do not, texts at some points remained anonymous because the ‘real or supposed age' provided authenticity (think aura). 18th century hits and organizes texts based upon ‘established truths and methods of verification' (role of author disappears.

. "author-function" not formed spontaneously we cannot simply attach a discourse to an individual, we must construct the ‘entity' of an author, not all authors are constructed the same, but we employ similar methods now as those in the past. Now, the author is used to explain events; outside influences on the person explain for textual inconsistencies (I.S.A.'s?)

4. "does not refer, purely and simply, to an actual individual" it gives rise to ‘subjective positions' for any to occupy. For a summary of these four features ( a nice list perhaps) see the last full paragraph on page 161.

Inthe present age the various societies of world despite the manifold advancement in science and technology are being persistently plagued by the serious social problems.

The idea of setting up a global university can be a very helpful in solving the serious social problems like Illiteracy ,Poverty and aparthied, sexual abuse, drug addiction.Cooperation amongst various countries is defenitely required to solve these problems.Recent mutual agreement amongst the countries of the world against the terrorism has defenitely improved the condition and reduced the incidence of terrorist attacks.Such mutual cooperation can also be brought about in solving the issues like child labour.

But the major drawback in such a setup can be the it can be a good stage for solving the problem common to the countries but certain problems are there which other societies are not even aware of like dowry system in southwestern asia to which most of the western countries are ignorant .Then why would they like to bear the expenditure for solving these problems which are exclusive to particular nations. So estabilishing such a university calls for rasing above the personal greeds of nations and looking at the problems as challenges against humanity.

The nature of problems for each nation depends on the cultural history of the society and thus needs to be dealt in the similar context. This university can be an ideal place for cross cultural communication and thus creating awareness and respect for other cultures and hence looking at the positive aspects of other cultures and utilizing their methodology for tackling the problems. With the fast modernisation of the societies and the western culture rapidly replacing the traditional cultural values of developing countries like India. The socialists can be aware of the reprecurssions of the exceesive modernisation in advance and can get ready to deal with the future situation and avaoiding to be taken by surprise. Its very important for every society to retain their cultural values because thats what keeps the people of a region united.

The professionals produced by this university can become the forerunners in the governing bodies and thus eliminating the social problems at the grass root level. The exchange of technological and scienitfic knowhow through this university can also play an important role in tackling the problems.

Concludingly, the people of defferent nations of world have alot many problems in common which they have facing and been living with for long periods so there needs to brought in some innovative idea in the direction of solving thedse problems and setting up this university can be really fruitful if all the nations participate with full honesty and share their knowhow with each other.Such a university can be a step in the direction for a stronger and peaceful world of tommorow

Discuss with reference to ‘My Last Duchess'- Robert Browning, ‘Porphyria's lover'- Robert Browning and ‘The Farmers Bride'- Charlotte Mew.

In these three dramatic monologues which we have studied in class, all of them tell stories about men who do not understand the women in their lives, some to such an extent they end up killing them. They vary in the fact that not all the men are as intense as some. One man has even been driven crazy by his lover, but in another one of the poems the man is confused and does not understand why his wife does not want to speak to him. Robert Browning and Charlotte Mew have manage to capture the persona of the characters in the poems very well. At the end of the piece of writing you believe that you have actually come to know the people, there problems, there lives and the reasoning behind what they have done.

‘My Last Duchess' Robert Browning tells the story of a high Duke and his last Duchess who he had killed as she was not impressed with all the possessions and money he had to give her, ‘as if she ranked My gift of a nine-hundred-years-old name With anybody's gift.' She was easy pleased riding her horse, or eating a bowl of cherries. The Duke disapproved of her being nice to everyone and treating them the same way as she treated her husband. The Duke was self-centred and failed to understand his wife character. Without thought he had her murdered. A painting of her was made which only he was allowed to look at and show people. Then she would be officially his object. The poem is written as one long piece of writing with no breaks, this is to show the Dukes arrogance that he did not even have to think about what he had done. In his mind it was no crime to kill a perfectly innocent person, because they treated everyone fairly. The poem has a stanza rhyming scheme, which means four or more rhymed lines repeated as a unit.

The Duke makes it clear from the beginning that he is a very proud man, he boasts about the painting saying twice that it was painted by Fra Pandolf, a famous Renaissance artist. The Duke tells the Counts enquirer that only he can show people the picture, it has a curtain covering it

since none puts by the curtain I have drawn for you, but I.

The Duchess often used to blush and the Duke explains to the Counts enquirer that it was not just the Duke who made her blush and smile. He suggests Fra Pandolf may have flattered her as she is blushing in the painting

Was Courtesy, she thought, and cause enough for calling up that spot of joy.

Often during the poem the Duke pretends he does know what to say, he pauses as if waiting for a reaction A heart - how should I say? - too soon made glad. He asks a rectorical question in this particular example. The Duchess was easily pleased and we get the impression she liked the simple things in life

The dropping of the daylight in the West, The bough of cherries.

The Duke was jealous that his wife treated normal people with the same respect she treated him with. The Duchess was not impressed with money or possessions

As if she ranked My gift of a nine-hundred-years-old name With anybody's gift.

The Duke had a reputation and a lot of self-pride he would not fall down to The Duchesss level and meet and greet any old person

-Een then would be some stooping ; and I choose never to stoop.'
