Personal Essay

The long academic journey from my childhood to a doctoral student pursuing varied research, engaging in both gaining as well as sharing knowledge has been mired in varied experiences, all of which have been part of an enlightening process honing my future academic skills whilst contributing to my concerns on the one hand as well as an attitude of optimism on the other, towards the future of society at large.

From my days as a young college student, having had the privilege of attending the same college as the noble laureate Amartya Sen, my interest in political-economy as one of the key areas of concern was further reinforced through realistic exposition of the state of Indian polity, society and economy by my teachers. My academic interest was further sustained and shaped during my post graduation years at the Jawaharlal Nehru University considered one of the premier universities for advanced studies in India. The research skills developed and the knowledge gained through rigorous course work entailing extensive field-work in many areas helped formulate a broad whilst comprehensive idea of national and international polity and economy.

My journey to M.Phil was possible due to the encouragement I had from my parents who were extremely considerate and equally conscious of the need to educate girls instead of marrying them of as is the trend in a developing country like India where education to a girl child is often considered undesirable due to a plethora of socio-economic factors. My research years since M.Phil were also supported and sustained by the Junior Research Fellowship that was awarded to me by the government of India.

Subsequent fellowships awarded by various organizations and financial support from varied quarters helped me gain international exposure as I had the opportunity of presenting academic papers and attending various seminars and workshops in India and abroad. My academic interest also prodded me to write extensively for various journals, articles, books and websites both in India and abroad. Amongst the seminars attended special mention may be made of the Harvard Project for Asia and International Relations 001, the Third AFLF conference, 001 at Manila last year and my participation as a moderator of the first session and presentation of the Background paper for the conference titled the Future Leader's E-conference on CSR, organized by the World Bank (18-7 March 00) as also an e-course An Introduction to CSR undertaken under the aegis of the World Bank. My interest in Corporate Governance, Corporate Citizenship and CSR were also re-emphasized by the course taught at the Law University.

I was also fortunate to have undertaken two consecutive teaching assignments, first at the National Law University Bhopal and consequently at the Department of international Relations Jadavpur University where I am teaching at present. These assignments have facilitated a process of interaction and sharing as well as gaining of knowledge through various syllabi designed and courses taught ranging from Issue of Governance State-Business-Civil Society Debate in Asia to International Law, South Asian and West Asian Politico-Economic scenario.

My interactions and networking activities at the third AFLF and consequently its continuity through encouragement received from the World Bank and opportunities of participation in various fora has helped me immensely. Despite the dearth of resources and limited opportunities in India stemming from varied factors like gender and caste considerations to name a few, this has also given me the courage to open the APASE Indian Chapter with a fellow doctoral research student as a part of which we plan to organize a roundtable on CSR in both Kolkata and Delhi by the end of this year.

The opportunity to attend the fourth AFLF meet would help me significantly in this regard through extensive interaction and networking activities with key resource persons, speakers and facilitators and delegates the world over. This would serve as important lessons learnt as also provide support from varied organization through contacts developed. This is crucial both in terms of personal academic capacity enhancement as well as contribution to society at large through future writings, seminars and workshops organized on the future of corporate affairs and its contribution to sustainable development by virtue of an analysis of their existing relationship with government, local communities and civil society in not merely India but also in the larger Asian context through comparative analysis with corporate experiences the world over.

Throughout the history of human being, especially in the modern society, people have long been endeavoring to attain the sacred goal of freedom. The slaves tried every means to escape from their owners even at the cost of their lives; wars broke out in those colony countries to broke the bondage from colonial domination for freedom; it is freedom that serve as the leading spirit in the France Reform; and the spirit of liberty has been written as the declaration of human rights into the constitutions. It seem than freedom has been that primary goal people trying to obtain, not the restrictions, however, without restrictions and regulations, freedom is nothing but a right to jeopardize the social order.

People often claim that they will pursue the goal of freedom in any cost without any mention of the concept of restrictions and regulations, as a matter of fact, they are quite used to, or rather say, dependent on various restrictions and regulations. The right of freedom is rather a right that is gifted and regulated by the law than a slogan of every one is gifted the right by the nature, without the right protected by the law, freedom is no more than a dulcet inclination. While the law itself is a kind of restriction the real meaning of freedom, from this aspect, is a freedom with regulations rather than absolute free choice. From the aspect of individual, every one want to express his own character, develop his own ability, and find out his own potency without being disturbed or forbidden by others, so it is necessary to give out a regulation on other peoples behavior in case of jeopardizing your own freedom, on the other hand, the regulation works the same with you in order to protect other peoples freedom. Thus, every one should be confined to some circumspection in which he could do whatever he likes. These are the basic requirement for a society of congregated people to protect and to prevent.

So the absolute freedom of choice may lead to the two results, one is the chaos of the society due to the abuse of the right of freedom, and the other is the insecurity of ones own basic right such as life, the right of pursuing happiness, mostly because of the jeopardizing from others absolute freedom. People as well as the society needs some regulation and restriction to keep every individual in a safe and order rhythm and thus lead to the wholly stabilization of the society.

But it is not an easy thing even to confine people to a space in which his liberty is protected and his wishes can always be realized. For as we all know, the thousand years of history of mens civilization was a history of a strong power beyond the individual, sometime it took the form of tribes, countries, Parties and nations, sometime it was expressed by tradition, custom, religion and morality; sometime the power was extremely strong in money, economy and mass media, there has always been existing some kind of strong power to depress the space of individual for development. However, without these powers the society can no longer be called society and the value of people is created from nothing. The problem lies in how much should be paid to maintain these, too less lead to the chaos while too much will result in the oppression of individual. For a single person alone, the space confined is as large as possible, but whether the space is the largest while not harm others spaces and the largest harmony of society is maintained is lead to discussion.

Anyhow, no matter how much should be confined to a person, a principal is definitely sure, that is freedom is meaningful on the basis of restriction and regulation, and no matter how inspired people show to the freedom, they can only survive within the laws.

In the story "Bargain" written by A.B. Guthrie Jr., Baumer and Slade are always in conflict with each other. This resulted in Slade's cruelty and prejudice toward Baumer. Although Baumer was the one being picked on he was a man with great intelligence and Slade was cruel and jealous of his accomplishments. Also, Slade had made nothing of his life so he picked on Baumer, but all along Baumer was planning something to hurt Slade. The effect on Slade was his death. Because Baumer was more intelligent than Slade he was able to outsmart him using his clever plan, thereby causing Slade's death.

As Slade gets more cruel toward Baumer, Baumer gets more embarrassed by what Slade does to him. Slade works as a freighter, a person who transports goods. A freighter must be strong but not literate. Slade was a American but an alcoholic and that could be one of the reasons why he was cruel and prejudiced. Slade had a terrible relationship with Baumer. Baumer thought Slade was a thief and once said, "He steal whiskey and call it evaporation. He sneak things from his load." Baumer even knew how Slade did it. " He'd drive a hoop out of place, bore a little hole with a nail or bit and draw off what he wanted. Then he'd plug the whole with a whittled peg and pound the hoop back." Slade's negative behavior resulted in Baumer getting seriously hurt. Baumer one day was walking with envelopes in his hand with a bill in it for Slade. Slade had purchased supplies on credit from Baumer's store. " Slade took the envelope from Mr. Baumer's hand and squeezed it up in his fist and let it drop on the plank sidewalk. Not saying anything, he reached down and took Mr. Baumer's nose between the knuckles of his fingers and twisted it up into his eyes." The second time Baumer gave Slade a bill, he reacted even more violently. " He slid in like a practiced fighter and let Mr. Baumer have it full in the face. Mr. Baumer slammed over on his back, but he wasn't out, he started lifting himself. Slade leaped ahead and brought a boot heel down on the hand he was lifting himself by." As a result of this Baumer was fed up with Slade and ready to teach him a lesson.

Baumer was a clever guy who had many successes in his time in America. Baumer was a immigrant who came from Germany when he was sixteen and learned to read a write English. He became successful when he opened a general store because he was a hard worker. People even said, "…that it would have gone under long ago if Mr. Baumer hadn't been half mule and half beaver. He started the store just two years before and, the way things were, worked himself close to death." Although Baumer was fair and kind he wasn't always treated with respect. He knew that he and Slade really didn't get along so he said, " I think he hate me, that is the thing. He hate me for coming not from this country. I come here, sixteen years old, and learn to read and write, and I make a business, and so I think he hate me." Baumer was determined to create a foolproof plan to get back at Slade. Baumer hired Slade as his freighter to haul goods many miles by bribing him. He sent one of his workers to the saloon. "Slade was at the saloon, o' course, and says to hell with Dutchie, but I told him this was a honest-to-God business, like Baumer had told me to, and there was a quart of whiskey right there in the store for him if, he'd come and get it." Slade never made it back from this Freight Run Alive. Baumer had ordered " Word Alcohol--Deadly Poison" instead of his usual whiskey order. Slade drank it and died because the kegs looked the same, and he couldn't read the warning label because he was illiterate.

Baumer finally solved his problem with Slade, and Slade was the one to blame because he was jealous of Baumer's success. Slade and Baumer were constantly fighting with each other because of pure prejudice. The way Baumer handled himself in this situation showed how intelligent he was in plotting his revenge and causing Slade's death. As for Slade, he made the wrong decision which resulted in a negative ending. The end of this story turns out just right for both of them because they both got what they deserved. As for Baumer always said, "Is good to know to read."

Angelas Ashes

English The quote "all happy families are alike each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way" is a true statement for most families. Most happy families have lots of love and are often wealthy and generally don't have very big problems. The makings for an unhappy family can stem from numerous different problems and situations. In the novel Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt there are many reasons why his family is unhappy. The biggest reason why the McCourt family is unhappy is because they are extremely poor. They rarely have any food, clothes or even blankets to keep them warm at night. This alone can cause lots of anxiety and stress in a household. Another big problem of the family is that the father is an alcoholic who rarely can keep a job. Even when his father does keep a job he often spends his weeks wages on booze. This causes lots of tension in the family because it is hard to love a father who is never there for his kids or his wife. I think the McCourt family did love each other in some ways, but the mother had lots of other problems to worry about, and sometimes was guilty of neglecting her children. If kids grow up not being loved it is impossible for them to feel happy in there home. The fact that the McCourt's were so poor also made the children outcasts in school. Often Frank and his brother would go to school with shoes that had no heels and wearing clothes that they wore every day and were often not clean. This caused the kids at school to tease Frank and his brother and that can be very hurtful. Instead of coming home to a house that would support the boys and what they were going through, they had to go home and deal with there problems alone and at a very young age. Another big reason why the McCourt family was unhappy was because they had a lot of death occurrences in their family. Having a new baby being born and than dying a few months later is extremely tragic and heartbreaking. This can cause a family to have lots of depression. Also, it happened to their family more than one time. As a child grows in your household he becomes loved, and the McCourts lost another child who was two years old. This was devastating to both parents and siblings. The large amount of death and illness was greatly related to the fact that they were poor and lived in very unsanitary living conditions. The McCourt children, specifically Frank, were also always living in constant fear. Because of their Catholic Church upbringing many of the normal feelings that adolescents get during puberty were considered to them very sinful and worthy of going to hell. Frank and his brothers were always afraid that they did something so wrong that they were going to go to hell, and not being able to share your feelings with a parent or other authority figure causes a great amount of fear and unhappiness. Other reasons why the McCourts were unhappy were because they had to move several times because they couldn't always afford to keep their rent. The family often had to take loans and even beg and steal on the streets for food. That is very degrading and can cause a family to have a very negative self-image of themselves. Towards the end of Franks childhood is father decided to move to England in hopes of making more money. This just caused more problems because now the McCourts had no father and the money still wasn't coming in. In conclusion I think that the McCourt family did have love for each other, but they weren't always there for one another. A happy family most has love and understanding. The fact that the family was very poor and was looked down upon by much of their society was there biggest problem. Clearly the quote in this instance is true, the McCourts had several reasons for being unhappy.

One of the most confusing problems in Shakespeare's Hamlet is what takes him so long to act on the Ghost's request for revenge? If Hamlet did act sooner then this story would have been a short story. There are many valid reasons for Hamlet's slow behavior. Among them are Hamlet's self doubt, his concerns about the Ghost, his own psychological character, and the politics of Denmark.

Hamlet's delayed action is reinforced by his own words of self doubt. The Prince criticizes himself as a coward in three of the central soliloquies. In Act II, scene ii, he declares, "O, what a rogue and a peasant slave am I!" (II.ii.550), and then asks the question, "Am I a coward?" (II.ii.571). Then, he reprimands himself for not acting in the famous "To be or not to be" speech of Act II, scene i. Later, when Hamlet comes across Fortinbras and contrasts the bravery of his men at arms with his own indecisiveness, exclaiming, "How all my occasions do inform against me,/ And spur my dull revenge!" (IV.iv.-).

Another cause of Hamlet's delay are his uncertainties about the Ghost and the story he tells in the last scene of Act I. After hearing that his father's death was at the hands of Claudius, it is obvious that the Prince did not suspect the true depth of his uncle's evil. Hamlet needed a plan to have "grounds/ More relative than this" (II.ii.555). Hamlet was unsure if this is "a spirit of health or goblin damned" (I.iv.40). He uses the players to act out the play "Murder of Gonzago". It is only after watching the king's guilt during the play that Hamlet has any confirmation that what the Ghost has told him is true. With this little evidence, Hamlet's hesitation to kill his uncle because a ghost has told him to do so is understandable.

There are some psychological bases that are sources of Hamlet's procrastination. First, even before he learns of his uncle's evilness, Hamlet is in a depressed state of mind, saying "How weary, stale, flat, and unprofitable/ Seems to me all the uses of this world!" (I.ii.1-14). Right from the beginning of the play, Hamlet is in a state of crisis that has weakened his desire and capability to take meaningful action. Second, there is a permanent flaw in Hamlet's character that holds him back from killing Claudius. Hamlet is more of a "thinker" than a "doer". He thinks about what the Ghost says and thinks about killing Claudius as he is praying. Hamlet should just listen to the ghost and just do it. Lastly, Hamlet can only act after he gains a sense of his own identity, announcing himself to be "Hamlet the Dane" in the graveyard scene (V.i.51).

Political forces outside the royal family do play a big role in Hamlet's delay. For example, Claudius tells his Lords that Hamlet must be exiled because his popularity with the people poses a danger to his reign. Then, he tells Laertes that they cannot punish Hamlet for killing Polonius because of the threat of a rebellion by the Prince's supporters. The same goes for Hamlet. Killing Claudius would be a political act of treason. These political views are absent from Hamlet's speeches, but they do come forth at the very end as the dying Hamlet directs Horatio to tell his story and appoints Fortinbras as the new king of Denmark. Hamlet may be unwilling to act because doing so is an offense not only to heaven but to the state and peace of Denmark.

"Something is rotten in the state of Denmark" (I.iv.0). The disorder of the whole situation has been noticed even down to the guards, one like Marcellus. It is no wonder that Hamlet takes so long to take action. He had to overcome his own self doubt, he had to test the story of the Ghost, he had to grow into "Hamlet the Dane", and consider the political aspect of killing his uncle. Hamlet's failure to act sooner is legitimate and understandable. Without the hesitation, there would be no Hamlet The Classic.

Africa suffers from many problems economically, socially and even as serious as the central government. Each country in Africa suffers from individual troubles as well that add to the total problems of the entire contenent. It becomes difficult to solve individual problems because priorities for each problem are different depending on which country. The country of Zambia was established in 164 after it declared it's independence from the United Kingdom and became a one-party rule. As a country today with almost ten million occupants, new problems present themselves everyday to add to the overall conflict.

One problem that faces the people of Zambia and it's government is that it is has a high death and infant mortality rate throughout the country. Because of illnesses such as AIDS and sickle cell anemia the people of Zambia suffer great consequences due to their lack of hospitals. AIDS contributes to almost 100,000 deaths a year and if left untreated almost one quarter of the population will be infected of dead from the virus by the year 015. Currently there is no service designated to helping AIDS victims or even mothers pregnant and also carrying the virus. Hospitals are ill prepared to deal with AIDS victims and even local centers provide false information about the virus. For those who can afford it, untrained doctors offer little help to the sick or dying . Without an insurance system of some kind, people check into hospitals paying out of their own pocket and usually leave untreated and penniless. The people of Zambia often have to travel hundreds of miles to reach a hospital and in most cases by the time the people arrive it is to late.

Another problem that curses the people of Zambia is the economy of the country. Zambia has almost 0% of the country below the poverty line and half of the population is unemployed. The problem was getting much better before 16 when a small civil war in Zambia destroyed more than two years of crops and farmlands turning once highly fertile land into leftover battlegrounds where almost nothing would grow. Before the civil war, almost 0% of the people where farmers able to grow enough food for their own consumption and also able to sell to the government for distribution throughout Zambia. After war swept the country farms and villages were destroyed leaving many jobless and needing to travel to the city to find work. Needless to say, before the people of Zambia will receive any assistance, the government has to pay off the debts that they have owed for almost 0 years. The country of Zambia has a present debt to external sources of almost 6. billion dollars and they have also received two billion dollars in economic aid. Zambia's economy is so weak that one United States Dollar equals about 4,000 Zambian Kwacha‘s.

Lastly, Zambia has a problem with fresh drinking water in almost all of its nine provinces witch can also contribute to the overall health problems. Having water available to the public is not a large problem now that the country has made the move to insert large water stations and public drinking fountains in the late 0's. People can freely use the water stations to bring water back to their homes of simply to get a drink whenever they want. The problem is cleanliness though, and with only two major processing plants in the entire country, outbreaks of contaminated water is farley common. Diseases that can be found in the drinking water range from stomach parasites all the way to malaria. Without proper cleaning the water of Zambia will be unsafe to drink for many generations and the countries move for free public water will be useless.

Zambia suffers from many internal and external problems that only contribute to a small amount to the entire contenent of Africa. Many problems are even being overlooked to aid in the correction of bigger and more widespread problems. The people of Zambia and Africa as a whole have suffered enough and it is time for a change. It will be many years until they can even begin to scratch the surface and resolve even the smallest issues. With hard work and help from outside sources it can be done though.

This table shows that the service sector is immensely important in virtually all national economies. Contrary to much popular opinion, a large service sector is not confined to the more developed economies although it is certainly true that the relative importance of services does vary more or less directly with a country's income level. What does differ is the kind of service activity involved.

Much of the service sector in both developing and industrialised countries is either low skill, low technology private service activity (including wholesale and retail activity) or activities within the public sector (e.g. health, education, welfare services, etc) .The service sector is exceptionally diverse. The most important services are what might be termed circulation activities, notably the whole range of business services (commercial and financial) which are of production and trade.

The above table shows the world export of commercial services between 180 and the year 000. From the graph we can see that commercial trade has increased in the developed countries like the Western European and European Union counties due to the popularity of telecommunications, financial services, insurance and travel only to mention a few because we are in the computer age.

The above table shows the world imports of commercial services between the 180's the year 000. From the graph we can see that commercial trade has increased in the developed countries like Western European and the European countries due to the popularity of telecommunications, financial services and travel.

The World League Table of commercial services trade

(source based on WTO in (16 annual report,16volume 11,)

With this graph we see that the top 15 exporters of services account for 7 percent of the world total (a lower level of concentration than for manufacturing exports) and for 6 percent of imports. The United States is the leader in both cases. However, both the United Kingdom and France are more important as exporters of commercial services than of manufactured goods, while Japan and Germany are less important as exporters of commercial services than they are as manufacturing exporters.

Equally significant is the substantial increase in ranking of the leading East and Southeast Asian as exporters of commercial services, a clear indication that these economies are now substantially more than mere assemblers of manufactured goods. Indeed, although at a broad regional scale ,Western Europe is dominant in total commercial services accounting for 47 percent of the world total in 14 ,followed by Asia (0 percent) and North America (18 percent), in terms of rates growth the most dynamic region was Asia.

Asia's exports and imports of commercial services continued to grow at a significantly faster rate than those of North America or Western Europe. Although Asia's share in world commercial services exports and imports is lower in world merchandise trade, the value of its services exports have exceeded those of North America since 1 and its services imports are about 80 percent larger than those of North America.

Japan accounts for about onethird of Asia's services imports and for a quarter of Asia's services exports. In both 14 and 15, Asia the region with the most dynamic traders in commercial services. At least four traders Hong Kong, The Republic of Korea, Singapore and Thailand recorded and expansion of their commercial services trade in excess of 0 percent.

Statement of intention Youth clubbing society is often misinterpreted by many people and the media. While based on some of my experiences, this imaginary piece will creatively describe the happenings within a nightclub. This piece is aim at those who does not visit night club and who are interested in it.

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity of waiting, the security guard or colloquially termed "the bouncer" looked at me suspiciously, like a fierce lion about to capture its prey. After a second of delay, and with satisfaction he lifted the rope barrier to allow me to gain entry to the nightclub.

As soon as the door closed behind me, I was immediately enveloped by shadows of darkness, the pavement underneath my feet reverberated from the booming music which was projected from beneath me. In the midst of excitement, I strutted to the beat of the music down the stairs which leads to the dance floor. With every step of my gradual descent, the deafening music intensified, I felt the bass echoing from the night club speakers shook my ear drums with thunderous force.

The instant I stepped on the hard, but smoothly polished timber floor, a kaleidoscope of flashing light blinded me. Instinctively, I squinted my eyes to try and adapt to this abrupt change in environment. When, I opened my eyes, I saw the DJ pumping out mixes from a risen platform. With his headphone clutched between his left shoulder and ear, and with his eyes closed in deep concentration, his hands worked the vinyl turn tables like a skilled surgeon.

The intense heat generated by a swamp of bodies on the dance floor was dehydrating and the pungent-wiff of cigarette smoke combined with the smell of sweat invaded my nostrils. Gradually the need for a drink amplified and with no desire to remain on the dance floor I hurried to the bar.

Along the path, bodies thrashed around me and an arm here a leg there. I noticed break dancers performing gravity defying tricks, while some others glided and zigzagged around the dance floor as they were surrounded by a circle of people. Amid all this action, my eyes suddenly lit up as a goddess entered my sight. Her hour glass figure swayed gracefully with the music, and the radiance of her eyes shone like a star's twilight. Her hair like a river of golden silk, it was enough to send a man's imagination to run into overdrive. She wore an attention demanding black low cut revealing top, with a white mini skirt, illuminating her bottom half. Now the thought of a drink had been overshadowed by another desire, and my legs automatically began to pace towards her.

Moving towards her, I made eye contact, and putting my head close to her ear, I began to introduce myself

"Hi, I am…" But before I could finish she interrupted me

"Would you like to dance?" She questioned me with a silky smooth seductive voice.

Shocked by her confidence in me, I was left speechless. I did not think getting to know such a beautiful girl would be so simple. Therefore with happiness and satisfaction, I moved closer against her. In reply she smiled and brushed up against me and began a slow provocative dance. I felt her soft hands around my neck and the smell of her perfume superseded the revolting smell of sweat and smoke. With a tight embrace we looked into each others eyes and a wave of desire creped us both.

All at once, I felt everything around me has stopped and all was quiet, even though the music was still ear-splitting. The sweet scent of her perfume crescendoed as she moved her head close to mine. Our lips were just millimetres apart when suddenly I felt a masculine hand landed on my shoulder, and I was spun around with a great force. The last words I heard before an enormous fist black me out were,

"What the hell are you doing with my girl?!"

CONFLICT FACTORS AND RESOLUTIONS

Conflict can be described as a process in which individuals or groups perceive that others have taken actions that are not compatible with their own interests and they work against each other. This process sometimes escalates to anger, resentment and actions designed to harm the other side. The key elements in conflict are opposing interests between individual or groups, recognition of such opposition, the belief by each side that the other will act to interfere with its interests, and actions that produce the interference. Social psychologists have addressed in their research the facts that cause conflict and what can be done to reduce this common part of social life. Incompatible interests constitute the defining feature of conflicts; however conflict involves more than opposing interests. Social factors may play a role as strong as or even stronger than incompatible interests initiating conflicts.

Once social factor that plays a role in conflict is faulty attributions. Faulty attributions are errors concerning the causes behind others' behavior. Erroneous attributions concerning the causes of negative outcomes can and often do play an important role in conflict, and sometimes cause conflicts to occur when they could have been avoided.

Another social factor is faulty communication. This is the fact that individuals sometimes communicate with others in a way that anger or annoys them even though it is not their intention to do so. An example of faulty communication is receiving harsh criticism, which is criticism you felt was unfair, insensitive. This type of criticism can leave the recipient wanting revenge, which sets the stage for conflict.

A third social cause of conflict involves our tendency to perceive our own views as objective and as reflecting reality. As a result of this tendency we may tend to magnify differences between our views and those of others and also exaggerate conflicts of interest between us.

The final social cause of conflict is personal traits or characteristics. For example, Type A individuals are ones who are highly competitive, always in a hurry, somewhat irritable and tend to become involved in conflicts more than Type B persons who are much calmer and less irritable.

As stated earlier conflict is a part of social life, however it can be reduced in many ways. When involved in conflicts persons involved usually want to resolve them as soon as possible. The most useful strategies are bargaining and superordinate.

In the bargaining strategy or negotiation opposing sides exchange offers, counteroffers, and concessions. If this process is successful, a solution acceptable to both sides is attained and the conflict is resolved. If bargaining is unsuccessful, conflict may intensify.

Superordinate goals are goals that both sides to a conflict seek and that tie their interests together rather than driving them apart. Individuals often divide the world into two opposing sides. They perceive members of their own groups as quite different from and better than people belonging to other groups. These tendencies to magnify differences between one's own group and others to degrade outsiders are very powerful and often play a role in the occurrence and persistence of conflicts.

In conclusion, conflicts are inevitable. Conflict does not stem solely from opposing interests; it often derives from social factors. Conflict can be stirred up in situations in which everyone really shares the same ultimate goals and conflicts do not have to exist simply because one or both sides forget that other people have feelings and expect to be treated decently. The goal should be to handle conflicts constructively.

Wells, therefore you can rest assured that your assignment will be handled by only top rated specialists. H.G. Wells was an author of many books. He is probably most known for War of the Worlds and starting the genre of science-fiction. His writings were of fiction and non-fiction. He wrote of topics such as science, history, politics, and literature. War of the Worlds was one of his most well known novels especially after the U.S. went into panic when it was broadcasted over radio. "The Door in the Wall" was a famous short story of his which seemed to be quite eerie and somewhat confusing. Both of these books have similarities and difference between each other. But one holds more than the other. In my perspective they hold more difference than similarities.

There are a few similarities in "The Door in the Wall" and War of the Worlds that can be picked out. The most obvious is of course that they were both written by the same author, H.G. Wells. Both of these books are of the science-fiction genre. On a smaller scale they also hold something that deals with politics. In War of the Worlds, it deals with the societies going into a panic in the different countries. The media is also exposing to the public what is happening everywhere and guiding them on what to do over the radio. While "The Door in the Wall" deals with a single politicians feelings. So they both have somewhat of a political reference. What is noticed the most is that the main characters in each of the stories are running from their problems. Wallace kept trying to avoid the green door while Pierson had to keep hiding from the Martians. These being the only noticeable similarities, I feel there are much more differences between the two.

"The Door in the Wall" and War of the Worlds have many difference. War of the Worlds had a scary and panicky feeling to it while the other was more mysterious and eerie. War of the Worlds had broader problems such as society running from the Martians and not finding a way to defeat them, it was a story of Man vs. Man. "The Door in the Wall" had the conflict of the characters mind, in which it was Man vs. Self. Their themes also differed from each other. War of the Worlds seem to point out that one should expect the unexpected. This theme or moral of the story came in when the people found out that the only thing that was needed to kill the Martians was for germs to get into them. The theme or moral of "The Door in the Wall" is that things aren't always the way they appear. This was because the door in the wall always seemed to be a utopia for Wallace because of his earlier experience, but when he finally went into it for the last time, it ended up causing him to die. The setting was also different. One stories setting was in England, and the others setting was in New Jersey. Both stories endings gave different emotions to the readers, one had a confusing, if not sad, ending ( "The Door in the Wall" ) while the other seemed have a good and happy ending ( War of the Worlds ). The last difference would have to be their popularity. War of the Worlds became far more popular than "The Door in the Wall", which could have been because War of the Worlds was considered the first sci-fi novel, not to mention the broadcasting of it caused a huge panic in the U.S.

From my aspects, their differences were stronger than their similarities. The things that they shared in common the most was the fact that they were both science-fiction stories and that they were written by the same author. The differences were clearly shown through each story's conflicts, themes, settings, and resolutions.

Feasibility of Instituting and Operating a Lottery in Alaska

Prepared by Edward Pavsek

Professor Sheri Ann Smith authorized a study to determine the feasibility of instituting and operating a lottery in the state of Alaska. Currently, Alaska is one of 1 states that do not have any form of government-operated lottery. With increasing budget shortfalls projected over the near future, various programs historically funded by the legislature face diminished budget allocations unless alternative revenues can be generated to supplement traditional funding sources. Lotteries are not a substitute for the taxing power of the state; rather, in the states with lotteries funds generated by the lotteries are used to enhance allocations already in place for a wide variety of social programs. I researched several aspects of the feasibility of having a lottery in Alaska 1) I conducted primary research by distributing and collecting questionnaires surveying the interest among Alaskans in having and participating in a lottery; ) I researched secondary print and electronic media to gain an understanding of the historical use of lotteries in the United States and to determine the amounts of revenues derived by lotteries in other states; and ) I researched the strength and diversity of the Alaska economy. Based on my research, I recommend that the Alaska legislature take steps to implement a lottery. There is substantial support among Alaskans for having a lottery and there is interest in participating in one if it is instituted.

Based on my conclusions, I offer the following recommendations

1. I believe the implementation and operation of a lottery in Alaska is feasible. Therefore, I recommend that the Alaska Legislature introduce enabling legislation for the creation of a state lottery commission as a first step in implementing a lottery in Alaska. My primary research indicates a strong interest in having a lottery in Alaska, and my secondary research indicates that a lottery will impose little, if any, additional budgetary burden upon a state already facing increasing budget deficits. Also, with potential budget restrictions reducing outlays for important social needs, such as education, lottery proceeds could be used to augment funding in discretionary areas of the budget. While the amounts to be generated from a lottery are impossible to predict, Alaska™s population is adequate to support a lottery. Seasonal influxes of visitors add to the real population base and increase the available pool of players.

. I recommend that the lottery commission, if created, solicit bids from the various lottery retailers currently operating lotteries in other states. Concurrent with such bid solicitation, I recommend a thorough canvassing of the lottery commissions in other states for further advice based on their experiences in operating a lottery.

. Alternatively, I recommend that the questions of whether to have a lottery in Alaska and what form the lottery should take are ones that could be added as a ballot referendum during the next general election, thereby removing professional politics from the choice of Alaskans.

4. Finally, I recommend that Alaska join a multi-state lottery such as the PowerBall lottery to augment revenues from an Alaskan lottery. My research indicates that per capita spending on PowerBall in states having their own lotteries averages almost $0; this would result in a projected increase of almost $0 million dollars in lottery profit over that generated by a state lottery alone.

Stuck in the Snow

My arms, head, and legs were all immobilized by the snow's vast pressure and weight. I flashed back to my avalanche preparation course, and remembered not to panic. Then I realized that I really was in the situation everyone talks about and began to panic. It felt like I had been yelling for an hour when I felt a hard plastic shovel hit me in the face. Then I saw the blue sky and took a deep breath. In reality I was under the snow for about two minutes and had been yelling for about a minute and fifty seven seconds. We had been in the back country at Sugar Bowl riding some awesome powder bowls when I went down in the world's smallest avalanche. The snow was awesome and when it is that good I get pumped and take chances that I normally wouldn't.

Before I left the valley I watched an interview with Shaun White, a sixteen year old pro snowboarder, who said, If I hadn't been pushed so hard by my crew I wouldn't have tried the widow maker. At the time I thought, There is no way my friends could talk me into dropping off a cliff let alone the widow maker.

The day after the avalanche experience we went back out into the Sugar Bowl back country. Over night it had dropped a foot and a half fresh powder. We woke up early and rode the chair up to the top of the resort. Now we hiked for two hours to the peak of the mountain. From this high we could see Lake Tahoe and I felt like I was on top of the world. In front of us was a perfect bowl of deep powder and then a wicked run through the trees with some pretty steep cliffs. I had been looking forward to this the whole season. I dropped in to the bowl first and carved out a completely fresh lazy line down to the trees were I stopped and waited for my friends Cole and Curtis. Cole led through the trees because he was an all around better rider than me at the time and we wanted his experience and skill leading the way. All of the sudden he stopped and I noticed a sign on a tree that said, DANGEROUS VERTICAL DROP. The next thing he said will be burnt into my memory forever. Cole said, Dude this is the Widow Maker, no joke!! I was scared out of my mind and the first thing that came to my head was how do I get out of this. I looked at Curtis and said, No way dude! Are you gonna do it? He too was scared and just nodded his head no. Cole on the other hand said, Well than how are we gonna get out? He was right, to get around this cliff it was a long hike and frankly he had more confidence in his cliff dropping skills than I did so he just dropped it and left Curtis and me alone at the top. Both of us were tired so we just sat down and started talking about life, death and other intellectually stimulating conversations pieces. After about an hour I had had enough and told Curtis I would drop it if he did it right after I did, and he agreed to this course of action.

I took a deep breath and pointed my nose straight at the drop. The next thing I knew I was flying through the air at what I thought was slow motion. The hang time was amazing and I have yet to feel that way in my stomach since then. When I landed it was like landing on a pillow topped bed and I just sank into the powder and rode away. Curtis followed me, and we rode in sheer amazement the rest of the way down the hill. At the bottom we found Cole and told him about what we both had just done not noticing anything wrong with him. Then I looked at his shoulder closer and noticed he had problems moving it and his right one looked like it had raised and inch or two. I later learned that he had fallen on the Widow Maker and broken his collar bone. Curtis and I joked about how we were going to give Shaun White a run for his money, and win the Snowboarding Pro Tour ever since then.

Where It All Begins

To me practice is where it all begins. It should be the first thing you want to do if you would like to excel in whatever it is you are doing. Without practice I do not think that anyone would be able to do something to the best of there ability. If you practice hard every day you will become the best player that you can possibly be.

Baseball is a sport that can last from two and a half months to four months depending on what kind of league you are in. However I will mainly be talking about college baseball. During practices I work on all sorts of things such as plays, situations, and most importantly communication and discipline. On a baseball field there can never be enough communication. When I am on the field I work on things that I need to improve on. If I was having a problem on fielding, I would go to the infield and start taking some ground balls so that I improve my hand eye coordination. On the offensive side of the game if I was having a hard time helping out the team with my bat, then I would go and hit in the cage. I could also go hit off a tee which is a big help if you are struggling at the plate.

Everything that I told you up to this point is just the beginning of what I do to get ready before a baseball game physically and mentally. All of this is to get you ready for the baseball game that is coming up the next day or in the next few days.

But there is more than just that.

When I am getting ready for a baseball game the first thing that I do is look on the schedule to see what time the game is starting. I am a person who likes to chill out before doing such a big activity. About two in half hours before I am

suppose to be at the field I like to eat a little pre game meal. I do not like to go and play around and lose energy before a game that I have been practicing hard for all week. I always like to get to the games a little bit earlier than when I am suppose to. Why? Because, to me getting there early lets me get mentally focused on the game and my objectives.

As soon as I step on the field all fun and games are over with. Every thing form here on out and until the umpire says ball game there will be no messing around or having any fun in a joking manner. When I see that the other team is showing up I start to think to myself if they are a discipline team or not. After I figure out if they are discipline or not I start going to each player and seeing how good they are so that I can find out were the strong and week points are in there team, basically just critiquing the team. Then I go to the pitcher and find out if he is left-handed or right-handed. I like to know beforehand so that I can get my mind right on that aspect of the game. In baseball that is a big deal, because for me as a right handed batter facing a left-handed pitcher it will be a lot easier on me to pick up the ball coming out from his hand. As for a right-handed pitcher, he tends to hide the ball longer. That is the advantage of facing a pitcher that throws from the same side you as a batter are hitting from.

After I am done observing the other team, I go and observe my team to see if they are mentally focused and have there heads on straight so that they will be ready to play when the game starts. If you are not familiar with the game of baseball, it is ninety percent mental and ten percent physical. As you can see being mentally prepared for a baseball game is very important. Next, I go to my pitcher and see if he needs to go in the bull-pin and warm up some more before he goes out on the field. When I know that my teammates and I are mentally ready we go out onto the field and perform to the best of our ability striving to win the game.

The death penalty is one of the most debuted subjects in America today. And why not? Its better to get rid of our criminals by killing them, thatll teach them, right? Well I'm here to pose the facts to you so that you can decide what is the better method

Well lets take a look at the facts here. One of the most used arguments for the death penalty is that it is cheaper then keeping someone in prison for 40 years. you would think that cause it usually takes about 15 years for a person to be executed on death row. It dose look cheaper then keeping in someone and feeding them, housing them, providing for them and in some cases educating for the rest of their lives. That's what many people think is the truth but in reality it isnt.

When a jury sentences a man or woman to death then there is a long appeals process that goes on. It is set into the constitution a minimum constitutional safeguard, which protects an inmates right to have appeals and not just be executed. And because of that there is a delay between conviction and execution. This time in between is where the appeals take place and a lot of money is spent.

In an example in New York a man called Robert Schulman was on trial for capital murder. He was convicted in 1 and the trial cost New York taxpayers, $.16 million. His trial was .5 times greater then a typical murder trial when the death penalty was not sought after. That is double the amount that it would cost for him to be in prison for 40 years at $0,484 a year. And in 1, the New York Dally estimated that costs involved in capital murder cases could reach a total of $0 million before the first person ever gets executed.

Another argument given for the death penalty is that it gives closure for the grieving families. So how the death of the man/woman that committed this against their family member will make it better. In some case this is true and the family is satisfied with their death. But more likely then often there is no closure to what they feel. So the death of that person could have made no difference and all that will still be there.

Another thing is the small chance that this person may be innocent. Sometimes our system fails and makes innocent men/woman be sent to death for crimes they did not commit. Only recently has there been a breakthrough in DNA and now it can be used in cases to prove guilt or innocence. Past cases where there was no DNA evidence used have been exonerated because it turned out that the blood found at the crime scene was not the convicted ones blood. Another way that a person could be sent to jail would be that the he/she did not have equal representation at there trial and lost because of that This means that there might be people on death row that are innocent but can't prove it with DNA or they just didn't get a fair trial.

The system is not always right as I said above and here's another reason why. If you were to send someone to death then they would go through the appeals. When going through the process there is a chance that he/she could get out on some technicality. They would have a greater chance of getting out of jail through the appeals process then when a person has a life sentence.

One more reason would be that the death penalty scares people into not committing violent crimes on the assumption that they would get death if they did it. Now there could be some people that this actually be true for but it is not always. Mot of the time a violent crime like murder is committed in the heat of a moment. Maybe the spouse found his/her spouse in bed with a lover and got caught up n the moment. Not every murder can be prevented by just the fear of death.
