Article Analysis Week One

On Thursday, April 4, 00, President Bush visited Canton, Ohio in an attempt to sell his tax cut proposal. President Bush planned this trip in the hometown of a fellow Republican who refuses to go along with the proposed plan. Economists have also debated whether a new round of tax breaks will provide the troubled economy with the stimulus it needs. Edwin Chen and Janet Hook, Los Angeles Times staff writers, summarized the Presidents visit in an article titled, Bush launches tax cut offensive.

Some of the opposition to Bushs plan comes within his own party. GOP Sen. George Voinovich joined other Senate moderates in refusing to vote for any tax cut greater than $50 million. Bush argued that Congress needs to quickly approve a tax cut of not less than $550 billion, which he said would create 1 million new jobs by the end of 004 (Chen & Hook, 00, p. 1). There are those who are worried about the burgeoning federal budget deficit such as Voinovich (Chen & Hook, p.1). Voinovich sees the tax cut causing spending cuts. If Voinovich is correct, than businesses that rely on government buying their products, would be affected and consumers would pay more for their products.

In Bushs speech, he blamed the weak economy on an array of factors, including a global recession, corporate scandals that shook investor confidence and the 001 terrorist attacks (Chen & Hook, 00, p. ). He tries to pass blame on the current economic conditions by stating that the recession had begun under President Clintons watch (Chen & Hook, p. ). Citing low interest rates, low rate of inflation and declining oil and gas prices President Bush remains optimistic (Chen & Hook, p. ).

President Bushs proposed tax cut has gained supporters and opponents from within and outside his party. In support of the proposed tax cut, I believe that it could give the economy a boost. Families would pay federal income tax, investors would no longer be taxed on stock dividends, and married couples would pay less tax for filing jointly. As a family man with two children, there would be a bigger deduction for each child resulting in larger take home pay. The proposed tax cut would accomplish its purpose of getting more money into the working families hands with the idea of them spending that money. This would cause businesses and their suppliers to begin hiring; therefore, causing the unemployment rate to be reduced.

As for opposing the tax cut, the government would be forced into borrowing money to pay for the bigger projected deficits. This would likely result in increased interest rates for everyone. Families and businesses would be paying more for mortgages, credit cards, and borrowing costs for investments. It seems that whatever attempt President Bush makes to fix the economy there will always be those who are in support of his actions and those who are not yet convinced.

Philip the Arab

Ancient Roman emperors are seen by the public in an admirable light. A prime example of this would be Marcus Julius Philippus, who was better known as Philip the Arab. What the public does not see is that even the most admirable, have their own dark secrets.

Philip was born in 04 AD during the reign of Septimius Severus, in the Roman province of Arabia. He was born to Julius Marinus a few years after his brother, Julius Priscus. (Meckler) In the 0s AD, Philip married Otacilia Dusanic, and they had a child whom they named Marcus Julius Severus Philippus. (Pohlsander, V. 1 14-) Philip declared him co-ruler, Augustus, before the young Philip had even reached the age of ten. (Meckler)

Philip the Arab's career became prominent after he was appointed Praetorian Prefect to Gordian 111. (Marcellinu 45) Sources then indicate that an assassination of Gordian 111 occurred, leaving the rule to Philip. Philip was believed to have been the reason the assassination was carried out. (Marcellinu 45) He had used his influence to excite the soldiers and by prodding them, he had carried out his corrupt plan. (Smith 56)

As soon as Philip came into power, he began making changes. He made peace with the Persian King, Shapur, and travelled to Rome. (Meckler) He founded the city of Philippopolis and in April 48, he led the polis in the Secular Games, to celebrate the one thousandth birthday of Rome. (Pohlsander V. 46-47)

Soon after all these activities had taken place, the Goths invaded Moesia. Decius was appointed to the Danubian Command. (Meckler) Decius was skilled in the military arts and soon became greatly loved by his army. The army soon acclaimed him emperor. Philip went forth to confront his rival and was slain in battle. (Smith 56) Decius was suspected to have murdered Philip or else wise, he had persuaded Philip's army to mutiny. Philip's young son was also murdered shortly afterwards. (Hornblower and Spawforth 786)

Philip the Arab lived during the time of 04-4 AD, and he was emperor between 44 and 4 AD. (Meckler) Philip was a gifted provincial administrator who found out the hard way that military skills are a necessity to survive in the ancient world.

(Hornblower and Spawforth 786)

Dating as far back as the th century, the path a character takes in a story to become a hero has not varied greatly. The details surrounding the character, such as his lifestyle, time period and others, deviate greatly however the underlying theme of the journey remains constant. There is always a path that is involved in making this journey, whether it may take them years or days, they complete it in some way. One extreme yet similar example of this is King Arthur and Luke Skywalker. The time period in which each lived differs vastly, but their guide in life, the mentor, similar humble beginnings, and their unique way of acquiring an heirloom all prove to be quite similar.

Aiding Arthur was a trustworthy and wise person who had been of help even for his father. His presence was greatly appreciated and respected and for that he was the advisor through the reigns of Pendragon, Uther and Arthur. "Merlin became chief advisor, and often assisted the king by his magical arts." In Skywalker's life, he too had a mentor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, who worked with his father, Anikin Skywalker. Obi-Wan taught and trained Skywalker as did Merlin to Arthur. The guidance each of these mentors provides will help both in obtaining the goal the want to achieve. Both mentors also end up leaving their pupil to fight their destiny alone. As both Arthur and Skywalker were alone in the end, they were also alone in the beginning of their lives.

They began their lives unaware of the destiny they were about to fulfill. Arthur grew up alone after his father died when he was 15 and was the squire to Sir Kay. "Arthur, who was at that time serving in the capacity of a squire to his foster-brother, Sir Kay…" Skywalker grew up without a father entirely and was raised by his aunt and uncle as a farmer. Both were unaware that people so ordinary as they were could rule a kingdom or save the galaxy. Yet through their journeys, they both begin to realize that they are not as ordinary as the once thought. There's something different about them that only they can find out. Each finds out their hidden significance in this world by obtaining something that could only prove to them their true destiny.

Their hidden significance is present in a weapon they both acquire. A weapon that was once possessed by their fathers. Arthur pulls a sword out of a stone that is only reserved for him. "..but having observed near the church a sword sticking in a stone, he galloped to the place, drew out the sword with great ease…" This sword was known as Excalibur and was placed in there by Uther himself only to be retrieved by Arthur. Skywalker also acquires a family weapon that was once his father's. It was a light saber, a saber from one of the greatest jedi-knights. Once attaining the family heirloom, then can successfully fulfill their destinies.

A heroic journey such as King Arthur's and Luke Skywalker's are not the only types out there. Many more characters are created with the same path as Arthur and Skywalker, such as Rocky. He did not obtain a weapon from his father, but he did start out as an ordinary person who became this extraordinary person. This journey has been around for many years and will continue to be used in the future.

Margaret Atwood is inarguably the most prominent Canadian novelist. Her works have been received well not only in Canada, but in Europe, America and India too. Starting first as a poet I 160s she has to her credit half a dozen novels and also the first authentic book of criticism on Canadian literature.

Not much criticism has appeared on Atwood, and whatever criticism there is, suggests that she has either been branded as a pure and simple feminist writer or a robust nationalist writer. Though not denying the fact that her feminist concerns are visible in almost all her works, it will be underestimitating her if one read her works purely from a feminist angle. Similarly despite her effort to find in authentic Canadian voice in her writings, her worksany great work for that matter- is more than only nationalist.

The present researcher feels that Atwood's work is marked by a series of binary oppositions like self-other, male-female, nature-culture, art-life. The dualism appear again and again not only in her collections of poetry one interestingly titled Double Perephone but also in her novels forming a kind of continuum. Thus Atwood's The Edible Woman very subtly makes an analysis of binary opposition of Masculine/Feminine. Her Lady Oracle explores the art-life dichotomy. And in her most famous work Surfacing she is faced with some seemingly irreconcilable dualities of life like death-rebirth, past-present and nature-society. In fact Atwood seems so fond of these oppositions that she sometimes makes use of homologies while talking about some issues. Thus she sees a kind of similarity between the status of Canada and of Woman. More such homologies can be encountered in her writings.

The present researcher proposes to study binary oppositions in Atwood's writings with the assumption that they often get replicated at different level in a system. Hence Atwood's critical treatment of some of the most famous binary oppositions like man-woman, nature-culture will suggest that some of world's most tenaciously held beliefs are just constructs, created to suit a particular sex, class or race.

The researcher plans to make use of some contemporary theories in this study, especially the insights developed by structuralist critics.

Following is tentative chapter division of the proposed Ph.D. thesis titled "Forms of Binarism in the Novels of Margaret Atwood".

Chapter-I Introduction Literary and cultural background

Chapter-II Binary Opposites A continuum between Atwood's poetry and her fiction.

Chapter-III Duality of Self and Other.

Chapter-IV Binary Analysis of male-female relations.

Chapter-V Nature and Culture in Atwood's novels.

Chapter-VI Art and Life in the Novels of Atwood.

In The Story of an Hour, Kate Chopins use of symbolism helps develop insight into Louise Mallards mindset.

Upon word of Brently Mallards death, Louise Mallard finds that the best way to cope with her husbands unexpected death is to have some time alone in her room. Chopin describes two very important features of the room. There is a comfortable, roomy armchair and a large open window.

The narrators use of several adjectives to describe the chair, such as comfortable and the fact that she sunk into it helps render the reader with a feeling of warmth and love, and as though her problems seems to have disappeared.

Through the large open window Louise is able to observe nature which proves to be very symbolic. She describes the sky as having patches of blue sky showing here and there through the clouds that had met and piled one above the other. The piled clouds symbolize her husbands oppression and the patches of blue sky symbolize her breaking away from her husbands control. The trees which she describes as aquiver with the spring life symbolizing her newfound excitement for life. There is a faint singing coming from outside and chirping of sparrows. All these elements bring together the sense of joy that poor Louise is feeling. Her eyes where gazed on the patches of blue sky which seem to suggest that she is looking to the future and forgetting her repressive past.

The first impression that the reader gets of Louise Mallard is not a pleasant one. She is described as having heart trouble. After news of her husbands death, Louise is portrayed as being young, with a fair, calm face. Her sense of hope has permeated her whole body and revitalized her mind and spirit which has made her to look more youthful.

Even though all these good thoughts are building up in her head, she is still too timid to express how she really feels. She wants to explode with joy but is succumbed by the cheer timing of her husbands sudden death. She is holding it back as powerful as her two white slender arms would have. By the author using word slender the reader gets the impression that she is not trying hard at all to hold it back. Louise is heard repeating the word free over and over again, and for once in her life she would be living for herself.

The window helped Louise perceive the wonderful world that she was about to enter. The author is quoting say that Louise was drinking a very elixir of the life through that open window.

The story ends with someone trying to open the front door of Louises home. To her surprise it was her supposedly dead husband Brently. This shock cause Louise to die, which was foreshadowed in the very beginning from the author describing that Louise was afflicted with heart trouble in the very first sentence.

Metallica

VS

Napster

Reporter Robert Thomas jumps head first into this story to find out once and for all, has Metallica sold-out their fans?

It isn't easy being the world's biggest heavy metal band. After albums, one of which was a compilation of covers songs and another which was the live recording of S&M (Symphony and Metallica), they have easily destroyed all of their competition and still hold the title of being the world's, biggest, heaviest, fastest and most metal band in the world. You'd think they'd be pretty happy at the moment with that title, wouldn't you, especially after almost 0 years of playing, well they're not. It seem that drummer Lars Ulrich and the rest of the gang are getting pretty annoyed at the moment with the way that the famous internet file-sharing MP program Napster has been running their business, and have decided to sue the hell out of them, and shut them down for good. The question though is, is it really worth it? This sudden act from Metallica has unwillingly decreased there fans base by a lot, causing fans to lash out at Metallica, calling them sell outs and what have you. Though that isn't really the problem here. The fact that has been eating every body up inside, and ping a lot of people off, is that way back in the early 80's, when metallica were playing gigs in pubs and going on small tours which they could barely afford. They relied on the underground tape-trading of there songs to get them through the rough days, that's how they developed their initial fan base. And now here they are, 0 years later, the same underground type tape trading process that was happening back then, has started up again, only on the net, and Metallica is, as most people are thinking, selfishly taking over and shutting it down. Although there is a very good reason for many people to have there reasons for hating metallica, there is also the other side of supporting fans and journalists etc. Who are all for and behind Metallica in their process to shut down illegal MP trading. This is one of argumentative topics where both sides have equally the right amount of say, on one hand you have angry fans, who would just like to download there favourite Metallica song off the internet and trade with others alike, as Metallica did in there early days. Then there's the other hand, in which one of the big laws come into play. They are the Copyright laws of Music. By allowing fans to download music when they want, and how often they want, not to mention that there is no limit on the amount of MP's one may download off the net, there is a great decrease in record sales and musicians aren't getting the money they deserve or earn for putting out these records.

At the moment, the case is still going through the biggest phase of its lawsuit, and for the time being, Napster and Metallica have agreed to a program that allows Napster to ban all the users from its program if the attempt to download Metallicas music.

Essay

Why Do I Want to be a Teacher?

I have always wanted to be a teacher. Both of my parents were teachers and in my mother's case at 80 years old, she is still teaching by running a pre- kindergarten school. My parents loved their careers and passed their passion on to me.

Life is always about choices and when I finished my undergraduate work in 177, I was at the proverbial fork in the road. Do I keep going in school or get to work? I chose to go to work and began a long and successful career in business. Throughout the years I continuously thought about teaching and wondered if I had made a mistake. This feeling grew steadily in the past two decades as I raised my kids and interacted with the education system. I was envious of the teachers that "were on fire" and those teachers of whom my kids would say, " I love Mr. or Ms…". When asked the question of what I would do if I won the lottery, my stock answer was always to say," I would quit my job and become a teacher."

Over the past several years I have been able to coach kids on various athletic teams. The past two years I have coached freshman football at Wauconda High School. Several of the kids on my teams have been afflicted with ADD, ADHD, and Bi-Polar and other special needs. What a great feeling it is to have parents tell me that I am making an impact on these kids. With all of the successes I have had in my business career, nothing could touch the education that these kids have given me.

It has always made me sad when I read the annual articles on how our students across the country do not know our country's history or the name of the President. The pace of change in our world is dramatic and accelerating. The impact of technology, the evolution to a world economy, the political and cultural shifts throughout the world on every continent are breathtaking and it is critical that our students grasp the past and current states of our world. I know that I cannot change the degradation of our country's test scores or stop the decline in awareness of world events by our young people. However, I do believe that I can touch and teach my students and improve their understanding of our history, our current state and provide avenues to get them to think about the future. I do not apologize for being idealistic because I am part idealist. My pragmatic side knows however that the only way that I can make a difference even in a small way is to become a great teacher.

Last month on a very hot day in August I was standing in the hallways at Wauconda High School and the students were bustling by, teachers were gearing up for the next class, the administration staff was visibly present in the hallways maintaining order, the bells were ringing and it was in a word, hectic. I walked out of the school called my wife and told her that I was going to be a teacher. I worried about her response as our income would decline significantly and she simply said, "I wondered when you would finally do what you have always wanted to do…"

"I am with you all the way…."

I did not win the lottery but I am going to live my dream. I want to be a teacher.

Radio and TV sets are to be found in virtually all the homes of the developed countries. In domocracies a large measure of political freedom is allowed, so that programmes are usually independent, balanced, and not necessarily pro-government. In terms of general education, therefore, radio and television rank alongside books as valuable tools. A general education must incorporate a good knownledge of the world we live in. In serious broadcasting, programmes are planned to cover a wide range of topics from wild life to medical matters to space exploration, plus a host of others.

Many countries provide programmes specifically aimed at schools, for examination purposes, and at senior students who wish to obtain external qualifications. For example, Britain has an Open University which offer a wide range of subjects up to degree level for home study, with text books supplied on demand.

Schools broadcasts have long been established. These are designed to supplement the work of the class teacher and nowadays most modern schools provide all classes with radio and TV. The importance of these broadcasts lies in the use to which they are put. The over-use of TV and radio may well lead to mental laziness on the part of both teacher and student. A radio or TV broadcast should never be a soft option. Notes should be taken and work set on the subject-matter. Properly used, broadcasting is a useful visual and aural aid, but it is no substitute for traditional methods. Attractive programmes on the agricultural, industry, social traditions, wild life and general topography of a foreign country undoubtedly stimulate class in history and geography. These subjects can admittedly be made boring and laborious, but they do demand factual, sometimes statistical knowledge for examination purposes. Perhaps the students who gain most from broadcasting are those of average, or average-minus intelligence.

The acid test is the question, has broadcasting really raised class standards? In some countries the answer is yes. Yet in other countries, such as Britain, the period of its use has coincided with a general decline in standards of marking, so that actual result may not appear to have dropped too alarmingly. This cannot be blamed on broadcasting, but broadcasting in Britain happens to be part of a system use in the public sector which is anathema to the older generatoin. In the old days, pupils had no visual aids apart from the blackboard and chalk. Facts and figures were learnt by heart. This was often tedious, but at least that generation was literate and numerate, which is more than can be said for many British school-leavers to day.

Characterization of Marcus

Marcus is twelve years old and lives with his mother Fiona in London. He goes through a remarkable development in the course of the novel.

Marcus characterizes himself as someone who is quiet and who likes reading and computer games (p.7, ll.10-11). Additionally, he seems to be the oldest twelve-year-old in the world (p.68, l.4). He often thinks about his mum, school, relationships and people in another way other kids his age might do. It is noticeable that he seems as considerate as an adult. For instance, he distinguishes between real trouble and troubles invented by people (p.75, ll.11-1). Often it also seems that Marcus takes care of his mother and not the other way around (p.74, l.7). It is him who tells Will and Fiona when to talk, and what to talk about (p.14, ll.6-7).

At the beginning of the novel Marcus feels completely alone. There is nobody who understands or helps him. He always loses arguments against his mother and nobody at school wants him to be his friend. This is the reason why he thinks he has a shit time at school and a shit time at home (p.44, l.). Both his outward appearance, like his out of date haircut and his uncool clothes, and his insufficient knowledge of pop music(p.8, ll.0-) and football players make kids laugh about him at school all the time.

Marcus is just different than other teenagers. At the Chrismas party Will is surprised how thankful and happy Marcus is about the presents, although they are not really great. He has a good heart and maybe, in contrast to other kids, he thinks that the presents are less important than the fact that they are given with love (p.181, ll.5-6).

Another difference is that Marcus and Will emphazise different values in a relationship. While Will always connects relationships with sex, Marcus considers things like spending time together, being alone and talking to each other as much more important (p.1, ll.0-).

So in his way of thinking and behaving Marcus is pretty much like an adult, but he is twelve years old, and Will realizes that Marcus needs help to be a kid, not an adult (p.164, l.7). Marcus contacts with Will and Ellie really lead to an essential change in his personality.

At the end of the novel Marcus becomes as robust and as unremarkable (p.06, l.0) as every other teenager. He becomes more self-confident and distances himself from his mother in a way that she feels as though (she is) losing him(p.05, l.4).

Although the old Marcus (is) disappearing (p. 0, ll.14-15), both Marcus himself and Will know that the new Marcus will be OK, because he has learned how to be a normal teenager (p., ll.1-, p.07 last line).

Why Do I Wish To Pursue a Graduate Degree?

The profession of pharmacy is a multi-faceted environment. Generally speaking, the

career is comprised of a retail and hospital-based type of practice. Individuals choose to

embrace one of these avenues based on personal preference and satisfaction. To expand

upon the role of hospital-based pharmacists, a two-forked approach to professional

development exists. For the individual that does not want to maintain the status quo, you

can seek to move ahead and aspire for leadership roles within these two arenas. The two

arenas of professional development are that of the clinical nature and the converse of

management. A clinical pharmacist can pursue an advance degree that would focus upon

direct patient contact and support the health and welfare of a particular patient. That

individual would have direct involvement in the medical care of that patient. On the

other career development pathway of a hospital-based pharmacist is that of one seeking

to advance through the management of the department. This person is responsible for the

health and welfare of the system put in place to provide the care of all patients through

the guidance and management of supporting staff.

In the chosen profession of pharmacy that I have embarked upon starting twelve years

ago, I am at a crossroad in my career. As with most professions, one can choose to

maintain this sense of status quo or choose to expand and develop professionally. It is my

belief, based upon past life experiences that my greatest benefit to this chosen profession

are through the development of my managerial skills. In doing so, I have chosen to

pursue a graduate degree in the field of business. It is my opinion that through the

instruction and discipline of a graduate degree, I will foster the positive attributes that I

need to succeed in an ever-changing environment in the field of pharmacy and healthcare.

Not only will the completion of this graduate program give me the insight and direction

to propel a dynamic organization into the future, it will also afford me the liberty to pick

and choose the job I feel would satisfy my needs and desires.

In looking at long-term planning professionally, my interest also lies in the possibility

of growing and expanding into the realm of hospital administration. With this in mind,

the graduate program I have chosen to pursue would also steer me in this direction and

open up the avenues necessary to continue. In all, I believe my primary motivations are

to be able to choose the position I feel I would desire most and to do well in that chosen

position. My aspirations are not to seek greater monetary payment for my services, but in

doing so and completing an advance graduate degree will provide this opportunity as

well.

According to The New Webster Handy College Dictionary, ethics are the principles of honor and morality, the accepted rules of conduct, and the moral principles of an individual. I believe there is no difference between ethics and moral, beliefs, or values. Ethics are also the distinction between right and wrong or an accepted opinion, principle or standard of an individual.

Personally, ethics are the moral values that my mother taught me since I was growing up. Just as my life began with her, so did my ethics in life. My mother was and is instrumental in teaching me and putting into practice personal ethics for life. My young teenage life was not like most of my peers. Mine was extremely challenging. I am the oldest of three and of a single parent family. Due to my mother's illness, I was forced to grow up very quickly. Much like my mother, I was faced with a situation of becoming responsible for the well being of my family. My mother is a person capable of accepting huge amounts of responsibilities, and of great accomplishments for her and the people around her.

My personal ethical values are the basis for the decisions that I have to make when I am confronted on a situation when I have to use my judgment. My personal challenges are met with the same determination my mother has taught me. Accepting huge amounts of responsibilities and accomplishing my goals and also for the people around me. I manifest my ethics to others by saying no when the situation I'm in goes against my ethics, values and/or beliefs.

The work place is a true test for my personal values. The office environment demands so much of my time that it has become my second family. Much like my first family, this second family has tested my personal ethics and values. For example, personal ethics and values will determine if one takes things personally or is professional about them.

My personal ethics allow me to go to work, meet my responsibilities and still have a good time doing my job. This sounds like the perfect place to work, sometimes it is, and sometimes challenges overwhelm me but I manage to surpass them. Having the value of meeting my responsibilities makes problems or other situations easier and less challenging.

Benefits and Advantages

1. Greater income in farmers

Tens of millions of extra tonnes of grain a year are being harvested. The Green Revolution resulted in a record grain output of 11 million tonnes in 178-7. This established India as one of the worlds biggest agricultural producers. Yield per unit of farmland improved by more than 0% between 147 (when India gained political independence) and 17. The crop area under high yielding varieties of wheat and rice grew considerably during the Green Revolution. As The Green Revolution led to sizable increases in returns to land, there was a greater income generated in farmers.

. Stimulation of Rural nonfarm economy (the economy in rural areas excluding farming economy)

With greater income to spend, new needs for farm inputs, and milling and marketing services, farm families led a general increase in demand for goods and services. This stimulated the rural nonfarm economy, which in turn grew and generated significant new income and employment of its own. Real per capita incomes almost doubled in Asia between 170 and 15, and poverty declined from nearly three out of every five Asians in 175 to less than one in three by 15.The absolute number of poor people fell from 1.15 billion in 175 to 85 million in 15 despite a 60 percent increase in population. In India, the percentage of the rural population living below the poverty line fluctuated between 50 and 65 percent before the mid-160s but then declined steadily to about one-third of the rural population by 1. Research studies show that much of this steady decline in poverty is attributable to agricultural growth and associated declines in food prices.

. Creation of new jobs

Due to the improvement of the rural nonfarm economy, more jobs are created and employment rates rose. The Green Revolution created plenty of jobs not only for agricultural workers but also industrial workers by the creation of related facilities such as factories and hydroelectric power stations.

4. Decrease in Famine

The Green Revolution contributed to better nutrition by raising incomes and reducing prices of crops, which more poor people to consume more calories and food. The Great Revolution resulted in a 0% decrease in famine.

5. Advantages of the uses of the Modern Variety (MV) seeds

MV seeds are more tolerant of less favourable climatic conditions. Thus, more areas can be used to grow rice, with increased irrigation and drainage. MV seeds also require a shorter growing season, thus an extra rice crop per year is possible. MV seeds contribute to the increase in income in farmers.

Business Performance ManagementA growing number of business journals, academic institutions, and technology industry analyst firms are ascribing the term "business performance management" to the applied use of software to manage and measure activities that support strategic business goals. As eLearning evolves, many pioneering corporations have moved beyond traditional learning management to a set of initiatives that more closely line up with the concept of business performance management. One example of this is Wachovia, a leading provider of financial services throughout the East Coast and the United States. The company operates full-service banking offices under the First Union and Wachovia names in 11 East Coast states and Washington, D.C., and offers full-service brokerage with offices in 4 states and global services through more than 0 international offices. Operating in an intensely competitive and heavily regulated market, the ability to quickly introduce innovative new products and services, and the ability to demonstrate compliance with complex regulations is essential. The Patriot Act, which was enacted in October of 001 to help combat international terrorism, has added an additional set of compliance requirements to the core set of financial service requirements that are already in place. Wachovia is deploying Docent to ensure its employees have the knowledge and skills to meet these strategic imperatives. Docent recently completed an extensive survey of its global customer base and identified over 15 unique business applications that support and track to the key strategic goals of the corporations in which they are deployed. Several of the most prevalent applications include · Customer and Channel Education Self-service training to improve customer satisfaction, deliver incremental revenue, and reduce support costs. · Product Launch Cross functional and multi-channel education to accelerate go-to-market readiness, provide real time feedback between field sales personnel and corporate marketing staff, and shorten "time to revenue" when rolling out new products. · Sales Force Readiness Designed to shorten the time it takes to bring new sales representatives up to full productivity levels, accelerate ramp up time associated with new product education, ensure up to the minute global competitive intelligence, and improve sales force retention. · Regulatory Compliance Driven by regulatory and statutory guidelines for purposes of protecting customers and employees from hazards and liabilities, minimizing corporate liability risk, accelerating product lifecycles, and promoting a safe and effective working environment. · Corporate University Often the central point for education on business skills (ex. When you sit with a nice girl for two hours, it seems like two minutes. When you sit on a hot stove for two minutes, it seems like two hours thats relativity. -- Albert Einstein.

One hour. Sixty minutes. Three thousand six hundred seconds. Lounging in a living room watching, your favorite television show. An hour can go by faster than a blink of eye. However, when you almost loose your life an hour can seem like an eternity.

When I was fifteen years old my father, stepmother, and myself went to our ranch outside of Temple. I was little for my age and could barely see over the top of the steering wheel of our truck. My father had let me borrow his 001 navy blue Yukon to follow him in our old rusted Ford. After we were done, my Stepmother decided she would lead the way to the farmhouse in her white bronco truck. This was not to appealing to me because I wanted to be in front. Firmly pressing down on the gas pedal I left my stepmother lingering in the dust. At this point I only knew one thing. I wanted to feel the wind run through my hair as I went flying down the old dirt road. As I pushed the motor harder and harder, I knew that I should slow down but needed to feel the adrenaline rush that had propelled me earlier. Heading towards the straightaway I knew that this was the time to see what the Vortec V8 engine could do. Coming upon the final straightaway, I knew that this would be the last time I would be able to feel the freedom of driving that I had been anticipating. During my driving I watched the speedometer race farther to the right. It made me feel so alive, I felt unstoppable. I then turned up the radio to make the experience even more entertaining. As I lifted my head I observed that I was starting to veer off course. Seeing the house approaching in the horizon I was forced to slow down and return to the dirt road. As I applied the brakes the steering wheel jerked and the car began to flip. As the car was upside down I noticed the front window crack into a thousand pieces and the roof cave in. When I came to, my stepmother was dragging my bloody, shirtless body across the rough terrain and into her truck, which had tried to keep up with me. I tried to lift myself up but was unable to because of a pulsating bruise on my right knee. All that I can remember after that was hearing the ambulance siren in the distance.

All of this took place in one simple hour. In this hour my trouble-free life almost came to a screeching halt. I learned that life should not be taken for granted because it can be taken away so quickly. I was very fortunate, and many people do not survive such a horrific accident like this one. Now though, I take life one day at a time, for I know that it can be taken away as fast as an hour.

Please note that this sample paper on interesting hour is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. What is Thinking

What is thinking? Can machines think? If not, why not?

What is thinking? Thinking is one part computation based on interpretation of known facts, one part reasoning, and one-part ethereal interpretations of feelings.

Thinking is not just sheer computational reasoning. It incorporates all that is human. Thought processes are not just black and white they are often varying shades of gray. When a human being confronts a problem they think about it. Humans cannot just compute the answer. It is hard for humans to separate feelings from their thoughts. We even develop modes of trying to, but not completely eliminate feelings from the thought process via critical thinking. This does not mean humans are flawed due to feeling and bias. This is actually an asset in some circumstances.

Can a machine think? In the article, "The day I sensed a new kind of intelligence", by G. Kasparov he described playing an IBM computer in chess. Kasparov highly regarded as the human races foremost authority on chess actually lost to the machine the first time. He described the machine and it's programming as being able to analyze every move to completion of the game prior to moving a piece, as most know in chess this is a decided advantage when you can think ahead several moves. Obviously the computer was able to compare every move made in a scenario against a pre-programmed set of options and make a decision that was to the best of its knowledge the best course of action. The machine failed in future matches, when Kasparov started to vary his moves in irregular sequences. The computer disregarded the variations as insignificant but the creative chess master was able to use these variations to his advantage. This shows that a machine is only as good or as complete as it's programming. The ability for abstract reasoning, a big part of what we describe as sentience is missing.

Why not? It would be naïve to think a machine would never be able to give the appearance of being able to think. The programmed intelligence and technology may get to the point where there is un-measurable difference between the machines decision-making and that of its human counter parts. The true test of thinking is in the realm of the unknown; this is where humans with thought have a distinct advantage. Imagination…. A machine confronted with an unknown problem can only base decisions on known facts i.e. probability based computation of an outcome based on programmed data. A thinking sentient human being on the other hand has the ability to imagine unknown possibilities in order to hypothesize about an outcome, and maybe even react to feelings. Machines do not have this ability, at least not yet.

Please note that this sample paper on What is Thinking is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on What is Thinking, we are here to assist you.
