My identity has been shaped through my mother's and sisters' example in living the gospel. My mother's knowledge of the scriptures and application of them into her life developed the basis of my identity. My eldest sisters involvement in uplifting church music helped me to develop such wonder musical talents. My second eldest sisters faith and testimony of Jesus Christ was an essential development of my identity, making me who I am today.

My mother was such a wonderful example in the way that she could quote almost anything and everything from the scriptures. Ever since I was a little child she counseled me from the scriptures, so that soon enough they became a part of my life and helped me to develop many wonderful characteristics. Her knowledge proved to be extremely valuable in trying times of my life. A recent experience happened at the beginning of this year. I had just turned eighteen and received a calling as a young single adult representative. I planned so many activities and proposed them to the young single adults with so much enthusiasm, but they just sat there and looked at me. Nobody wanted to cooperate and so that afternoon I closed myself off in the room. I felt so discouraged and so depressed that I felt like I had failed my Heavenly Father. That's when mum walked in with her scriptures and additional scripture from the ensign. From these books that she had studied she counseled away. I learned so much about myself. My weakness and my strengths had been unfolded unto me and new characteristics had been planted. Now they are my strongest qualities and all because of they way mum taught me the scriptures.

My eldest sister Eugina was the most talented musician I had ever known. She played the piano so beautifully, enhancing its beauty with her soft sweet harmonious voice and to add to that she played the guitar extremely well. I developed my musical talents as soon as I could reach the piano. When I began to play the guitar, Gina taught me chords. At first it was hard to do quick changes in between chords but I wanted to be just like her if not better. I discovered how to play almost 10 nursery rhymes with just these three chords. The excitement and enthusiasm I had for this vibrant boundless instrument created a passion of music in me. Singing came naturally because Gina turned us four sisters into a quartet. Eugina was the lead singer, of course, Leilani was always the background singer, Esther's sweet high pitched voice inevitably made her the soprano and I was the alto. We always seemed to sing in church meetings and as I grew older I developed an ability to serve through music. Through service I became a better musician. I learnt many skills such as performing and reading music but ultimately I became accomplished in uplifting music and was able to help others and inspire others for good.

The most important things that molded me into the character that I am now are the faith and testimony of my sister Leilani. In my child hood and youth, my family was in trying times. My mother and father had divorced and so everyone lived with mum. She worked really hard to provide for all 8 of us, and so Lani and Gina looked after us little ones. Leilani invested a lot of time into me through school, sports, homework, and entertainment. I can never forget her dedication to the gospel as she devoted so much time into her calling as a young womens leader. She read the scriptures everyday and she bore her testimony all the time. One really special experience that had such an impact on me was the sorrowful event of the death of her daughter, the eldest grandchild. Leilanis faith never wavered, instead she became more converted to the gospel. She was so humble and loving that all she did was bear testimony of the greatness of God. She showed patience and endurance by the way she showed gratitude to Heavenly Father for the wonderful opportunity and privilege she had in bringing up her beautiful little girl. She pointed out to our family that we were privileged to have her for as long as we did because of her disease-Congenital Muscular Dystrophy. All the time that she had invested into me led a desire within to follow her example. I developed these characteristics, that she possessed, for myself.

I am now the person I am today because of these beautiful faithful women who all invested quality time in me. I thank them for their love and devotion.

A Child Called It

I am not a big reader of books, so I thought I had better purchase the book rather than trying to check it out from the library and have it returned on time. I purchased the book in the early afternoon Sunday, January 1, 00, by 60 p.m., I had finished the book. I had a few interruptions but for the most part I could not put the book down. I kept telling myself just one more chapter. I had 6 chapters to read, for homework; from other classes and the next thing I knew I had finished the book.

All my life I wanted to be a social worker. My husband has told me repeatedly that I could not. He says I would have a house filled with children and warrants out for my arrest, and he is right. I have a real sensitive side when it comes to children. If I truly thought a child was in danger I would remove them from the situation, even if that meant keeping them at my house, than so be it. I would rather go to jail than see a child abused in any form.

I am simply appalled that the school system allowed this abuse to go on for so LONG. I understand the unawareness of the times but how can you miss a child wearing the same outfit day after day. This child had older siblings how did the school NOT realize there was something wrong. I am simply flabbergasted that this was and still is happening. My first training as a home family childcare provider took place in Washington State on a Naval Base. Our first assignment was to complete a booklet on child abuse. I just can't believe the teachers, the nurse and the principal did not have any suspicions. Do not get me wrong. I am not a naïve person living within a shell, who does not believe this kind of thing does not happen. Because I am not.

I am all too familiar with abuse. I lived in the south for over five years, I heard of more stories than I could have counted about children not being able to sit down because they were beaten with a switch the night before. This is a common practice as is the whipping with a belt. My best friend from the Navy was raised in Texas along with her husband, they never thought twice about whipping their 4 and 5 year olds with a belt. The children received -7 lashes depending on their "crime", but I could barely stomach the first lash. After the third whopping while I was there I could not take it, slowly I started disconnecting myself from my friend and her family I had grown so near to. To this day I wonder what has become of the children. For my friend and her husband this was a norm in child raising, but for a northern girl I was simply in disbelief. I grew up thinking that being yelled at was the worst punishment ever.

This little boy had siblings. I would love to know what they were thinking, doing and saying. I understand these siblings were terrified of their mother but to let some of these things happen, I just cannot comprehend. My three-year-old daughter tells me if I have done something wrong. I believe this whole town must have went to sleep over this abuse case. The book does not say much about other family members, such as aunts, uncles or grandparents, did they not get together for family gatherings?

I find this boy to be a hero. How he ever made it as far as he did, simply amazes me. This book left me with many questions that will probably never be answered. I can tell you I will be purchasing the next two books after the semester is over. I am so proud of this man that I don't even know. He had a traumatic childhood, not only survived it but had the courage to write about it. This was an excellent book and I strongly recommend it.
