Stuck in the Snow

My arms, head, and legs were all immobilized by the snow's vast pressure and weight. I flashed back to my avalanche preparation course, and remembered not to panic. Then I realized that I really was in the situation everyone talks about and began to panic. It felt like I had been yelling for an hour when I felt a hard plastic shovel hit me in the face. Then I saw the blue sky and took a deep breath. In reality I was under the snow for about two minutes and had been yelling for about a minute and fifty seven seconds. We had been in the back country at Sugar Bowl riding some awesome powder bowls when I went down in the world's smallest avalanche. The snow was awesome and when it is that good I get pumped and take chances that I normally wouldn't.

Before I left the valley I watched an interview with Shaun White, a sixteen year old pro snowboarder, who said, If I hadn't been pushed so hard by my crew I wouldn't have tried the widow maker. At the time I thought, There is no way my friends could talk me into dropping off a cliff let alone the widow maker.

The day after the avalanche experience we went back out into the Sugar Bowl back country. Over night it had dropped a foot and a half fresh powder. We woke up early and rode the chair up to the top of the resort. Now we hiked for two hours to the peak of the mountain. From this high we could see Lake Tahoe and I felt like I was on top of the world. In front of us was a perfect bowl of deep powder and then a wicked run through the trees with some pretty steep cliffs. I had been looking forward to this the whole season. I dropped in to the bowl first and carved out a completely fresh lazy line down to the trees were I stopped and waited for my friends Cole and Curtis. Cole led through the trees because he was an all around better rider than me at the time and we wanted his experience and skill leading the way. All of the sudden he stopped and I noticed a sign on a tree that said, DANGEROUS VERTICAL DROP. The next thing he said will be burnt into my memory forever. Cole said, Dude this is the Widow Maker, no joke!! I was scared out of my mind and the first thing that came to my head was how do I get out of this. I looked at Curtis and said, No way dude! Are you gonna do it? He too was scared and just nodded his head no. Cole on the other hand said, Well than how are we gonna get out? He was right, to get around this cliff it was a long hike and frankly he had more confidence in his cliff dropping skills than I did so he just dropped it and left Curtis and me alone at the top. Both of us were tired so we just sat down and started talking about life, death and other intellectually stimulating conversations pieces. After about an hour I had had enough and told Curtis I would drop it if he did it right after I did, and he agreed to this course of action.

I took a deep breath and pointed my nose straight at the drop. The next thing I knew I was flying through the air at what I thought was slow motion. The hang time was amazing and I have yet to feel that way in my stomach since then. When I landed it was like landing on a pillow topped bed and I just sank into the powder and rode away. Curtis followed me, and we rode in sheer amazement the rest of the way down the hill. At the bottom we found Cole and told him about what we both had just done not noticing anything wrong with him. Then I looked at his shoulder closer and noticed he had problems moving it and his right one looked like it had raised and inch or two. I later learned that he had fallen on the Widow Maker and broken his collar bone. Curtis and I joked about how we were going to give Shaun White a run for his money, and win the Snowboarding Pro Tour ever since then.
