A Tragedy Waiting to Happen
The results of this horrible disaster left her disfigured. Her face will never look the same, nor will she ever have the every-day luxury of having a full head of hair again. She is not ashamed of her disfigurements, though; she does not conceal it because she wants to encourage people to question her about what happened, so she can tell her story… She was a Resident's Assistant at Seton Hall University, awoken on a Wednesday night in January of 000 to a fire alarm. She was not worried, though, because it was not uncommon for this particular university to have false fire alarms go off. After she had woken up, she did what she was supposed to do as an R.A. and investigated the situation. When she shockingly found definite signs of a fire that happened to be growing very rapidly, she immediately notified public safety. It was not much longer before she realized that if she did not make the effort to go and wake the students further down the hall, then they probably would never wake up. The alarm was not loud enough to get them up, and they also had more than likely been partying earlier that night, so that factor would also lessen their chances of waking up to the alarm. This brave girl then went above and beyond what she had to do and started going door-to-door as the fire grew fiercer, waking the students up. She continued to save the lives of numerous individuals until she was overcome by smoke. The fire did end up giving her second and third degree burns, but she miraculously made it out alive. Unfortunately, she was certainly not the only one that was injured, and there were even a few deaths. According to the website Boland Hall, the fire "claimed the lives of three students

and injured fifty-eight others." Boland Hall also describes that horrific day in January at Seton Hall University as being "the darkest day in its history." The brave R.A. likes to tell the story of this dark day because it has now made her an advocate of fire safety. That night was a rude awakening of the major changes that Seton Hall University, as well as many other campuses, needed to undergo. Muskingum College is one campus that still needs to undergo some of these changes and make some significant improvements with fire safety.
Fire safety at Muskingum College is not taken seriously enough. Bruce Sindeldecker, the fire chief at Perry Township, recalls a time when he went on a fire run with New Concord Fire Department. It occurred about a year ago at Kelley Hall, "I was completely amazed to find that, despite the fire alarm, the cooks continued working and completely ignored the chance of an actual fire." People have become so nonchalant about these serious situations because of the high occurrence of false alarms. A volunteer firefighter for N.C.F.D., Eli Shegog, verifies this, "When I first joined the department we had a false fire alarm at Muskingum College at least every weekend." He also recalls circumstances similar to this about a year ago, "Every Wednesday we had to go to a false fire alarm at the same location on Muskingum's Campus, until the wrongdoer was finally caught." Lack of training and education is also a problem with fire safety on our campus. The immediate effect of this lack of knowledge and carefree attitudes is a greater chance for false fire alarms. The ultimate effect of this would, sad enough, be a repeat of the Seton Hall fire.
The ideal solution to these problems is mandatory evacuation for each and every time the fire alarm goes off, and educating the staff and students on fire awareness. Mandatory evacuation would dramatically reduce the amount of false fire alarms because if certain

individuals came to realize that pulling the fire alarm meant he or she absolutely had to evacuate, then he/she would stop doing it, or his or her peers would force that individual to stop. The key to mandatory evacuation is having a policy concerning this that the resident hall staff members understand that he/she must enforce it. To accomplish this we must first train our resident hall staff members. According to the Seton Hall University Website, they are a thriving example of this, "Our residence hall staff members participate in a minimum of eight hours of training related to fire safety." Chief Sindeldecker also suggests that there be "at least two drills per year in all residence halls." This would teach students how to properly evacuate the halls, and keep the students aware of the fire procedure. Purchasing new equipment and checking on the current equipment would also help with fire safety.
Many argue that evacuation is unnecessary and sometimes even cruel to students during bad weather conditions. It must be realized that if sacrificing a few minutes on one's time while standing in the cold will prevent another tragedy, then suck it up. It is not worth the risk. Also, it is hardly an issue because once it is realized that everyone must evacuate, than false fire alarms will almost be non-existent. Muskingum College currently has a policy of a fine for students who refuse to leave the room during a fire drill. This is certainly a good start, but it definitely needs to be enforced. This would be more likely if residence hall staff members were better educated. Everything boils down to the need for Muskingum College to act now; we need to learn from the mistakes of other campuses, rather than experience the tragedy all over again.
