Ansel Adams was born to Charles Hitchcock Adams and Olive Bray Adams on February 0, 10. For the first part of his life he enjoyed a wealthy lifestyle due to his grandfather's prosperous business. After his father retired, Charles Adams took over the family business but a series of calamities, including a devastating earthquake in April of 106, caused the Adams family to lose their fortune and live in the brink of bankruptcy for the rest of Charles's life.

During this time, Ansel attended many public and private schools, but his hyperactive behavior caused him to be expelled from all of them, from when he was nine until he was 1 years old and was educated at home by his father and other private tutors. It was then when he started showing interest in the piano, an instrument that his mother mastered. His father encouraged his interest by hiring very strict piano teachers, one of which taught him discipline and the pursuit of long-term goals despite his hyperactive personality.

The film outlines the triumphs and sacrifices of one man who made a difference by changing his overall perspective on life, from money to human sympathy. The film also outlines the dramas of those Jews who survived against all odds in one of the darkest chapters in human history because of what Schindler did.

The whole overall aspect of Schindler's List is to portray and reflect on the good deeds and sacrifices one man, Oskar Schindler made to help his fellow man.

Spielburg uses black and white images to give the film the realistic feeling of a film during that era. The limited use of coloured images lets that image be more impactive and meaningful.

Oskar Schindler arrived in Cracow, Poland, at the beginning of the German occupation. His first effort as shown in the film, was to benefit from the misfortune of the Jews who had recently been prohibited by law from owning a business. As an added incentive for them to invest in his new business, he offered to give jobs working at his factory for those who chose to invest and their families.

This first view of Schindler is one of a greedy, money hungry man trying to seize any opportunity that comes across, even if it means feeding on the misfortunes of other people. But what we begin to realize is that that is not the case.

The use of the up-close camera work used allows for the viewer to see and feel the emotions personally present in the film.

For years the relationships between Schindler and his Jewish workers were cautious. But as the situation for the Jews in Poland worsened, the workers at Schindler's factory noticed that they were somehow protected, And this is where the change in Schindler's perspective on life took place. After the evacuation of the Jewish people from the Ghetto, which resulted in hundreds of Jewish people killed, Schindler started to realize himself that his factory was a kind of ‘haven' for the Jewish people.

The use of dialogue helps outline Schindler's personality and objectify the aspect of change.

Schindler's political views and his charming personality made him popular amongst the nazi officials, which in turn allowed him to get a hold of anything or anyone he needed.

Schindler kept telling the German officials that he knew how to get work out of the Jews and that he wanted more brought into his factory. In this way he managed to bring into the factory, and in turn save, many Jewish people. Schindler's acts of kindness and courage helped save lives on a daily basis.

Silence is used throughout the film effectively as it keeps the viewer in suspense, and allows the viewer to focus on the images being presented. The sound effects used give the movie everything but a surreal fell, it helps strike fear in the hearts of the viewer as the sound of gunfire is heard or the sound of the demoralized and dehumanized voices of the Jewish people, outlining the horrors of which Schindler has saved these people from.

From watching Schindler's List I have came to the conclusion that change can be for the good as well as the bad. That people are capable to anything they put their mind to as shown by Oskar Schindler in the time of major oppression.

The change in perspective that Oscar Schindler took on as a kind of ‘liberator' was definitely one for the better, as it did not only save The Jewish peoples lives it helped secure his life as well. A Child Called It

I am not a big reader of books, so I thought I had better purchase the book rather than trying to check it out from the library and have it returned on time. I purchased the book in the early afternoon Sunday, January 1, 00, by 60 p.m., I had finished the book. I had a few interruptions but for the most part I could not put the book down. I kept telling myself just one more chapter. I had 6 chapters to read, for homework; from other classes and the next thing I knew I had finished the book.

All my life I wanted to be a social worker. My husband has told me repeatedly that I could not. He says I would have a house filled with children and warrants out for my arrest, and he is right. I have a real sensitive side when it comes to children. If I truly thought a child was in danger I would remove them from the situation, even if that meant keeping them at my house, than so be it. I would rather go to jail than see a child abused in any form.

I am simply appalled that the school system allowed this abuse to go on for so LONG. I understand the unawareness of the times but how can you miss a child wearing the same outfit day after day. This child had older siblings how did the school NOT realize there was something wrong. I am simply flabbergasted that this was and still is happening. My first training as a home family childcare provider took place in Washington State on a Naval Base. Our first assignment was to complete a booklet on child abuse. I just can't believe the teachers, the nurse and the principal did not have any suspicions. Do not get me wrong. I am not a naïve person living within a shell, who does not believe this kind of thing does not happen. Because I am not.

I am all too familiar with abuse. I lived in the south for over five years, I heard of more stories than I could have counted about children not being able to sit down because they were beaten with a switch the night before. This is a common practice as is the whipping with a belt. My best friend from the Navy was raised in Texas along with her husband, they never thought twice about whipping their 4 and 5 year olds with a belt. The children received -7 lashes depending on their "crime", but I could barely stomach the first lash. After the third whopping while I was there I could not take it, slowly I started disconnecting myself from my friend and her family I had grown so near to. To this day I wonder what has become of the children. For my friend and her husband this was a norm in child raising, but for a northern girl I was simply in disbelief. I grew up thinking that being yelled at was the worst punishment ever.

This little boy had siblings. I would love to know what they were thinking, doing and saying. I understand these siblings were terrified of their mother but to let some of these things happen, I just cannot comprehend. My three-year-old daughter tells me if I have done something wrong. I believe this whole town must have went to sleep over this abuse case. The book does not say much about other family members, such as aunts, uncles or grandparents, did they not get together for family gatherings?

I find this boy to be a hero. How he ever made it as far as he did, simply amazes me. This book left me with many questions that will probably never be answered. I can tell you I will be purchasing the next two books after the semester is over. I am so proud of this man that I don't even know. He had a traumatic childhood, not only survived it but had the courage to write about it. This was an excellent book and I strongly recommend it.

"The Hand" is an intriguing story of a newlywed couple just beginning their fairy tale journey together. As the loving couple lay together one evening, the wife adoringly inspects her prince charming. She adores and admires him, and is well pleased with his physical beauty. It is at this point that she notices something awful about him. It is in plain sight, it is frightening, and monstrous. How could she have missed this thing? What else had she overlooked or missed? This is the reality and dilemma that Sidonie Colette addresses in her short story, "The Hand". In the "The Hand" the young wife is a dynamic character because she goes from being completely in love with her husband to feeling completely submissive to him.

The young wife in "The Hand" is a dynamic character because through a series of observations during the course of one night, the wife begins to transition. The young wife starts the transition from a woman that has given herself so completely to her new husband that she can see no blemish, into a woman that feels threatened and intimidated by a physical feature that had once brought her joy and pleasure.

Sidonie Colette opens "The Hand" with a newlywed couple that is attempting to sleep. The reader is immediately made aware of two things; one is the complete devotion this young wife has for her husband, and the second is the dominating hand of her husband. The complete devotion this young wife has for her husband is made aware in the first paragraph. Colette allows the reader to know that this young woman is fascinated with her husband and all of his features "He had fallen asleep on his young wife's shoulder, and she proudly bore the weight of the man's head…" (8). Colette uses the thoughts of the young wife to allow the reader to know the mindset of this young woman. Colette also uses the wife's thoughts in order to leave clues for the reader to understand that this relationship is more about domination than love. "He had slipped his big arm under the small of her slim, adolescent back, and his strong hand lay on the sheet…" (8). The use of words here, such as "big arm", and "small of her slim, adolescent back" suggests the very idea that the husband is dominating and the wife is submissive.

The reader is lead to believe that the young woman is naïve, submissive, and is completely blinded by her love for husband. She cannot see who he truly is. However, it is not until the middle of the story that this young wife begins to change her opinion, and ultimately her feelings, for her husband "And I've kissed that hand!...How horrible! Haven't I ever looked at it?" (). This statement by the author gives the reader the opportunity to see that this once young and naïve wife is now beginning to transform into a woman who sees her husband for who he truly is, and not who she wants him to be.

Colette leaves other important clues in order for the reader to know that the young wife is beginning to change. For example, one passage reads "…so the hand suddenly took on a vile, apelike appearance" (). The hand taking on an "apelike appearance" leads the reader to believe that the young woman is finally beginning to see her husband as a strong and dominating force in their relationship. Another clue is the use of the word "Oh". The use of the word "Oh" is an important clue because it is used as an injector into the thoughts of the young wife. The word "Oh" is used as a clear indicator that the wife is beginning to get over the complete blindness she has for the relationship, and to start to visualize her life within the relationship. She recognizes that her reality will be "…beginning her life of duplicity, or resignation, and of a lowly, delicate diplomacy…" ().

As the story progresses, the author uses a series of animal metaphors in order to show the transition to terror that grips the wife. Starting with the non-threatening "…Blue curtains … instead of apricot-pink…" (8) as symbolic of male and female, then continuing with phrases such as "…As if I were lying on some animal" ();"Vile, apelike appearance" (); "…lowered its claws, became a pliant beast…" (); "…methodical pleasure of a strangler" (); "…ghastly thumb…" (). This series of increasing intensely terrifying descriptions show the changes that take place in the young wife's mind. It is as though the wife has secretly witnessed her husband transition from a man into a werewolf and back again into a man. By the end of the story, the wife knows that no matter how passive the husband may appear at that moment, the werewolf is just below the surface and barely out of sight. Her mission would be to do all possible to ensure that the werewolf stayed below the surface.

"The Hand" is a story, which symbolizes submission and domination. Colette takes a naïve wife, who was blinded by love, and turns her into a woman who now sees her husband as a "dominating king". In the beginning of this story, the young wife thought her marriage and life would be everything she every dreamed of, but it was not until the middle of the night and during breakfast the next morning, that she realized her life would be everything but a fairy tale. "…beginning her life of duplicity, or resignation, and of a lowly, delicate diplomacy, she leaned over and humbly kissed the monstrous hand" (). In The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane, irony is often used during Henry's time fighting in the war. The irony helps to show how war does not always work out the way people, such as Henry, thought it would. It is present during his decision to enter all the way through to the end of the book. It helps to illustrate Henry's hardships throughout the book as well.

One of the first points of irony in the story occurs when Henry is deciding whether to join the war effort or not and he consults his mother. He travels to a neighboring town to enlist in the war, which he dreamed would bring him glory, and returns to inform his mother. Instead of jubilation and satisfaction, as he contemplated happening, she would rather just have him bring his clothes home when they raggedy and to care for himself. It is ironic that the feelings that he reflected upon, glory and pride, his mother did not even mention and caused Henry to second guess his pronouncement to enlist in the army.. " He bowed his head and went on, feeling suddenly ashamed of his purposes" (p 7). An additional significant example of irony within the book is when Henry obtains his "red badge of courage." After he is struck on the head and is reunited with his company, he lies about being shot and Wilson views his wound. He felt important after Wilson takes satisfaction in caring for him and is worried about his health. The irony involved in this is that he can still feel like a man after he lies about his injury although he has seen soldiers with authentic "red badges of courage" and he acknowledges that these men, such as the tattered soldier, are the real soldiers in the army. He even admits that he is ashamed to be around these wounded soldiers because he has not obtained a war-induced wound of his own.

When Henry initially meets the tattered soldier and is reunited with his friend Jim Conklin, he realizes that Jim is on the verge of dying. They stagger into an open area near the forest and Jim dies a slow but sure death. It is ironic for the reason that this is exactly what Henry had wished upon himself in his thoughts. He had dreamed that he would die an honorable death fighting bravely during war which is what happened to Jim. Witnessing Jim Conklin's demise made Henry experience rage inside himself and from that the point on he fought in the war with a passion as if fighting in the memory of Jim. "The youth turned, with sudden, livid rage, toward the battle-field. He shook his fist. He seemed about to deliver a philippic" (p 66). While Henry was uncertain of what he would do during his first battle, fight or run, one soldier was convinced he knew what he was going to do. Wilson knew that he would fight a valiant battle and would never run . He even scolds Henry for just mentioning deserting a battle. Once the first battle comes around, Wilson is the one that says that he won't be able to survive the war. " I'm a gone coon this first time and -- and I w-want you to take these here things--to--my--folks.' He ended in a quavering sob of pity for himself. He handed the youth a little packet done up in a yellow envelope" (p 1).

While walking through the forest to get away the horrors of the war, Henry comes upon a "chapel" of trees with a deceased soldier within it. He examines the combatant and notices that ants are swarming across the decaying corpse and is anxious to leave. As he is departing, he hears the firing of guns and the explosion of cannons. He investigates and he comes upon the edge of the forest and realizes that he has just ventured upon the one thing that he wishes not to witness, war. Henry also comes upon an abundant number of dead soldiers spread across an empty pasture. This is also ironic for the fact that he continues to come across something he repeatedly desires upon himself, death. This is also the instance when he comes across the group of wounded soldiers trudging along, and realizes that these are the true men in the army and is ashamed to be around them. The last instance of irony is this scene is that it takes Henry seeing injured soldiers to realize that what he has been doing, fleeing, is the cowards way out. Also, when Henry obtains the flag from a fallen soldier, there is a trace of irony. As he is carrying the flag, Henry as well as Wilson both sustain themselves in the front of the regiment and assist in leading their comrades. The colonel even comments on how both Henry and Wilson kept the flag up in front and "were howling like Indians." Once Henry gets hold of the flag, he does not consider the dangers of war and puts himself right into the perils of the frontline but when it was just him, he would often fall back behind the rest of his regiment, frightened by war. Just holding the flag makes a entirely different Henry then at the beginning of the story.

Once these ironic situations transpire in the book, Henry often changes his thought process. Once Jim dies, he decides he desires to fight and not flee anymore and once he obtains the flag, he proceeds to the forefront of the regiment. The title of the story is even ironical since Henry by no means actually obtains his "red badge of courage." Crane uses irony to illustrate great moments in the book which makes it one of the preeminent war novels ever written.

Nora did not consider herself when trying to save Torvald, she acted in a completely sacrificial way. Offred sacrifices her body in order to remain a handmaid, she had the choice to be a handmaid, to be rebellious like Moira, or join the women in the colony. "Nothing is going on here [the ceremony] that I haven't signed up for. There wasn't a lot of choice but there was some, and this is what I chose" (A Handmaind's Tale 4). Nora sacrifices her comfortable life with Torvald and her children because she wants to do what she knows is right for her. She does not want to be in a marriage without love, "Good-bye, Torvald. I wont see the little ones. I know they are in better hands than mine. As I am now, I can be of no use to them" ("A Doll's House" 67). Nora knows that she is useless to the children so she sacrifces her life with them because she knows that leaving Torvald is the right thing to do. Offred gives up, or sacrifices, her love and hope for Luke, and their marriage vows are sacrificed so that she can fall in love with Nick, "It's so good, to be touched by someone, to be felt so greedily. "I would like to steal something from this room... Every once in a while I would take it out and look at it. It would make me feel that I have power" (The Handmaid's Tale 80-81). By using her imagination Offred perserveareds though the hard times. When Krogstad threatens Nora's reputation she tries to calm herself so that she can go on through the tough situation. She maintains her hope, "Nonsense! Trying to frighten me like that!- I am not so silly as he thinks" ("A Doll's House" 5). Offred shows persevearence for her future, "As long as we do this, butter our skin to keep it soft, we can believe thatwe will be touched again, in love or desire" (The Handmaid's Tale 7). This shows Offred maintains her hope that one day she will get though everything terrible and that her life will go back to normal. Nora makes the difficult decision to leave Torvald and to do this she uses her perseverence in order to keep her confidence in leaving Torvald. "That makes it all the more certain that it must be done [Leaving her family]" ("A Doll's house 67). Offred uses prayer as a way of perservearing though the difficult times, "This is monstrous, but never the less it's true. Death makes me hungry. Maybe because I've been emptied, or maybe its my body's way of seeing to it that I remain alive, continue to repeat it's bedrock prayer I am I am I am still" (The Handmaids Tale 76). Perservearence is a trait exhibited by both Nora and Offred which shows how heroic each of them actually are.

Both women show the ability to face any danger without feara, they prove they have true courage, a trait of heroism. Offred shows her courage when she risks her life while walking with Ofglen and secretly talking about their lives. "'Do you think God listens, she says, to these machines?' ‘No,' I say. ‘Neither do I,' she says" (The Handmaid's Tale 168). Mrs. Linde gives Nora courage, "you are not you father's daughter for nothing" ("A Doll's House" 1). By hearing warm words from freinds Nora feels stronger, it helps to give herself courage. I believe that as the length of the wire increases so will the resistance. This is because the electricity will lose energy the further it needs to travel.

Does the cross-sectional area affect resistance?

I think this does affect the resistance because the thinner the wire is, the faster it heats up and the heat causes more resistance as the particles vibrate more. Also, if the wire is thinner, there is less room for the electricity to flow through, so there will be more collisions between electrons and atoms, which will restrict movement, whereas with a thicker wire there is more room for the electricity to flow through. Therefore, I believe that the thinner the wire is, the more resistance there is.

Analysis-

In my plan I predicted that as the length of the wire increases, the resistance would also increase. The graph shows that if the length is doubled so does the resistance, so this means they are directly proportional.

The graph proves this is correct because it shows that as I double the length, the resistance is doubled, making a straight line on the graph.

Also in my prediction, I predicted that as the cross sectional area is increased, the resistance decreases. Further more if the area is doubled, the resistance is halved meaning that they are inversely proportional I proved this on my graph by comparing av. resistance against 1/cross sectional area because it would form a straight line and would be easier to analyse.
