Ansel Adams was born to Charles Hitchcock Adams and Olive Bray Adams on February 0, 10. For the first part of his life he enjoyed a wealthy lifestyle due to his grandfather's prosperous business. After his father retired, Charles Adams took over the family business but a series of calamities, including a devastating earthquake in April of 106, caused the Adams family to lose their fortune and live in the brink of bankruptcy for the rest of Charles's life.

During this time, Ansel attended many public and private schools, but his hyperactive behavior caused him to be expelled from all of them, from when he was nine until he was 1 years old and was educated at home by his father and other private tutors. It was then when he started showing interest in the piano, an instrument that his mother mastered. His father encouraged his interest by hiring very strict piano teachers, one of which taught him discipline and the pursuit of long-term goals despite his hyperactive personality.

In spring of 116, his aunt gave him a copy of "In the Heart of the Sierras", a book by James M. Hutchings. Upon reading this book, he insisted that his parents take him to Yosemite to experience the beauties in the pictures first hand. A few weeks later, the family set out to Yosemite, where Ansel was given his first camera, a Kodak No. 1 Box Brownie, by his father. He fell in love with the park and returned every year for the rest of his life. Ansel continued to use the camera when he returned to San Francisco because of his love for mechanical devices. He took standard photographs of his home, Baker Beach, and the surrounding dunes.

While he continued his home schooling, he started working as a darkroom assistant for his neighbor Fred Dittman. Here, he learned the basics and the chemistry of developing and printing, although the techniques were very rudimentary at the time, so the prints had a limited life span.

His interest in photography was influenced by his love of music. He adopted the discipline he acquired from the music lessons and became immersed in photography, although his passion was still the piano; so much that he almost made a career as a concert pianist. His creativity and vision were highly influenced by Bach and Beethoven, and he acquired from the latter a "profound and unified vision of the universe".

When he was 18 years old, he applied for the position of caretaker at the Sierra Club's LeConte Memorial Lodge. Despite his short age, he was awarded the position and moved to Yosemite in April, when he began hiking the peaks with his new Graflex view camera, glass plates, and wooden tripod. He worked on his photography during all of his spare time, a hobby that his father greatly encouraged.

In 10 he began exploring deeper into the Sierras and writing romantic poetry, another one of his life passions. He practiced all these forms of art during the summers he spent in Yosemite, the only downfall being that he didn't have a piano on which to exercise his fingers; until he met Harry Best, who lent Ansel his personal studio so that Ansel could practice every day and not lose his abilities. It was during these practice sessions that he met Harry West's daughter, Virginia, the woman he would marry years later.

In 1 he started giving piano lessons to establish his reputation, as well as to help his father with household expenses. He also continued his photographic work by making portraits for people and other works for companies, although he wasn't very successful at first so his music still came first to him.

With new equipment in 16, he set out to explore the Sierras for seven weeks with the other Sierra Club members. This is when he produced the first prints that portrayed his feelings about the mountains. With the help of Albert Bender, Ansel published his first portfolio titled "Parmelian Prints of the High Sierras", a title that he regretted years later. By 17 he believed that it was his destiny to become a creative artist, but he also believed that he was meant to encourage the ideals of conservation. His challenge was finding a way to combine the two. With the success of his book and the realization that music would not be his formal career, he decided that it was time to form a family; so on January, 18 he married Virginia Best in his beloved Yosemite.

By 10 Adams was immersed in music, photography, and now poetry and philosophy; trying to discover the "route to intimate knowledge". Between 17 and 145 he created many prints taken from the Sierras and compiled them into albums; this later became a Sierra Club tradition.

In 17 he was given full sponsorship, by Walter Starr, to take pictures of the Sierra for a book that would serve as a memorial to Walter Starr Jr., who died climbing the mountains. Adams accepted the challenge, believing that he had to capture the best images of the Sierras, as this part of his life was over; but he turned out to be wrong.

At around this time, he also provided the National Parks Service with a large collection of photographs in order to promote the establishment of a national park in the area of Kings Canyon, which was finally established in 140.

After these happenings, Adams's photographic career flourished. He published more works, participated in conferences and was invited to attend and participate in many exhibitions.

In 10, Stieglitz opened a show, featuring 45 prints by Ansel Adams, securing Adams's fame. After three years under Stieglitz's tutelage, Ansel made tremendous progress that was expressed in his work.

In 145 Adams created a department of photography in the California School of Fine Arts. Minor White was hired to be a photography teacher and his classes were considered to be therapy sessions that "disclosed the unconscious mind of the photographer hidden behind the image".

By the 160's and 170's Adams was more involved in politics than he had ever desired to be, but his involvement was solely for the protection and conservation of the environment and mainly for the Sierras.

To this day, Ansel Adams is considered the best photographer in America, and possibly the world. It was because of his deep involvement in the artistic community that photography is now considered a fine art. ÿ DAWSON, Robert et.al. ANSEL ADAMS, NEW LIGHT. First Edition. 1.
