The art of communication has been one that has been practiced for many years. From the days of the cave man to present day, in order to effectively work together we have to be able to communicate effectively. The process of communication between parties is relatively simple, containing encoded messages from the source to the receiver. While perceived messages are therefore taken by the recipient and in turn sent back to the source for verification. During the process of the source verifying the intended message from the recipient, various "noise" or feedback may distort the exchange of intended messages. Within this paper two communication examples will be given following the outline of the fore mentioned communication process.

Communication within the workplace is a must; otherwise there would be no place of business. With technology increasing very rapidly these days, different forms of communication are emerging. From personal conversations to emails, faxing, phones, text messaging etc, communication today is finding easier and more effective ways to deliver messages. The first example that will be illustrated will be about our yearly reviews that our business has with each of our respective employees. Each year my partner and I sit down with each of our employees and we do a yearly review, comparing the previous year to the current year. We value the review as it gives us some good insight into the performance levels of each employee however it causes some nervous energy within the workplace. I can definitely tell when the month before a review is coming as it is our most productive month. Everyone seems to be pushing for the sale a bit harder during these times, trying to make up for times when they weren't as motivated. In this particular case we are the source and each and every employee is the receiver. The "noise" in this example is usually the emotions getting in the way of the message that is being sent. Quite often I have found the body language change negatively and positively when they are told the results of their years performance. Causing them to become distracted from the material that is being reviewed, until they are told whether they are receiving a raise or not. I find this example to lean more towards the unsuccessful side as the communication process has shown me, from this example, that it can be broken down and the intended message distorted. I believe this example leans more towards the efficiency factor than the effective factor as the message is sent and received rather quickly. However the intended message can be received in too many ways, causing the messages to again become too distorted.

The second example I will discuss is the communication process between our company and our vendors. Over time we have finally come together to form a process for communicating that has made our businesses much more efficient and effective. Both the vendors and our business have appointed one person at each place to be the primary contact. Therefore reducing the amounts of people who are ordering product as well as hopefully reducing the amounts of mistakes that have occurred in the past. The communication process follows the model very closely and with little to no noise or feedback. As the process has occurred so often and our documentation is so elaborate that we effectively have been able to send our information and been able to receive our product with much less errors than before. In this case, depending on who initiates the communication, we are the source asking for something and our vendors are the receivers as they are giving us something based on our request. As stated previously, there is little to no noise that can be derived from the source because in order for the receiver to process an order a checklist of items needs to be completed. This in turn has allowed us to become a more efficient and effective business as we have less errors that cost us money. And with only one person handling all the ordering we are allowing us to become more efficient by keeping our sales personnel focused and motivated for the next sale.

In conclusion, communicating may be getting easier to do, but without the basic understanding of the process errors or distorted transmissions are more likely to occur.
