Economic Priorities

The United Stated of America is commonly referred to as a melting pot. The fact that we as a nation can encompass so many different cultures, religions, and economic aspects is amazing. Even though we intertwine these cultural differences in a respectful manner, we can't help at times to become bias towards others customs and lifestyles. Many questions arise about this subject. Can we effectively live together and respect others cultures and values? I began to examine this topic by exploring two texts a short story written by B. Traven called Assembly Line, and a chapter out of Alan Thein Durnings How Much Is Enough named The Conundrum of Consumption.

In Travens Assembly Line, he takes a look at an encounter between two economic systems the industrial American mentality of Mr. Winthrop and the self-sufficient mentality of the Indian craftsman. Mr. Winthrop recognizes that with mass production of these Indian baskets the market price will increase significantly, what he fails to understand is the economic and social imbalance that will take place in the Mexican village if the Indian agrees with his plan. The Indian recognizes the risks and knows that this will violently disrupt the goal of subsistence to a goal of accumulating wealth. Instead of the Indian cutting prices on the baskets, which would actually make sense in an industrialized economic system, he raises the prices per basket. Mr. Winthrop becomes enraged at this idea and cannot understand the logic in the Indians negotiations. Despite the misunderstanding the Indian successfully defends his self-sustaining lifestyle against the idea of industrial capitalism.

In Durnings writings The Conundrum of Consumption he asserts that The society born in the United States into the 10s has moved far beyond American borders(71), it has in a way became harmful to the environment. Durning suggests that we should curb our consumption and give up our fixation on money and material goods. Durning provides many examples within his writings of producers trying to capitalize on green consumption, the attempt by producers to convince potential customers that buying a specific product will benefit the earth. The big question Durning wants readers to answer is Can we consume our way out of our environmental predicament(74)? Traven and Durning emphasize the economic imbalance in American industrialized lifestyle. Traven and Durning both share similar views on the way Americans go about economic success. Traven goes about expressing his ideas in an indirect way. In Assembly Line, Traven is not trying to paint industrialism as good or bad, but rather to see differences between the two men and their views. Im the smart guy who discovered these baskets and since Im the only Jack who knows where to lay his hands on more, Im selling to the highest bidder(61). Winthrop is definitely all about profit and gain regardless of what it takes. This industrial mentality is very common in American society today. The Indian on the other hand looks at the pros and cons of the situation. The Indians definition of economic success is based on a completely different set of standards. His customs and lifestyle cause him to deny the wealth and to continue the goal of a self-sustaining lifestyle. Traven wants readers to understand that the Industrial mentality is not the only means for economic success.

In contrast Durning seems to think the way we have been living is doing more harm than good. Opinion surveys in the worlds two largest countries-Japan and The United States-show that people increasingly measure success by the amount they consume(7). Durning believes that as a whole our economic priorities are not balanced. The emphasis made on our consumption of goods is placed too high on our priority list. He also takes a look at companies and their contribution to the problem. If nature had a CEO this would be the company car, proclaims a 16 Toyota Ad for The Land Cruiser(7). Durning takes more of a direct shot toward or economic system and the way it functions.

Despite the recognition of our economic faults by both writers, they disagree on the ways to go about changing. Durning takes a critical and direct approach with examples to back him up. Traven wants the readers to recognize the cultural differences that cause economical differences. The idea that cultural differences spawn somewhat of a different economical approach is accurate. I believe that if I was born and raised with different customs my goals would probably vary. Travens work helps me recognize these things and appreciate other cultures. The priority the Indian has on growing his own food is a custom, whereas my family would go to the groceries and make a purchase. Travens writings about two clashing economic systems keep my eyes open to other cultures and their lifestyles. Durning honestly believes that the idea of success by consumption has been the priority for too long. His ideas are very critical but contain very persuasive facts. Traven and Durning both have their own unique approach at getting readers to see their ideas. Both pieces of my work have me questioning our economic priorities as well as enhancing my ability to recognize the cultural differences in our society.

The ability to recognize the cultural and social differences in society can help us intertwine ideas to form a more efficient and relative economic system. When two people are confident and comfortable with each other, this could be the sign of love. Love is not control or obsession over another person, but the fulfillment and joy that each person gives to one another. Each person sees this affection as his or her obligation. Love for a person can also be shown when they must sever connections from each other because of an obligation to others. When this connection is gone, there is either a will to let go or a desperate attempt to hold on to that love. In Homer's Odyssey and in Virgil's Aeneid, love and the willingness to let go can cause different reactions with different women.

Circe, in Homer's Odyssey, finds when the love is gone; she is willing to let it go. Circe is an immortal, enchanting sorceress who inhabits the island of Aenea. Odysseus and his men land on her island. Circe turns some of the men into swine by drugging them "to wipe from their memories any thought of home"(Od 10.60). She tries to do the same to Odysseus, but with the help of Hermes, does not to succumb to her magic potion, makes her take a oath to release his men and promises to take her to bed only if she "…never plot some new intrigue to harm me!" (Od 10.8). Odysseus gains Circe's respect, admiration, and love. Circe tells him "Never has any man withstood my potion…" (Od 10.6). "Come, sheath your sword, let us go to bed together/ mount my bed, and mix the magic of love / we'll breed deep in trust between us" (Od 10.70-7). Circe may not be truly in love with Odysseus, but she desires him. Even though Odysseus and his men enjoy Circe's hospitality, after a year, the men grow anxious to leave. Odysseus, also, desires leave to find his way home to Ithaca and his wife. His homesickness is more powerful than the temptation of Circe. Even though Circe wants him to stay, she states " Royal son of Laertes, Odysseus, old campaigner, stay on no more in my house against your will"(Od 10.57-58). She even tells Odysseus to seek the blind prophet Teiresias' help. "He will tell you the way to go, the stages of your voyage, / how you can cross the swarming sea and reach home at last"(Od 10.54-55). She willingly gives him this information because she knows she cannot stop him and wants him to have a safe journey. Circe shows she is an independent and empowered lover. She uses her ability to seduce, enchant, and charm Odysseus to love her. Circe realizes that she had met a man who has matched her abilities and saw Odysseus as her equal. She gave Odysseus' men their freedom and treated them warmly in hope that Odysseus would stay to form a team of magic and cunningness. She finds she cannot hold him with these jesters and is willing to let him go because to do otherwise would be pointless.

Dido, in Virgil's Aeneid, unlike Circe shows the opposite reaction to love and the willingness to let go. Dido, at first, is a strong, proud, clear-headed women who is queen of Carthage. This is until she falls passionately in love with Aeneas who finds his way to her land. With the aid of Venus, Aeneas' mother and Cupid, his brother, scheme to make Dido and Aeneas fall in love. "Unlucky Dido, burning in her madness / Roamed through all the city, like a doe / Hit by an arrow shoot far away…" (Aen 4.5-7). She loses all understanding of reality, forgets hear oath to her dead husband to never marry again. Dido has had no need for love since the death of her husband, Sychaeus, until she met Aeneas. Dido has found the qualities in him that are equal to hers which will make a perfect love match. Dido tells her sister, Anna "At the mere thought of torch and bridal bed/ I would perhaps give way in this case/ this man alone has wrought upon me so / and moved my soul to yield" (Aen 4.5-1). Anna tells her to go follow these feelings. She also tells Dido; "Sister, What a great city you'll see rising here, / And what a kingdom, from this royal match!" (Aen 4.66-68). This passionate love slowly eats away at her and strips away her integrity and authority as queen. Dido goes as far as to consummate her love for Aeneas in a cave during a hunt into a union of so-called marriage. "She thought no longer a secret love…/But called it marriage"(Aen 46-7). She feels this so-called marriage will make Aeneas more willing to stay with her and forget about finding Italy. The problem with this so- marriage is that Dido's love for Aeneas is more than his love for her. Aeneas' respect for the gods and love of his people is stronger than his love for her. Mercury is sent by Jupiter to remind Aeneas of his destiny. Aeneas decides he must leave and continue his journey to find Rome, but cannot find the way to tell Dido. Dido discovers that Aeneas chooses to exchange love for the finding of Rome. Dido does not understand the necessity for Aeneas to leave. She desperately pleads with Aeneas, "Can our love not hold you / can the pledge we gave not hold you"(Aen 4.40). Dido is a ruined lover filled with rage, despair, guilt, humility, and shame. " Because of you, I lost my integrity / And that admired name by which alone I made my way once toward the stars. / To whom / Do you abandon me, a dying woman" (Aen 4.440-444). Aeneas tells Dido that it is the gods will that he leave her. " As for myself, be sure / I never shall deny all you can say, / Your majesty, of what you meant to me. / Never will the memory of Elissa / stale for me, while I can remember / My own life, and the spirit rules my body" (Aen 4.45-464). She commits suicide because she feels abandoned and worthless. She has lost all self-respect and no one can live without self-respect. Dido's love was nothing but a dependence, need, and unwillingness to let go.

Both of these women, though abandoned by the men they love show a different reaction to love and their willingness to let them go. Both women keep the men they love with them for one year. Both women allow strangers to stay with them by showing their hospitality. Circe shows her reaction to love for Odysseus by helping him return to Ithaca while Dido's reaction to love makes her lose sight of what she cannot control. Circe is a very complex and controlling woman but one who knows when to let go in a hopeless loving situation. Dido is a very generous, kind, and powerful woman who is destined to lead her city and people to greatness until Aeneas comes into her life. Then she is reduced to an obsessed, emotional, uncontrollable lover - an angry and bitter woman. She has given herself completely to Aeneas, but could not keep her lover from leaving. This shows how two powerful women differ in the reaction of love and letting go. Love is not a reaction of someone's obsession. It is not a sexual desire or need for someone. When the will to love is gone, a person has the will to let go. This is done without thinking of taking desperate means as the suicide of Dido. It is done without guilt or revenge, but to allow her lover to leave willingly as Circe does.

The protagonists in each story are trapped in a world of ignorance(ÎÞÖª) because each is comfortable in the dark, and fearful of what knowledge a light might bring. They are reluctant to venture£¨Ã°ÏÕ£ into unfamiliar territory. Fortunately the narrator in the Cathedral is forced by circumstances to take a risk. This risk leads him into new world of insight and understanding. The narrator in ¡°The Cathedral¡± begins the story with the issue of hesitation in seeing the light. The light in this story represents reality. The narrator expresses the fear of expressing reality when he said ¡° I wasn¡¯t enthusiastic about his visit. He was no one I knew. And his being blind bothered me. My idea of blindness came from the movies. In the movies, the blind moved slowly and never laughed. Sometimes they were led by seeing eye-dogs. A blind man in my house was not something I look forward to¡±. (Page 8). The narrator felt that being blind was like being in a type of prison and the preconceived notion of self-imprisonment was frightening to him. He felt that blindness was exactly like being a prisoner, a terrible world where no light ever penetrated. Unfortunately, the husband is imprisoned in his own ignorance. His view of blindness had come from Hollywood¡¯s portrayal of blind people. As far as he is concerned, his situation is completely normal. He knows there are lots of people just like him. In ¡°The Cathedral¡± the extent of the husband¡¯s ignorance or naivet? is extremely irritating. When his wife tells him the beautiful story of the blind man¡¯s romantic relationship with his wife Beulah, all he could think of is ¡° What a pitiful life this woman must have led. Imagine a woman who could never see herself as she was seen in the eyes of her loved one. A woman who could on day after day and never see the smallest compliment from her beloved. A woman whose husband could never read the expression on her face, be it misery or something better¡±. (Page 100). But the blind man had sight in the form of intuitiveness£¨Ö±¾õ£. This sight gave him greater vision than the sighted man. The blind man had a sense of and source of reality in the truth and strength of the relationship. This man was unlike the prisoners in the prison. The humans in the cave had no such reality. No love warmth or human contact. The prisoners in the cave had no knowledge of those things. For these people their ¡°cave life¡± and their ignorance created a world worse than the blind man¡¯s. The prisoners do not know where this road will lead them. In Carver¡¯s ¡°Cathedral¡±, the narrator did not realize that the blind man was in his ¡°causeway¡± out of ignorance. He did not realize that the simple act of his wife inviting the blind guest would lead to major new discoveries about himself and his ignorance. The narrator¡¯s wife has been exposed to knowledge, which is what Robert represents in this story, for many years. She was more aware of the world because of her relationship with Robert. This exposure was instrumental in presenting her husband with a learning opportunity. Her husband was given the opportunity to see the light. This was territory into which he would have never ventured on his own. His fears from his own cave prevented such risky behavior. This was opportunity for him to learn, grow, and develop in a myriad of ways. He would gain in his relationship with his wife. He would gain new insights about himself, and most of all he would gain knowledge that would pull him out of his own cave. The narrator saw the blind man ¡°drink¡± and ¡®smoke cigarette down to the nubbin¡±. He saw the blind man ¡°enjoy dope and whiskey¡¯. These glimpses of reality opened his life as he made discoveries that risk enhanced his life-risk did not detract from it. In Carver¡¯s Cathedral, the narrator is enlightened by Robert¡¯s capabilities ¡°We sat down at the table for dinner. We dug in. We ate everything there was to eat on the table. We ate like there was no tomorrow. We didn¡¯t talk. We ate. We scarfed. We grazed that table. We were into serious eating. The blind man had right away located his foods; he knew just where everything was on his plate. I watched with admiration as he used his knife and fork on the meat. He¡¯d cut two pieces of meat, fork the meat into his mouth, and then go all out for the scalloped potatoes, the beans next, and then he¡¯d tear off a hunk of buttered bread and eat that. He¡¯d follow this up with a big drink of milk. It didn¡¯t seem to bother him to use his fingers once in a while, either¡¯. (Page 10). Curiously, the final insight for the husband comes when he closes his eyes in order to imagine and draw the cathedral. ¡±Close your eyes now, the blind man said to me. I did it. I closed them just like he said. Are they closed? He said. Don¡¯t fudge. They are closed, I said. Keep them that way, he said. He said, don¡¯t stop now. Draw. So we kept on with it. His fingers rode my fingers as my hand went over the paper. It was nothing else in my life up to now. Then he said, I think that¡¯s it. I think you got it, he said. Take a look. What do you think? But I had my eyes closed. I thought I would keep them that way for a little longer. I thought it was something I ought to do. Well, he said. Are you looking? My eyes were still closed. I was in my house. I knew that. But, I didn¡¯t feel like I was inside anything. It¡¯s really something I said¡±. (Page 108). By becoming blind he sees clearly how the blind man¡¯s world really is. Being temporarily £¨ÁÙʱµÄ£blind opens his eyes to the world around him. He can understand the disability, with understanding comes compassion, and the compassion has caused him to develop new insight into the world around him. Interaction with the blind man has allowed him to see, and has removed him from his own personal cave.

When people lose important parts of their lives they must shed all their layers and rebuild themselves from the inside out, before they can continue with their life. In Wendy Orr's novel Peeling the Onion, Anna Duncan shows incredible strength and mentality despite losing many of her hopes and dreams. Although the accident brought great pain and sadness to Anna, her family and friends, it also brought great joy and elation.

Throughout the novel Anna loses a lot of her physical aspects due to the accident. Not only did she suffer through a broken neck, smashed thumb and sprained ankle, she also had to face the reality of never being able to do karate again. Anna's life revolved around karate and it was where she first met Hayden, whom she thought was the man of her dreams. She loved karate so much that she even had a full-length punching bag in the carport but with her injuries she was no longer able to use it. "I must be in a mood to torture myself. After my punching bag I put on a video of our Christmas karate demonstration," p 7. She loved winning, loved knowing that she was the best but when they accident happened she lost that feeling and almost gave up hope. "...It's just I liked the competition in karate; I really liked knowing I was best; winning." P 156.

Along with the disappointment of karate she also learnt that she would probably never walk properly without the aid of a walking stick. "Bonus! Two arthritic ankles instead of one!" p 100. Although most of the injuries were recognised early, certain injuries were not revealed until later on in the novel such as her slight brain damage. Whilst the brain damage was not life threatening it still hindered Anna's recovery because of the constant dizzy spells and the inability to stand and close her eyes at the same time. With all the pain caused by her injuries came frustration. She was unable to channel her rage and anger because she could not hit or kick things so she had to bottle up all her emotions. "So what so I do with my rage, now that I can't hit anything? Now that I can't do anything?" p 7.

While it is visible to see Anna's physical scars what is hidden underneath her brave mask is far worse than any injury she ever had to face. Anna is affected emotionally and almost loses her hopes and dreams. She dreamt that she would get her black belt in karate, go cycling around Holland and become a P.E teacher but with all the injuries and broken bones her dreams were soon washed away and she found herself helpless and lonely. She also found it difficult to cope with all the thoughts that kept floating into her mind and at one stage in her recovery she found it almost unbearable to continue the way she was. "... A talisman to touch when life was unbearable, that secret plan the escape route...with no way out the pain is infinite…" p1. Along with all the physical pain comes the emotional stress and trauma. Anna has trouble coping with the pressure she is placing upon herself to get better. She has trouble understanding that she is not going to get better with the click of her fingers but most of all she is afraid. Afraid of what she will or wont find once all her layers have been taken away "Can't tell her how scared, how terrified I am that if somebody gets right into my head, pokes around and tears it apart, it might never come back together again." P 14. She is scared that there will be nothing left of her if she opens up and lets her thoughts flow freely. "You think talking to some one is going to make me feel better about his? My body's wrecked, my life's screw I am NOT going to see a psychologist!" p 116. At crucial times in peoples lives friends should be around to help, not turn their backs but in Anna's case that exactly what happened. Caroline, one of Anna's best friends, found it too hard to cope with Anna's injuries so instead of trying to work things out she just left Anna on her own when she was at her lowest point. Luckily Jenny was there for Anna and it was with Jenny's help that she finally gave in to her injuries and stopped fighting.

Not everything has to end in tragedy, Anna may have lost almost everything from her mind to her body but along the way she has gained strengths both physically and mentally. She has gained more from this one experience than she would of in her whole life. She has become a stronger person and knows that if anything happened like this again that she would be able to cope. "And I am going to do more than survive I'm starting to live!" p 164. She knows that there is still a long way to go until she has fully recovered but she is now willing to wait. Her near death experience has showed her how lucky she really is and that every day is a new and wonderful blessing. Her experience has showed her how a disabled person lives and she is now grateful that she has recovered even though it took longer than she had imagined it would. Anna may not have gained anything physically because her legs are still sore and her balance is slightly off but she is just glad to be able to do ordinary things and enjoy life. "I know I'm lucky after all, because no matter what the doctors say, I'll never give up trying and hoping..." p 147. What didn't kill Anna only made her stronger because she was able to face her biggest fear, Trevor Jones. It took a lot of courage for Anna to face Trevor after everything he put her and her family through. One of the major events in the novel was when Anna broke up with Hayden; this paved the way for Anna and Luke's romance. If it had not of been for Anna's accident Luke would never have met her and Anna would be with Hayden for all the wrong reasons. "I guess you've got your reasons for wanting to be with me, but it's not love." P 140. Luke was the best thing that came out of the accident because he helped her believe that she could get through everything and with his help she shed her layers and reviled the real Anna. "...But under all the layers a tiny green shoot sprouting Im growing from inside." P 166.

The worst part of Anna's life is over, she has made it through the toughest period of her life and can now look forward to a better future with the knowledge she is has gained from her journey. With Luke and her family by her side Anna will be able to move on knowing who she really is. Anna could never have rebuilt her life without the help of everyone around her and without Trevor she would never have found the real ‘Anna' nor would she have the mental strength she now has.

The way never to lose someone is never to forget that they love you, and will always be there. Have you ever left for school in the morning without saying good-bye to the people you love? I was having the best summer of my life. My grandfather and I had just got back from a week in Main. Every morning before dawn, we took long walks along the water's edge. He and I had a special relationship, he wasn't like a grandfather; he was the friend that longed for. He was the little voice inside my head that told me what to do and what not to do. On special occasions, my grandfather and I would walk down to Mc. Donald's and order a chocolate shake and French fries; it was something that only the two of did. We would talk about everything. That was the best thing about him. No matter what was going on in his life, he always had time for you. If he had a bad day, he would still listen to you because that was his way of doing things. Just like any teenager gets into with their parents. He came into my room and said that he was going to class and that he would be back later, and that we would talk. It was around nine at night, Jen's mom had just put my baby brother to bed, when the phone rang again. This time however it was different. When Jen's mom got off, she told me to go get my brother out of bed, we were going for a drive. We all piled into the little red mini van and were off. In the back seat, Jen and I were laughing that we had to go somewhere in our pajamas. The trip was short, maybe a little too short, for we stopped in the Emergency parking lot of the Chenango Memorial Hospital.

When we got out of the van, Jen and I looked at each other, stunned and confused. My mind was racing around, like it was the Daytona 500. Was someone hurt or did Jen's mom work here? I became more confused when I saw my mother crying on the bench. Her face was pale; there was no expression on her face. It was as if she was dead. He had had a massive heart attack during his practice at class, and that there was nothing that could be done. I didn't want to believe this, but who would? The horror that struck threw my body was taking over my mind. His face was cold, pale, and stiff. His smile was gone, along with the life he had in him. It was then that it all hit me. He really was gone, never to return.

The next few weeks were all a blur. Signing for packages that we coming in by the dozens. Comforting my emotionally wrecked grandmother, and trying to cope myself. Hercules, the Latin and English form of Heracles (or Herakles), the name of a national hero of ancient Greece. He was honored for his physical strength, bravery, and endurance in performing a series of arduous labors, and he was invoked as a god in Greece at least as early as the late 6th century B.C. His cult was probably the earliest nonindigenous cult accepted in Rome.

Hercules was the child of Zeus and Alcmene, the wife of Amphitryon, king of Tiryns and a descendant of Perseus. Zeus had promised the rule of Argos to the next born of this line. Eliot Asinof, in his book, "Eight Men Out," explores the complexities of the 11 World Series. The rough and tough world of professional baseball in the early twentieth century was replete with violence, debauchery and gambling. Baseball players of that day were known to be an uneducated lot, stinking of whiskey and not to be trusted. There were some exceptional players that were educated and mannerly, but by in large, the public perception of these men of sport was one of villainy and corruption.

Although many ballparks (such as Comisky's own park) claimed to outlaw gambling during the games, betting was as plentiful and easy to find as hotdogs and crackerjack. The Great War had just ended and financial pressures were still being felt. Gambling seemed to be an easy way to make some extra cash. The men who played baseball for the Chicago White Sox were no different. Although worshipped as heroes, players were often paid less then wages for more menial task requiring little or no talent. The average player for the 11 White Sox made $6000 per year. Charles Comisky, the team's owner took full advantage of the reserve clause in his players' contracts to maximize his own personal income and keep the players that brought in that income in squalor.

The question becomes did the nature of these players determine the manipulated outcome of the 11 World Series, or were there other factors at work? Asinof's book dives into the many contributing factors to the national scandal that still mystifies and intrigues baseball fans today. Were the players solely to blame? Was it the influence of the gamblers that spurred the teammates to throw the series? Was it Charles Comisky's fault? All of these issues are addressed in Asinof's work.

Asinof has stated that he "came [to this story] with the attitude that these eight guys tried to ruin the game of baseball. It shocked my senses to realize that this situation was much more complicated." Or was it more simple? Perhaps it wasn't the demonic intent of ruining baseball was on the players' minds when they entertained giving away a World Series title that they could have easily won. Possibly the simple pressure of not making enough money was at the root of the scandal.

Working for Charlie Comisky was known famously as legalized slave labor. Comisky was raking in more that $500,000 in a year when his highest paid player might make only $16,000. Truly his entrepreneurial spirit and keen business insight allowed him to capitalize on the game of baseball. Comisky offered fans attending his park a complete experience that included many of the luxuries still found in today's modern ballparks. But at the heart of each baseball fan was the desire to see the game and their favorite players. Without those players, Comisky would have nothing to offer. His state of the art park with all its lavish furnishings and amenities would be sadly empty without the heroics of his White Sox players. Perhaps Comisky's hard-nosed economics and refusal to remunerate his players for their abilities makes the "Old Roman" the most serious villain of "Eight Men Out."

Of course organized gambling is given its share of the blame in

Asinof's book. Heavy hitters like Arnold Rothstein were at the heart of the baseball scandal. Rothstein was known as a "sportsman" by the media and the public. One of the biggest gamblers of the day, Rothstein was loaded with cash and eventually became the financier of both Abe Attell's and Sport Sullivan's dealings with the White Sox players. Rothstein cared nothing for the game of baseball. It was simply another venue where he could make money and control the outcome of illegal activity. Rothstein was a businessman. His underground dealings and profit-motivated ruthlessness may have paved the way for the organized crime that swept major cities in years to come. After the World Series scam (where Rothstein is said to have profited more than $50,000) he moved on to drug dealing and other lucrative forms of crime.

"Sport" Sullivan was familiar with the White Sox and particularly Chick Gandil. Gandil had, in the past, alerted Sullivan to game day situations that could prove pivotal to an outcome. Sullivan was a smaller scale gambler than Rothstein. Although he was always ready for a money making scheme, Sullivan was actually approached by Gandil. Sullivan did not entice the players to enter into the confederacy of plotters. Gandil was the man who accomplished this. So perhaps Sullivan, though on the illegal side of things, is less to blame for the Black Sox than one of their own, Chick Gandil.

Gandil had a rough reputation and was nearing the end of his career. He was not as educated and business savvy as other players on the White Sox team. Although he had tenure and a moderate amount of fame, his annual salary was almost $10,000 less than some of his teammates. Perhaps this idea was his alone. After all, it was Gandil that approached Sullivan concerning the deal, and Gandil that recruited the other seven players on the team to take part in throwing the games. Arnold Gandil is one of the most responsible elements for the scandal surrounding the 11 World Series.

Although many forces and factors were at work, Asinof's book, "Eight Men Out," delivers clear responsibility in no certain direction. What happened to the players and fans of the 11 season is a national tragedy. The reputation of baseball and all major league sports was damaged by selfish actions that revolved around money. Principle and character are hard to find in this story. Buck Weaver and Joe Jackson are portrayed as unwilling participants, but still did nothing to stop the fixing of the series. Sadly, it would appear that money was at heart of the scandal. As is often the case, financial pressure motivated men to act in ways that were less than honorable. The culprit is money and the emphasis and importance placed on it by society. The victim is baseball.

What is the matrix? As stated by Morpheus in the early parts of this movie, "The matrix is a computer animated dream world pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth." While to the majority of audiences that are oblivious to the underlying symbolism throughout the movie, they just see it as just another mind blowing action packed film. However to that minority who are able to see past the blown up Hollywood hype can really relate to the true meaning of this movie. The two biggest questions it asks the audience in my opinion are that of reality and existence. When in the loading program Neo states "This is real", he is quickly replied to by Morpheus who quotes "what is real? What defines real? If real is something that you can see, hear, smell or taste then real is simply just electrical impulses interpreted by your brain." At the present point in time this statement seems a little far fetched, however if we continue to seek new virtual reality technology at the rate that we are, then I believe in a few decades time this statement will become widely accepted throughout scientific communities.

Existence is the other philosophical aspect that this movie questions in quite detail. If we lived inside the matrix we would infact be living a lie. And once removed from the matrix our minds would have to face the harsh reality that everything we owned, everything we did and everything we prided ourselves on were just dreams, made realistic by a computer program. This harsh "withdrawal" from the known "truth" is seen by Neo in two parts of the film, the first time it is occurred is when he comes out of the loading program and slurs the words "I don't believe, I won't believe it, let me out." This sense of "withdrawal" is also seen when Neo is in the car going to matrix and Neo says "I have these memories from my previous life, none of them happened"

The first scene establishes to the audience that the matrix is more than just some gun shots and a few fights. In this first scene we are introduced to a series of characters. We meet this sly talking devious character that goes by the name Cypher, in only the first few moments we are already aware that he is not to be trusted, as he symbolizes the Judas in this film. We then hear the voice of Morpheus, a mysterious, "all knowing" and "father like" figure that symbolizes God. Like a father he informs Trinity about the agents, and in a demanding deep tone he reprimands her "you have to focus Trinity," and "You can make it!" he then commands her to "Go!" Trinity, the superhuman fighter with equally super jumping skills that can be symbolized by the Holy Spirit is the next character that the audience is introduced to. Finally we are confronted by the ones they call "agents"; these agents possess superhuman strength, extreme agility and the same jumping skills that Trinity possesses, in biblical terms these agents symbolize demons.

The Wachowski brothers have used these agents to give of a sense of authority to the viewers; they have achieved this notion of authority by making them look like a CIA agent. Later in the movie we find out really how much control these agents have, being plugged into the matrix means that these agents are able to inflict mutilating torture with just a word. This ability to inflict mutilation is seen when agent Smith asks the question "what good's a phone call Mr. Anderson, when you can't speak?" We also find out that these agents have the ability to "tap" into any phone conversation and also "possess the body of any one still plugged into the matrix.

We do not meet "the one" in the first scene, however we hear his name referred to by the agents as "Neo". Right from the start we see Neo symbolic to a saviour or messiah type character. In the early parts of the film the Wachowski brothers use dialogue to illustrate this connection between Neo and the saviour Jesus Christ. When the audience is first introduced to Neo he has been woken up by a group of lower class people that are purchasing a computer disk. The dialogue explained before was a key point in this scene is when the man buying the disk states "Hallelujah! You're my saviour man! My own personal Jesus Christ" Immediately the connection between Neo and Jesus is set into the minds of the audience.

Throughout the movie the audience is exposed to many colours that have been used to express mood and feelings. Before Neo has been "unplugged" from the matrix, the scenes are filmed with a distinct green tint. I believe the Wachowski brothers have used this colour to portray a sense of conspiracy, it makes the audience believe that there's something bigger out there but they are yet to find out what it is. When people know little about a subject they are said to be "green on the subject". This is main reason for this green tint, no one inside the matrix knows about the matrix, not even Neo, they might have thoughts, visions or dreams of an outside world, however their brains interpret these "visions" as ludicrous and impossible so the brain simply brushes them aside and continues on with life.

The other colour that I have chosen to analyze from this film is the colour black. I have chosen this second colour for the obvious reason that almost every scene in the movie has some amount of black in it. So why did the Wachowski brothers choose to use this colour? It is said that someone that wears the colour black is powered by an inner strength or truth. This relates to Morpheus, he is powered by the fact that he knows that Neo is "the one" and the saviour of mankind. Black is also the colour of mystery and is closely related to secrecy, we can link this to the first scene with Trinity, she is dressed predominately in black, and for this reason we don't know whether she'll be the hero or the villain in the film. The colour black can also symbolize fear and anxiety, we can connect this notion of fear and anxiety to all characters that have been "unplugged" from the matrix, they are always incredibly fearful about going into the matrix and are more than anxious to get out of it.

The Matrix questions everything that we as human perceive as the "truth". To those viewers that can see past the action it is these philosophical questions that make this film such a pleasure to watch. The Wachowski brothers have achieved this by using a wide variety of symbolism, they have kept the audience gripped with interest with excellent action scenes, as well as planting very thoughtful philosophical question underneath this mind blowing action, to make a very worthwhile film.

In 1781, the French scientist Coulomb (176-1806) announced his friction law clarifying the scientific characteristics of friction.

With regard to the friction that operates between two sliding solids (dry surfaces), the following Laws are in effect.

1) Friction is proportional to the load pressing the solids together and almost independent of the area of contact.

) Kinetic friction is independent of the speed at which the solids are sliding.

) The force require to overcome static friction is always greater than the force to overcome kinetic friction. (to sustain motion)

Coulomb not only verified the inverse-square force between electric charges and measured them absolutely, but also established the Laws of Friction. Coulomb's main result was that the force preventing two solids with plane faces in contact from sliding was independent of area of contact, but proportional to the normal force pressing the two solids together. The ratio of the frictional force to the normal force is called the Coefficient of friction, m = F/N

Frictional forces that obey these rules are called Coulomb friction. The normal force is the force applied that is perpendicular to the surface of contact. The Coefficient is a unitless quantity that must be measured by experimenting with different materials and different normal forces. There are different coefficients for every pair of materials.

The Area Block is placed on the slideway loaded with mass. Different amounts of weight were used to carry out this experiment.

The coefficient of friction doesn't effect the area of contact because returning to the equations for friction, F = m N, that friction only depends on weight of the object being moved and the coefficient of friction that exists between the two surfaces. The coefficients of friction do not depend upon the area of the surfaces in contact.

Conclusion

Friction is a force like any other and affects motion. Friction acts on materials that are in contact with each other, and it always acts in a direction to oppose motion. When two solids come into contact, the friction is mainly due to irregularities in the two surfaces. After reviewing the guidelines of the Gallery Review project I knew that just going to any museum or gallery would not get the job done. I understood that I would have to sit down and prepare a plan as to where I would visit. I was able to see different styles of art from all different parts of the world. There were pieces of art that told a story, pieces of art that showed expressions, pieces of art that described a certain place or thing, and there were pieces that did not have any type of direct structure; as to the meaning; but, it had a purpose. Art has a way of never repeating sure there are duplicates of art work but, there is only one original. When I started this journey art meant, boring, pictures of old stuff. I had formulated a stereotype of what art was. Consequently this leads me to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC.

My first art exhibit was "Young America" on display at the American Art Museum. "Young America" a few words popped into my head when I thought of this topic. "Caucasian people, American flags, war, presidents, etc. But I was wrong; once I began to walk around I saw things that proved my earlier perceptions wrong

"Boy playing Marbles" (1858 David Gilmour Blythe) The Young America exhibit, displayed art that grabbed my eye. This portrait composed with oil during 1858 illustrates a vagabond the young male has torn ragged clothing which suggests he has little or no parental guidance. I particularly liked this painting because it showed youthfulness and just how easily children are entertained. This is seemingly amusing to young adults and many older adults when you start to think about the fact that we are entertained however not in that way.

As I moved towards the middle of the room I noticed to my right I saw peaceful and scenic sunset painting comprised of clouds and made with oil. This painting was so serene and peaceful once I began to read the caption I realized that I was wrong. The painting named "Aurora Borealis" (1865 Frederic Edwin Church) which was inspired by the last phase of Civil War. Now war is not peaceful and serene it is violent noisy, and bloody. Likewise this painting shows that art can be misleading in many ways. You think you can judge a painting by just looking at it but you may need to read the captions to understand the essence of the painting. My visit at this museum has made me want to view some art in the form of a sculpture or at least something that expressed elements of my culture so I traveled to another museum same location Washington DC's Smithsonian but just another building.

While on my way to the National Gallery of Art I seen beautiful people and playful children and I thought that is a form of art right there. While walking into the National Gallery of Art there were many different sections and galleries to visit. Out of the many rooms, I chose to visit the room that displayed sculptures. I love sculptures they are life like figures. You can actually visualize them walking beside you in the street or sitting behind you while your in class. There were many sculptures but only two caught my eye. Over in this grim little corner sat a very small sculpture called "Rosita" sculpted by Artistide Mailld (180/18 Terracotta).

The "Rosita" sculpture is so petite in size compared to the sculpture that stands directly across the room. The Roman sculpture that I see in my eyes reminds me of something that I have read about in a book. "The Age of Bronze" artist Auguste Rodin (188 Plaster) with the help of the Director well she maybe wasn't the director of the building she was still helpful. Ms. Reid explained to me that the artist struggled for a year and a half to finish this sculpture the sculpture is actually him. He wanted to make something people could remember him by. These sculptures help me to digest and distinguish between the many different forms if art. To stay on track I went to one more museum that museum is apart of the Smithsonian Institute but isn't in the same location as the other museums.

I had to hop on a train and then walk a couple of blocks but I was in good company so I didn't mind. I ended up in The Anacostia Museum & Center for African American History and Culture. By the title alone I was anticipating to see beautiful black paintings, African cloths and so much more. But was I wrong, the museum is more of a culture center more so than a exhibit area. I viewed many things like photos and actual pictures that were made by the community's children. I asked a worker where the exhibits were and she informed me that, what I was looking at actually was an exhibit. I thought this was the best exhibit simply because it shows that as African American people have such beautiful talents and to display. After such a beautiful visit at the Smithsonian I decided to visit a museum in Charlotte, NC this is where my journey ended at the Mint Museum.

The Mint Museum many displayed things that you can touch and things that you can not touch. My favorite piece of work that is always on exhibit was the "Bamboo Bench" (1 Judy Kersley Mc Kie cast bronze) I loved that piece because it was something I could sit on. The other piece that I loved was Michael Lucero's "American Cohasset" (10 made of white earth ware, glazes and steel gift) this piece caught my attention because it was a city and all the things that made a city. All the museums offered something different and they all showed that ART is in fact everything.

My journey opened my eyes and expanded my vision so much. With the help of the workers I learned that art is what you make it and it is in fact all around us.

Susan B. Anthony was an influential leader of her time. She was not only a leader, she was also a fighter. Not only did she use her organizational abilities and energy to the fight for women's suffrage; she brought along her strong determination. Susan B. Anthony used her determination and helped fight for the abolition of slavery (Lind). Because of Anthony's strong will, American women now have the right to vote and slaver has been abolished.

Anthony was born into a reform-minded Quaker family in Adams, Massachusetts. Her first leadership position came in 1846, when she became the head of the female department at Canajoharie Academy. While there, she was active in the temperance movement. She made her first public speech as the president of the local Daughters of Temperance at the Academy (Sigerman 7).

In 1851, Anthony met Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who would become a long time friend. Stanton urged Anthony to join the women's rights movement, a movement that was just starting throughout the troubled young nation. Although

Anthony hesitated at first, she soon found herself in situation that made her want to take part in the movement. While at the Sons of Temperance meeting, Anthony was not allowed permission to make a speech she had prepared. The other delegates and Anthony walked out and founded their own Woman's State Temperance Society of New York. This organization advocated women's rights (Barry ). Anthony campaigned for a change in New York's laws regarding married women's property rights. Anthony also served as chief New York agent of Garrison's American Anti-Slavery Society. During the early part of the Civil War, she helped organize the Women's National Loyal League, which campaigned for freedom. She not only worked endlessly for women's rights and emancipation, but she worked to keep equal pay for working women (teachers in particular) (Milton05).

Many people feared the agenda that Anthony and her friends were fighting for. Some liquor consumers thought that if women were allowed to vote, they would vote in favor of prohibition. Businesses feared that women would feel empowered and would demand higher salary and better working conditions. Other believed that women would simply lose their beauty and charm. Through all the negative opposition Anthony faced, she continued to advocate what she believed was right. "Men their rights and nothing more, women their rights and nothing less," were words spoken by Anthony that sum up her and other suffragists goal (Webster 166).

After the war, Anthony unsuccessfully campaigned to have the language of the Fourteenth amendment changed to allow women and "Negro" suffrage. IN 1866, she became secretary of a new group called the American Equal Rights Association. This organization called for not only women's suffrage, but also African American suffrage. Many abolitionists thought women should wait until African American men had won the right to vote. Again despite negative feedback, Anthony continued to campaign. IN 1867, she spoke and organized a tour of Kansas. Unfortunately all her work failed to win passage of a state enfranchisement law (Lind). While in Kansas, Stanton and Anthony found support from a Democrat named George Train. Train offered to finance a women suffrage paper (Barry 4). This was considered a great advantage and a big step toward gaining women's rights. The paper Anthony and other suffragists created was called The Revolution. The Revolution had articles on labor problems and trade unions. Not only that, it had campaigns against the 15th amendment, which gave African Americans the right to vote, but not white women. (Rood 14).

Anthony and Stanton formed the National Woman Suffrage Association, also called the NWSA, in 186. This organization worked to gain a 16th amendment, a major law to give women the right to vote. Not all women agreed with the view of the NWSA. Lucy Stone, part of a rival national suffrage organization, formed the American Woman Suffrage Association. This group opposed a federal suffrage amendment, and favored the women's suffrage issue being a state approach. The NWSA was the more dominant group with Anthony being its spokesperson (Sigerman 8).

Anthony devoted her life to fighting for the cause of women's suffrage. She not only worked for a federal amendment, but also took part in many state campaigns.
