In To His Coy Mistress, Andrew Marvell presents a speaker who appeals to his love through persuasion using an appeal to reason as his main tool. By using different methods of appeal, the speaker hopes to win his mistress love. From the title, one can see that the speaker is a man addressing a female. The use of the word coy shows the reader that this woman is shy but in an enticing way, she is almost intentionally leading him on.

The overall scheme of this poem follows an appeal to reason, as proven by the first lines of each of the three stanzas. The poem begins with, Had we but world enough and time, which sets up an argument in which the speaker says what he would do if time permitted. It continues in the second stanza with the first word, But, which indicates a problem with the speakers initial thoughts. The But begins a stanza in which the speaker introduces the idea that one does not live forever. There isn't enough time to court because death is near and then passion will have been wasted. However, by starting the final stanza with, Now therefore, the speaker gives a solution to the problem he raised in the previous stanza. The method by which one introduces an idea, finds a flaw in it, and then finds a solution to the problem follows a chain of logic and appeals to a persons reason.

In the first stanza, the speaker adopts a tone of praise and affection. He professes his love for his mistress by saying he would love her from times beginning to times end (7-10). The speakers love should grow vaster than empires (11-1) and he would adore her for thousands of years (1-18). He compliments his mistress beauty and soul by saying that she deserves thousands of years of praise for her body and heart (1-0). He professes his adoration by telling her that his love spans from the beginning of time, before the Flood (8), to the end of time, Till the conversion of the Jews (10). His praise is not altogether sincere because although he pretends to want her for who she is, he just wants her body. His flattery is, in my opinion, an exaggeration.

In the second stanza, the speaker's tone is darker and less flattering and he uses images associated with death like marble vault, worms, dust, ashes, and graves. These words serve to emphasize the point that one will inevitably die and serve to perhaps frighten the mistress. He tries to make the point that only through death, which gets closer every second "Time's winged chariot hurrying near", will his love disappear and that only the worms will enjoy his mistress (7) company when she dies.

In the third stanza he offers a plan by which the two should live, knowing that one does not live forever. The speaker wants to live with his mistress while they are still youthful (-4) and passionate like amorous birds of prey (8). He wants the two of them to make the most of their lives together (4-46) and refusal of his love does not make sense because their passion will mean nothing in death, a logical reason. In the final stanza, the speakers tone changes again. This time the man speaks with a rushed tone, as though attempting to get in a final argument before time runs out, or death catches him. The main indication of this rushed tone lies in the punctuation, which is very scarce. Also, the third stanza contains words associated with action and motion, like transpires, fires, sport, devour, power, strength, and run. This echoes the fact that he feels they must take action with their romance.

In conclusion, Marvells poem incorporates the three appeals by creating a situation where a man attempts to persuade his mistress into spending her life with him. Overall, the speaker appeals to reason by loving each other, they may not stop time and live forever as lovers, but they can make it seem that way by filling their lives with love and happiness.

Opt-in or Opt-out

If you order your custom term paper from our custom writing service you will receive a perfectly written assignment on Opt-in or Opt-out. What we need from you is to provide us with your detailed paper instructions for our experienced writers to follow all of your specific writing requirements. "Opt-in or Opt-out" these are the new catch phrases in the world of Internet and consumer privacy. Modern technology is a wonderful tool that continues to revolutionize day-to-day business. However, for all of the good technology delivers, some are always poised to take advantage at any cost. Irresponsible and unethical marketing has now spread to the Internet with a vengeance!

The smart business owner knows the value of his or her list of customers. Advertising to your existing customer base has long been a staple of marketing. However creating new interest from "potential" customers has been a difficult task. Direct mail, for years, has been the low cost way to reach new customers in your local, statewide, or national market. But with the advent of the Internet, junk mail has taken on a new repulsive look. Today we surf the Internet at light speed. Eventually, we stop at friendly and (unbeknownst to us) inhospitable web sites. Most reputable companies ask you for your demographic data. They explain in detail why they are asking for your information and give explicit directions on how not to "Opt-in" to or "Opt-out" of their website if you are uncomfortable. The majority of these companies would like an easy way to track your consumer tendencies as they relate to how you purchase with them. With this data, they study it compared to others in their database that have given them similar permission. They will then send you electronic mail, which is cheaper than regular mail, with advertisements and specials.

In direct contrast, we also have the unscrupulous deviants who use technology to place small information parasites on your computer system. These parasites are called "cookies." Cookies are small pieces of code that can be transferred to your personal computer just by visiting a particular website. These micro-applications can be constructed to do simple tasks like return the user to the website easily. Others are equipped to return all of your personal information back to cyber-thieves who then seek to destroy your files, computer, and at times your life. In Europe, the countries have created a commission that governs how they obtain information from computer users. However, in America, we continue to let people misuse private citizens' personal data in the name of advertising and marketing.

Many companies are trying to police themselves by offering consumers the ability to opt-in or out of their website. Most often, the procedure to opt-out involves clicking a link on the advertisement sent through email. The link then redirects the users browser to a place where their name is deleted or marked for deletion from the database. The unsavory web marketing directors are probably hiding behind the fact that if you have done business with, inquired about, or visited a website you qualify as a customer. Even opting-out of a website would count as a visit. They may not be able to send you advertisements from the site you opted-out of, however they could send you advertisements under another of its many other sites as having had a "relationship" with their company. Even more the evil cookies are always transmitting your Internet Protocol (IP) address and sending valuable information to companies without the users consent.

Conclusion

A huge part of marketing is catering to your existing customer base. The technological advances made in the last 5 to 10 years have made that task easier. Databases are far more advanced, the Internet has produced a low cost way to distribute ads and promotions, and cookies have made collecting information seamless. However, irresponsible and unethical marketers have taken these advances and used them in ways that have intruded on the very privacy of individuals. Because legislators are not savvy enough, the fear is that calling on our lawmakers to help will hamper progress because they are apt to swing the pendulum to far in an effort to quail the problem.

Analysis of The Iliad

Through the ages, many people wonder why something as terrible as a war has to happen. The human race is supposedly smarter than any other species, and yet, we have not yet developed the idea of problem solving. Elementary students are taught to discuss their problems, and not resort to fighting. How can an eight year old child understand this, when he sees violence on the news? Book Thirteen of The Iliad, tells of a battle scene involving Peisandros, Menelaos, Harpalion, and Meriones. It becomes obvious to readers that men on both the Achaian and the Trojan sides do not understand why they are fighting, do not understand why Zeus allows the war to happen and why the war is still going on.

The scene opens as Peisandros comes straight toward Menelaos, ready to attack him with his "beautiful axe with strong bronze blade". It is quite interesting that Homer mentions this axe, and especially in such detail. It seems to be Peisandros' finest possession. It is kind of ironic, because, he is in the middle of fighting with Menelaos, and all he can think about is his beautiful axe. Something so frivolous should not be of great concern when Peisandros is on the edge of life and death. In fact, Menelaos does kill Peisandros. Many soldiers during times of war are more concerned with what type of weapon they use than their reason for using the weapon. Despite what many may think, war is not meant to be enjoyable.

However, it seems that Menelaos believes the Trojans are thoroughly enjoying themselves and that they will never be fully satisfied with war. This is very frustrating to Menelaos. It is his understanding that the reason the Achaians are fighting is to get Helen back home to Sparta. This is the cause of the strength of the Achaian soldiers. He believes that the Trojan's are fighting purely out of "blind fury". Menelaos, therefore, cannot understand why war persists, when the Trojans have no clear cut reason to fight, other than the fact that they "cannot be glutted."

Menelaos also wonders why Zeus allowed things to get so carried away. He, in fact, questions Zeus' authority. "They say your wisdom passes all others',...and yet from you all this is accomplished." Later in the scene, after Menelaos' speech, a younger man named Harpalion comes out of nowhere and shoots an arrow at Menelaos' shield. His arrow does not get through the shield, and he goes to hide. Meriones, an Achaian, who had been lurking in the shadows, kills Harpalion. This may seem fairly normal, however, after re-reading the passage, most readers would sympathize with Harpalion. Harpalion recently followed his father into the fighting. So, he is not a very experienced solider, and more than likely he is not very old. His life ends with a single arrow, because of a cause he knows nothing about. After Harpalion dies, the "great-hearted Paphlagonians busied about him, lifted him into a chariot and brought him to sacred Ilion in sorrow, and his father weeping tears, walked beside him." Surely, these Trojan men were asking Zeus the same question as their enemy, the son of Atreus. Why, in all his wisdom and power, would Zeus allow this to happen?

Menelaos seems to believe that the reason the war is still going on is the fact that the Trojans will never tire of war. They are not afraid of Zeus, whom Menelaos believes is only a "guest god." However, it is quite interesting that Menelaos keeps referring to the length of the war as the fault of the Trojans, when the Achaians could just as easily give up on getting Helen back. If both sides have no reason to fight, then why fight at all? Many wars boil down to the fact that after an extended period of time, neither side really knows the reason for the fight.

Homer tells his modern readers that not much has changed since 100 BC. People still ask the same questions about war why they are fought, why the gods allow them to happen and why wars last so long. Because of this, people in todays culture can still learn from this ancient piece of literature, which for many reasons has survived the ages.

Christianity is one of the most largest and powerful religions in the world. It has three

main branches The Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy and Protestant. Each one

of the three branches has it's own thoughts of practicing religions which is how they

differ from one another, eventhough they are under the same umbralla of Christianity.

Protestants, as an example, their religion consists of numerous of churches, each church

have different practices and customes but overall there is no fundemental difference

within these churches. Roman Catholicism; on the other hand, dose not consist of

various churches with different thoughts or ideologies about their religion, actually they

all have the same mission and purpose. Comparing one to the other Roman Catholicism

and Protestants, we do see a majer difference in their own thoughts.

To be able to compare Protestant thoughts to Roman Catholicism we have to first

understand why the separation of church. Martin Luther was the man to first protest

about the Catholic Church, he did not agree on a lot of things the church did and started

to question and protest aginest some of the things they were doing, such as taking

communien, confession, contrubution to the church and baptizime at birth. Other

people also felt the same and agreed with Martin Luther and then came the war followed

by the reformation of the church. This is how Martin Luther then opened his own church

and became Protestant along with many other people.

One essential thought that differs from one religion to the other is the concept of

God. Protestant do not believe you have to go to a specific place to pray to God, on the

conterrie Protestants believe that you can be at any place at any time and still be able to

pray, talk to God and feel close to him. Catholics on the other hand; believe that you

must go to church at least once a week, to hear the word of God.

If you do not go then you are not complaying with one of their rules and you can be

excommunicated.

Another big difference we see between the two religions is the process of

confession. Protestants believe in justification by faith alone they alone with

God can repent and cleanse themselves without having to do it through someone else.

Catholics believe that to be apart of the church you should also confess yourself; it is

used as a cleansing process for your soul. Then based on your sins you are given a

number of prayers to pray and it is used as a punishment.

Catholics believe in baptizing newborns so that they can be saved, meaning if

they were to die they can go to heaven. Protestants on the other hand; give the parent the

option to wait until your child is older or an adult to be baptized. They understand that

when you are born you are too young to realize what you are doing and commiting too.

Catholics also believe in praying to saints and the Vergin Mary. Catholics also

use statues, candales and pictures of images as a symbole. None of these things are used

with the Protestant, they do not believe or use no such thing. They believe our attention

and devotion should only be given to one person and that is God. Protestants do respect

and acknowledge the saints and the Vergin Mary.

The Protestants and the Roman Catholicism as we may know have many

parallelisms between them, yet at the same time they share a great deal of differences in

thoughts. The Protestants main way of thinking is if we have our own self and we can

think for our own self, then do it, not letting any church influencing that thought of

thinking or acting of selfness. Protestant seem to be more practical when it comes to the

way of practicing religion. They deal more with the human life.

Catholics on the other hand expect you to go by their guid lines if not you don't belong,

They focus more on the spirt than on the soul. Catholics in my opinion want to run our

life and tell us how to live it.

Capital verses revenue

What we need from you is to provide us with your detailed paper instructions for our experienced writers to follow all of your specific writing requirements. Few topics in taxation have resulted in as much debate as that of the distinction between capital and revenue. Although South African fiscal legislation does make a distinction between gains and loss of a capital or revenue nature, it does not provide a definition of these terms. Thus it has been left to the judiciary, in the numerous cases brought before it, to lay down the principles governing what constitutes capital and revenue. This executive summary examines the relevance of this distinction between capital and revenue in South Africa and the uncertainty created by the vague and subjective nature of these terms.

There are two major schools of thought as to what constitutes taxable income. The ‘traditionalist approach' makes a distinction between gains and losses of a capital or revenue nature. Income is likened to the fruit of the tree while capital is viewed as the tree itself. Maritz J in CIR v Visser 17 TPD 77 explained that

‘if we take the economic meaning of capital and income, the one excludes the other. Income is what capital produces, or is something in the nature of interest or fruit as opposed to principal or tree'.

The ‘modernist approach', as opposed to the traditionalist one, takes a more comprehensive view of income. It defines income as all increases in the economic power of the taxpayer, whether exercised or not, to consume goods or services. As explained in Part 1 of the report of the Carter Commission (Canada 166),

‘a dollar gained through sale of a share, bond or piece of property bestows exactly the same economic power as a dollar gained through employment or operating a business'.

Thus using this approach, the distinction between capital and revenue becomes irrelevant.

The South African tax authorities, like their counterparts in many other countries, have adopted the traditionalist approach in differentiating between gains and loss of a capital or revenue nature. S 1 of the Income tax act exempts amounts from gross income if they are of a capital nature. Similarly S 11(a) disallows the deduction of expenditure and losses if they are of a capital nature. The recently inserted Eighth Schedule of the Income Tax Act sets out the distinct tax treatment of capital gains and losses. Thus the distinction between capital and revenue is relevant to South African tax law.

Despite the significance of this distinction, South African fiscal legislation provides no definition of what constitutes capital or revenue. Thus our courts have been forced to develop tests, in the many cases tried before them, to distinguish items of a capital and revenue nature. These tests include, inter alia considering the intention of the taxpayer, determining the length of time the asset was held by the taxpayer, examining the frequency of similar types of transaction and evaluating these aspects in the context of the taxpayer's business.

The judiciary has often found the application of these tests difficult due to their subjective nature. As Maritz J in the Visser case stated,

‘ for what is principal in the hands of one man may be interest in the hands of another. Law books in the hands of a lawyer are a capital asset; in the hands of a bookseller they are a trade asset. A farm owned by a farmer is a capital asset; in the hands of a land jobber it becomes stock-in-trade.'

Thus the commission of inquiry into the tax structure of the Republic of South Africa (the Margo commission) found that the criteria used to distinguish items of a capital and revenue nature are unsatisfactory.

Many people argued that the introduction of capital gains tax in South Africa would alleviate the problem. But as the Margo commission pointed out in their report, capital gains are taxed at different rates to revenue gains. Thus the distinction between capital and revenue is still relevant to South African tax legislation and taxpayers still require certainty in distinguishing between the two.

Objective criteria are needed in South Africa to give taxpayers and the judiciary guidance on how to differentiate between items of a capital and revenue nature. This would promote uniformity in the treatment of taxpayers and alleviate the unnecessary uncertainty of the current situation.

Politicians have a way with words, much like used car salesmen. They must win the respect of the public so they sugar coat their words and make empty promises that are rarely ever held true. In times of crisis or war, they are expected to confront the public and find the right way to deliver bad news. Their choice of words is important because the media, as well as the public, will carefully examine every single word that they use. The euphemisms that are chosen to are often used to avoid the true facts.

In the speeches in our textbook all of the speakers talked about war or conflict. President Roosevelt used the words "a date that will live in infamy" to show the significance of the attack by the Japanese on Pearl Harbor. Infamy means evil notoriety or reputation, or a disgraceful, publicly known act. I am sure that all Americans have thought those exact words on other occasions, like during the assassination of President Kennedy or after the attack on the World Trade Centers. Those dates are also days that we will never forget. When he spoke of retribution, he used the words "we will gain inevitable triumph" to affirm his faith that the United States would win that conflict with Japan.

During the speech of Winston Churchill after the invasion of Europe by Hitler, he referred to the attack as having "penetrated deeply" and called the enemy an "intruding wedge". He used numerous euphemisms in his speech indicating that a great deal of time and thought went into what he planned to say that day. He stated that he had "invincible confidence" that he and his people would win their war.

After the attack on the World Trade Centers on September 11, 001, President George Bush spoke to Congress about the "enemies of freedom" that attacked the United States. His choice of words is fairly, yet he uses phrases that would be better accepted if he were more straight-forward. He made the statement that he was not "deceived by their pretences to piety" instead of just saying hypocrite, which is a much more harsh accusation. He does try to convince the audience in no uncertain terms that war is the only option for revenge. His words "patient justice" indicates in some ways that he may plan to attack the enemy in the same manner, like a thief in the middle of the night.

Prime Minister Tony Blair speaking to his country shortly after the September 001 attack on the United States is so easy to listen to and understand. He states facts and assures his people that he is confident and able to use whatever means necessary to protect them. Words that may be considered euphemisms in his speech like "profound solidarity" or "given succor" are very much a part of the British language. He is the only speaker that does not refer to God when talking about war or conflict. His confidence showed clear when he used the words "defeat it we must" when talking about taking on the enemy.

Osama Bin Laden's video statement following the attack he directed on the United States is hard to understand. He refers to President Bush as the "head of the international infidels", therefore accusing him of having no pretense for God. I wonder if that statement was made vengefully in response to President Bush accusing him of the same thing. His point of view on God, or Allah, would offend even those not very religious when he indicated his thanks to him for helping them murder thousands of innocent people.

Ranking the above speeches in order of persuasiveness, I would have to place Blair at the top of the list simply because he did not sugar coat his words. In order after Blair, in my opinion, it would be Roosevelt, Churchill, Bush, and then Bin Laden. My personal opinion of President Bush is not high, so I am probably biased in my judgment on their speeches. I would say that from reading his speech that has the ability to persuade people with the constant direction towards religion in his words. I will certainly begin to pay more attention to euphemisms that I hear, perhaps I can send some ideas to President Bush.
