In the poem ‘Glasgow 5 March 171' by Edwin Morgan, the poet uses his language skills to cleverly portray a message about the violence, about Glasgow life and about how people often choose to ignore scenes such as what this poem describes.

The poem begins with an innocent young couple being falling through a shop window on Sauchiehall Street. The poem goes into great detail, describing how they were falling, the damage the glass had done and the expressions on their faces. Morgan then goes on to describe the two youths who committed this heinous act. The poem gave details of the youths faces during this vicious attack, which happened to show no emotion what-so-ever. Finally, we are informed of two people who were driving past, who chose to keep their eyes on the road instead of getting involved and trying to help this young couple, who at this point will be desperately needing all the help they can get.

To emphasize the incident Morgan uses many key words and phrases, such as the harsh sounding words used at the beginning of the poem. When the boy and girl are falling through the glass we are informed that the glass is "ragged" and that it "shattered" when they were pushed through it. By using the word shattered Morgan indicates that not only has the glass from the window shattered but the young couples lives and hopes have been shattered too.

Another harsh sounding word Morgan used was bristling. "The young man's face is bristling with fragments of glass". With use of this word, the poet gives us the impression that the fragments of glass have become like a beard on the man's face. This is excellent word choice as it helps us imagine the incident in greater detail.

The poet also describes this attack by informing us that the girl had on a "wet-look white coat". Morgan's description of the girls coat might have two meanings as we do not know if her coat is wet-look just because of the style, or because there is blood on the coat. This makes the attack seem more gruesome.

During the poem Morgan informs us that the couple's faces showed "surprise" and "shock" and showed only the "beginning of pain". These descriptions let us know that although the attack is over, the young couple have only begun to feel the pain.

Now the couple are done with, Morgan tells us that the youths are "about to complete the operation". This suggests that this assault was planned that the job is almost finished. The youths are now reaching into the shop to steal what they could "smartly". This word can suggest a number of things. Smart can mean this was done intelligently and also quickly. It can also mean that something hurts, which may be referring back to the innocent couple. Then we are told that "their faces show no expression". The youth's blank faces highlight their total disregard for other people's lives

Finally Morgan goes on to describe the two drivers in the background who witness the attack. "It is a sharp clear night". Use of the word sharp refers back to the broken window, and clear in forms us that the drivers could easily see the attack happening. "In the background two drivers keep their eyes on the road". This shows the ignorance of some people who, instead of helping people in need, decide to ignore the things which they do not want to see.

In this poem, Morgan uses an unusual technique where he looks at the poem as a series of photographs. Each photograph is described in great detail and each show an event of this attack.

The first photo described in the poem is of the couple falling through the window, bracing themselves for impact. Next is a picture of the youths that pushed the innocent couple, looting the shop from the window that the couple were pushed through. The last photograph features two drivers passing by who decided to ignore this sickening offence.

Morgan has cleverly included several themes in this poem, one of which is violence. Around this time Glasgow was a very violent place and this is reflected through the poet's description of this appalling crime which he may have witnessed. What makes this evil act worse is the fact that the innocent couple appear to be picked at random. This leads me to another theme of uncaring attitudes. It would take a cruel, heartless and probably desperate person to execute such a brutal attack and by Morgan's description of the youth's faces which "show no expression", these criminals fit the bill. The last theme I found in the poem was that of people not wanting to get involved. I am sure the drivers in this poem had their reasons for not getting involved, possibly fear or maybe that they just do not care, but whatever it is they cannot be criticized too much because I would bet that the majority of people in their position would do the exact same thing since this is just human nature.

In conclusion, I feel that this poem is very interesting and also intelligent as the many themes teach us numerous lessons. One of these lessons is to not ignore what we do not wish to see. I really enjoyed reading this poem and I hope that in the future no-one relives the events of Glasgow 5 March 171.

Superbowl Story

Essay written by Anonymous

HERE BEGINS THE BOOK OF THE TALES OF THE SUPER BOWL When the frigid air of January has blanketed every treetop and house alike with its gentle frost; when birds, squirrels, and the like are nowhere to be found close to home- then folks long to go on trips to temperate sites; and especially from every corner of the States they travel to Pasadena every few years, to watch The Super Bowl there; the finals for the great football season which has entertained them the past few months.

One day in that season when I went to Landesman Travel in Teaneck, ready to reserve a seat on an airline for Pasadena no matter what it took, I saw a sign for a special offer, half the price of what I had planned on spending, for a private jet to The Super Bowl; first seven people served. As I inquired, I discovered that I was the seventh and final person. We were to meet at terminal 76B at Newark Airport one half hour before scheduled take-off, 60 A.M. Super Bowl Sunday, to check the luggage and make acquaintances for the ride, which I am going to tell you about. But, nevertheless, while I have time and space, before I go farther in this account, it seems reasonable to tell you all about each of the passengers, as they appeared to me; who they were, and of what social status, and also what sort of clothes they wore. And I shall begin with the Sports Doctor.

There was among us a Sports Doctor who was a great follower of the Hippocratic oath, never neglecting any player who believed he was in need. He had preformed admirably in the Giants struggle for success, during which he had traveled near and far by their side, keeping the team in greatest health. Even in this time off of his, he wishes to be close by their side, front row by the Giants bench, giving his support, only morally not physically. He owns two foreign sports cars( how appropriate for his occupation) and his dress is most informal for a practicing doctor, just a buttoned down shirt and slacks.

Next was an Electrician, who worked quite diligently all week long and would help his neighbor no matter what hour of day. But if it would happen that any person in distress would require his assistance during the three tense hours of Giants football a week, on Sunday or even Monday night, he would apologetically decline and offer his service at the end of the game. When not at work, the Electrician would read the sports section of the newspaper or would watch Sportscenter on cable television. He was a fine, fat man, probably due to the excessive amount of beer which he consumed during the games. He wore T-shirts which were always tight on him and jeans just below his gut which exposed some of himself when he bent over to perform some task.

There was also a Student who was simple and was an underachiever at his community college which he rarely attended. He was encouraged by his parents to enjoy his youth so he set no goals for himself for the future. His father got him tickets to many important Giants football games, including The Super Bowl. He loved the Giants and watched all the rest of the games on television. He wore whatever was around, usually a casual shirt and jeans.

With him was his Girlfriend who was innocent and knew little about the game. The extent of her knowledge was that there are a bunch of guys in tight pants who throw and kick an oblong ball. Yet she enjoyed watching the games with the Student because of the expressions of joy she received from him when the Giants were successful in winning the game. She wore tight casual clothes, simple earrings, and light make-up.

The young Pharmacist was very popular and wasnt afraid to take a risk. He wasnt a true pharmacist but was called this because he supplied people with drugs to make them feel better. He didnt care much for football but received the tickets as payment for a smoking drug from a man who gave these away rather than having both of his arms broken. He had dark black skin and wore flashy clothes, his pants usually were quite low.

There was a very serious Lawyer among us. He was constantly engrossed in his work and very dedicated to his firm. He won the tickets from a raffle, but Im sure he would have preferred a new briefcase, his old one was beginning to fall apart because he took it everywhere with him. He would sometimes watch football when he was a child but has had nothing to do with it since then. He did have some vacation days to take off from work and it was a good time to go to California anyway. He always wore a black suit and his tie was never mussed.

Now I have told you about the status, dress, and the number of these passengers and why this group met at the airport which was in Newark. But now I must tell you what we did at the airport and afterwards I will tell you about the trip. But I ask you to forgive me for any vulgarity because I speak colloquially telling you the statements and actions of these people, if not directly quote them. Also forgive me for not arranging the people in authoritative importance as it should be.

Our Pilot made us all comfortable. He is a worthy pilot, and is witty, charming, and handsome. After we had paid our round trip fair, he boarded us onto the jet. He then addressed us on the loudspeaker Attention, lady and gentlemen, this is pilot speaking. Welcome aboard the private non-stop trip to Pasadena. Due to some technical difficulties, there will be no on-flight movie. To make your flight a little more enjoyable, Id like to make a suggestion. Each passenger will tell two tales each flight and the person who tells the best will receive a meal paid for by the others in the airport restaurant when we return to Newark. If you all agree, please pick a lot from a hat and the one who picks the paper with a 1 on it will start off. Enjoy your flight. We immediately drew a lot and the Sports Doctor picked the paper with the 1 on it, which made everyone happy, so he had to tell his tale first. Since he realized he had to go first he said Well, since I must start the game, I welcome the decision. Lets start the trip and listen to what I say.

And with that, the plane took off, and the Sports Doctor readily began his tale and spoke this way

Debatably the most controversial issue in the fields of medicine and theology, euthanasia has a great many undeniable disadvantages. A morally unacceptable way to deal with inconvenient elderly, assisted suicide allows humanity the option of living. Life being an unalienable right, should not be regarded as an option. Voluntary euthanasia as an option for the terminally ill is an inconceivable practice due to the disastrous effects it has on the individuals directly involved, society as a whole, and the professional field of medicine.

Euthanasia has an overwhelming amount of guilt and responsibility on the people explicitly involved. With such a low cost, socially acceptable option available, the patient and their families experience a large amount of guilt accompanying the treatment. With this "honorable" way of dealing with the situation, patients would feel pressured into the expected choice, either resulting in guilt from not using lethal injection or a choice derived from their guilt in favor of the process. The family faces an equal amount of guilt for the recommendation, or for not whole-heartedly rejecting the idea; especially if the patient acts in favor of suicide to test his or her self worth to relatives based on their reaction. At the same time, and in much the same way, a great deal of responsibility presents itself in such an issue. The patient has the responsibility for a valid decision despite social pressures such as the acceptable, low cost, least burdening route. Relatives must take an impartial side to the matter and overlook their own interests and conveniences when counseling the ill. Analyzing each situation will ensure such stressful conditions as undiagnosed depression or misapprehension of the details surrounding the event does not cloud judgments. As is obvious, there are many emotions affecting everyone involved with such a serious matter that may haunt his or her consciousness for years.

Furthermore, the implementation of euthanasia will have major effects on society, resulting in the distress of humanity for generations to come. Conveying to our society the deliberate taking of one's life as an acceptable practice contradicts law and morality. If the taking of another's life under certain circumstances becomes frequent, then as a result, murder statistics will increase due to the common person granting himself the authority to differentiate the validity of the exceptions. With the declining morality of our social structure, the introduction of premeditated, assisted suicide will not help matters. Next, involuntary euthanasia and instances of not following prescribed procedures would inevitably escalate to unacceptable numbers. Regardless of precautions taken, there will never be an impeccable way of enforcing laws that limit misuse and keep lethal injections out of the wrong hands. The inadvertent aftermath remains distinctively apparent in areas where euthanasia has been legalized, such as Holland, where instances are occurring excruciatingly too often and cannot be overlooked. Likewise, social humanity and political order will obviously diminish when dealing with a dilemma of such proportions.

Moreover, the medical field that communities have worked so hard establishing will slowly dissipate with disastrous results. Understood on a widespread basis as among the most considerably cost efficient methods used to solve modern day ailments, euthanasia will be favored in many cases rather than administering the proper care. Funding in geriatric and palliative medicine will suffer with such a low cost alternative available, stunting the progression of discovering cures for the terminal diseases that select practitioners are so quick to alleviate with death. The promotion of assisted suicide will become too common as a result, and advances in medicine will slow. Still, a tragic result would be the regression of genuine relationships between patients and their doctors that makes medical treatment so effective. Trust continues to be the basis of every doctor's ability to relate to his patient and is extremely important in the diagnoses and treatment of health conditions. For this reason, cases of people avoiding doctors for treatment out of fear that euthanasia will be a recommendation are already apparent where the procedure is legal. Therefore, in order to maintain the steady growth in medical technology and development, euthanasia has no place in the field.

Consequently, the resulting risks associated with the legalizing of this brutish and obsolete form of treatment as common practice clearly remains too great to warrant proper justification. When the result of malpractice associated with voluntary euthanasia is as costly a price as a person's life, little or no room for error is acceptable. The medical field, social community, and people associated with the procedure stand to suffer too greatly from the result of allowing assisted suicide. Taking into account but a few of the many drastic problems with the incorporation of such a controversial issue, one can only hope authorities do not fall victim to the uneducated misconception and misinterpretation of the details involved.

INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS V. LAW AND ORDER

There exists debate over many criminal justice issues in society because there is division over which should take precedence the rights of the individual or the rights of the majority. The latter justifies affording greater power and influence to law enforcement and prosecutors because it is believed that safety of the public should supercede the rights of the individual. In most cases, those that defend the law and order approach only seek to have it applied to those that break the law or who may present a direct threat to the safety of the wider society. In some cases, those that defend this approach desire to have it apply to areas that raise particular controversy. These areas include crimes that have not yet been committed but may be likely to be committed because an individual or group may have committed a crime in the past or are suspected of engaging in criminal activity in the present. Strict proponents of the law and order perspective seek to have law enforcement have greater latitude to have criminals arrested, charged and convicted. The law and order perspective contends that too great an emphasis on individual rights will restrict law enforcement and allow offenders to escape punishment. Civil libertarians are concerned that arbitrary police practices that may occur should they be afforded greater latitude may infringe on human and Constitutional rights.Due process is the concept that is associated with the individual rights v. law and order issue. The concepts restricts the power of the state a more particularly law enforcement and prosecutors. The Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution, contains separate individual rights. Of these, 1 of them address procedural rights for persons accused of criminal acts. In 178, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the prohibitions against government action that are in these amendments were restrictions only at the federal level but not on the State level.

In moving from the personal sector into the private sector, an individual's private rights and civil privileges tend to supercede their personal rights. On entering the public sector, specifically political life and public office but also as a celebrity, an individual relinquishes even more of their personal and private rights. Investments owned by Presidents of the United States must be held in blind trusts, out of their control and, in theory, out of range of their knowledge. Intimate details of personal lives may become public information. Criticism and ridicule goes with the territory as celebrities, public officials and policies become the subject of late night comedy shows and cartoons. Public personalities endure it all with very little defense and virtually no recourse. For better or worse, a free society has the collective right, in the form of the personal and private rights of its members, to voice its opinion.

However, many cultures do not share the primacy of the value of individualism. Consider the factual data presented by Davis that about 70% of all cultures are collectivistic (i.e., loyalties of a person to a group exceed the rights of the individual) rather than individualistic (i.e., the rights of the individual supercede those of the group). With individualism, importance is placed on individual inputs, rights and rewards (Andrews, 1, p. 476). In many cultures, health decisions are not made by an individual but by a group family, community and/or society. Socialized medicine or government sponsored health care for all residents is reflective of the value placed on collectivism.

Therefore, reflecting on the values that predominate in the culture you practice, attain an education, visit, or read about is a requirement for ethical thoughtfulness. Ethics has many definitions but, typically, ethics is viewed as a systematic way of examining the moral life to discern right and wrong; it also requires a decision or action based on moral reasoning. Ethical conflicts occur when a person, group or society is uncertain about what to do when faced with competing moral choices (Silva, 10). Ethical conflicts and issues occur within or among cultures and are usually precipitated by cultural/subcultural values in opposition.

In the passage By Any Other Name, by Santha Rau, she tells a story of when she was a five and a half year old little girl growing up in Zorinabad, going through the changes of moving and trying out public schools. Her mother had taught her and her sister up until she got ill and couldn't continue to teach them herself. The girls went to school, and the first day started the disaster of their very short tour of public schools. The head mistress changed the girls' names from their birth-given Indian names to "pretty English names". The girls would go through many more unfair consequences for being Indian. They would have to leave their culture at home and go to school as a different person. I don't agree with this treatment because I think every person is entitled to flaunt their culture and their own rights as a human being.

The girls were never called their real names while at school; they would be referred to with their new names. There were other Indian children at the school that also had to put up with this same unfair treatment. They had to wear the "uniform" that consisted of a plain cotton dress instead of their beautiful Indian clothing. They were frowned upon for having anything other than sandwiches for lunch, and Santha and her classmate would sneak and show each other drawings that they had secretly done. The girls were going to public schools also because the exams and degrees from entirely Indian schools were not considered valid, which is just one more thing that made Santha's sister, Premila, upset. They had gone to school for a week when Premila had enough. Her class was about to take a test when her teacher told her and the other Indian children to sit in the back of the room and space themselves one desk between each child because, as her teacher told her, "Indians cheat," and Premila walked out. She went into Santha's classroom and got her, and they walked home. Now this was a big deal to walk home, they were from a prominent family who was very well taken care of. After they got home, she told her mother what had happened and they did not go back.

Hearing this story of Santha and her prejudiced school reminds me of a time when I was in high school. I was a member of the Flag Corps, and we had certain requirements that we had to follow. There was a printed rule book that each member had to follow or we would be given marks, and we were only allowed so many marks before they removed us from the squad. One rule we had to abide by was weight restrictions. We were weighed every Friday before the football games, before any basketball game we performed at, and before the Mardi Gras parades we marched in. Another rule we had to abide by was a simple rule; you could not miss school the day of or the day before a performance. And we had to make a G.P.A. of "C " or better with no ‘D"'s or "F"'s. We had big sisters and little sisters that consisted of the members that had been on the team for a year or more, and little sisters that consisted of the new team members. My second year on the team I was an officer, and as a big sister this particular year, we had two little sisters for every big sister. As an officer we got to vote on who was the best performer for the week, I had two very good team members as sisters, and as an officer I was encouraged to vote for my little sisters for Team Member of the Week. Every week I voted for the same sister, who I felt was better than any of the other girls, but she never got picked. The other officers voted for their friends, and never paid much attention to the lil' sis I had tried bringing attention to. Well, my lil' sis was voted to go to All-Stars and the highest two officers weren't. I felt my opinion had been over-looked, but I let it be. The captain of the team missed two performance day Fridays in a row so she could stay home and sun-bathe, and nothing was ever told to her. The co-captain was forty pounds over weight and nothing was ever told to her. These were all rules in the handbook we were told we would get marks for, and we would be punished for every mark by not being able to perform at the next performance. I got one "D" on my progress report and I was kicked off the team. I was told I could not go to the performance in Tennessee that I had already paid for and didn't get my money back from. I felt so cheated that I missed several days of school, and my outlook on school as a whole went down.

I feel that every person is entitled to their fair rights. I feel that each person should be treated equally and no rule should be bent for one person, no matter the circumstance. I felt like Santha's sister Premila, I felt I was being judged unfairly. I didn't take action and walk away from the problem, but I did have the same feeling of disgust in my stomach. I had to pay my price, and I am probably a better person for it in the long run. But to a teenage girl, I felt I had been betrayed by the other team members, the sponsors, and the whole school.

Dehumanizing TV

The term "Reality TV" is a classic marketing label. It has nothing to do with reality, but the media uses the term, so it sticks. It is an extended game show, or "human experiment calling itself something else," that zooms in on the small percent of privacy within the common individual, destroying the ideals of human dignity (Ford). These new ‘reality' shows have warped humanization by "plastering" imperfect lives, nasty arguments, and aberrant hook-ups all over public television in series such as "Survivor", "Big Brother", and "Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire?" (Quindlen). Entertainment today no longer promotes lighthearted humor and family values. Through ‘reality TV' people want to see others succumb to their fears for moneynot survival. If dehumanization reduces human beings from civil to savage, then reality TV dehumanizes; if indignation is the twinge of shame at the loss of privacy, then reality TV is damaging to human dignity. Therefore, it can be resolved that reality TV destroys the human morale.

Some claims advocate that reality TV helps educate and inform. For some, it is a matter of comfort watching someone else go through common drama in life. Educationally speaking, watching "Boot Camp", a military-training "survivor" look-a-like, or "The 100 House", the exposition of a family spending three months with 100s-era technology, can edify people allowing them to observe an attempt at survival in a more primitive environment. On an informative basis, a society can learn more about itself and it constituents by watching reality shows depict the mundane lives of its people. In 001, Russians suggested that its viewers watched reality shows because it provided a "window into the middle of a new generation and (showed) what kind of society Russia had become (Daniszewski)." Conventional wisdom is that TV exists as a medium for those with nothing better to do with themselves; however, in a society "with people who have a to-do list instead of a life...within a nation living at warp speed," to experience and observe life's drama on the TV screen is much more efficient! "All the passion, none of the pain or perspiration (Quindlen)." Under these justifications, the fact that some reality TV shows are educational and informative is a concession.

Ultimately, reality TV both dehumanizes and damages human dignity. Dehumanization and human indignation exist as two distinctly different concepts. The destruction of ideals that represents the human race and destruction of ideals that represents man's moral standards exist on two totally different levels. One of the two relates to mankind as a whole versus nature, while the latter deals with one man's culture versus another's; therefore, whether or not reality TV is dehumanizing or damaging to human dignity depends upon given circumstances. When "Survivor" began casting, it had a psychologist analyze personalities and the emotional stability of each candidate. "You...don't want boring, normal people on," said Dr. Kate Wachs, a media psychologist in Chicago (Rohan). This pre-screening of cast members helps come to the conclusion that reality TV is staged to a point of intended indignationto decide who is normal and who is above or below normality is to challenge one man's culture against another man's. Handpicking people with contradicting personalities and stuffing them into an unnatural life together, then claiming that it is reality serves no purpose but to set up an artificial, morally degrading situation that attracts commercial attention and general curiosityreality TV is a shallow game of manipulation amongst men and women.

"Survivor", "Big Brother", and "Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire?", are three infamous examples of the exploding reality TV genre. All three also represent prime examples of damage to human dignity. In "Survivor", the concept of a person viciously competing against another person detracts from civility all together and brings the situation down to the level of savagery. In "Big Brother", it is primarily about intrusion of privacy, which is the most important element in human civility. Violating this would mean affecting human dignity. Forcing people to be silent while stuffed together in a prison-like home deforms human nature, since human beings are social animals. Likewise, "Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire?" forces emotions to blend simply for entertainment, thus promoting artificial and superficial relationships and emotions. This type of entertainment affects moral standards that people have about love, marriage, and relationships in general. Encouraging the antithesis of such moral beliefs disrespects human dignity and strikes out at deeply rooted values in modern society.

Entertainment exists because of the fact that people like to ridicule the anomalies in life thus creating what people call humor. Due to this, focusing on sexuality, the use of the lavatory, and petty drama is considered entertaining; however, reality TV, created solely for this kind of entertainment, damages human dignity as it affects the moral standards of people and modern society. Concert Review

Imagine walking into your first classical music concert soaked from coming out of a storm. Then you proceed to get out your recital card and it is wet as well. The door attendant stares at you with a smirk and then hands you a program. This is exactly what happened in the beginning of my first classical music concert done by professionals.

After getting off to a rough start, the evening got better. After I found a seat I read the concert etiquette on the back of the program and then the lights started to dim. I was actually extremely excited to see what this experience would be like.

I was there to see Thaddeus Brys and Susan Brys play the cello and piano respectively. I noticed before they started to play there first piece that Mr. Brys was making some last minute tightening on his cello. First thing to come to my mind when I saw him playing with the strings was that the cello was obviously a string instrument and the piano is a keyboard instrument. When Mr. Brys was all set he gave a head nod and Mrs. Brys began to play the piano.

The first piece of music that they performed was a Sonata in E Major by Giuseppe Valentini. The beginning was slow and mellow, but his fingers were moving very fast up and down on the strings. At first I thought that only his fingers would move fast during fast parts but that wasn't the case. As the piece continued the pace picked up and the pitch got higher every so often. I felt a transition from sadness to excitement while observing the piece. There were two times when I thought the piece was over because it started to slow down gradually. There was even a conclusive type sound, but all of a sudden a deep quick sound echoed throughout the auditorium. I was even getting ready to clap, but then I realized it wasn't over. When the piece was finished no one clapped, so I waited as well. I figured that the clapping didn't occur because the second piece came about five to ten seconds after the first one.

The second piece was a Sonata in A Minor by Franz Schubert. It started with an elegant sound that was consonance. It was a conjunct movement because there were definitely smooth transitions. During this piece I noticed contrapuntal devices being used. The use of imitation was the most frequent. Toward the middle of the piece there was a big pause where I thought it was time for intermission, however after the pause the cello played solo for about ten to twelve seconds before the piano joined with the cello again. The solo piece was very dramatic. The piece was soon over after that, at which time the intermission took place.

Right before intermission, both artist stood up as loud applauding was taking place. About twenty seconds into the intermission I thought to myself, I wonder how long this will last. I found out pretty quick that it was over ten seconds after I thought that very thought. I was sort of surprised that it did not last longer, but I guess it was just a time for the performers to walk off stage, regroup and possibly stretch a little.

When the performers came back on Mr. Brys started messing with his strings again to get it tuned right. He then announced to the crowd that he was hot, and needed to take off his jacket. That was the first speaking of any type since I had been there.

The third piece seemed like the longest to me. The piece was a Sonata in G Minor by Fryderyk Chopin. The piece began with the piano playing solo without the cello for approximately ten seconds. It was upbeat and most of the piece was fast. The sounds I was hearing almost sounded romantic at first but then quickly changed. The durations were quick. Then my favorite part occurred when Mr. Brys played the cello by plucking the strings. It was fast and exciting and I really got into that part. Then just when I thought it was over the piano began to play again without the cello, just like the beginning. Then the piece went from deeper to softer to quicker in seconds. The sounds were all in a sequence. The transition to the final piece was hard to tell.

I still wouldn't know when the piece ended and where the fourth began. However, at one point during the fourth piece Mr. Brys lost his place and apologized to the audience at which time the started over. That is when I figured out where the fourth piece began. The final piece was a Polonaise Brillante by Fryderyk Chopin. Toward the end of the concert the cello played deep while the piano was being played soft. Then the piece sort of just gradually ended, at which time the performers stood up and gave a bow while the crowd was cheering and applauding.

Overall the experience was a positive one. It was rough in the beginning, but it ended up being exciting and enjoyable for me. I would definitely recommend seeing a cello and piano duet to anyone who has not seen one already. It was nice to tie things I have learned in class to what was going on in a live concert. It helped me get a more hands on approach, and I can't wait till the next concert I attend.
