Concert Review
Imagine walking into your first classical music concert soaked from coming out of a storm. Then you proceed to get out your recital card and it is wet as well. The door attendant stares at you with a smirk and then hands you a program. This is exactly what happened in the beginning of my first classical music concert done by professionals.
After getting off to a rough start, the evening got better. After I found a seat I read the concert etiquette on the back of the program and then the lights started to dim. I was actually extremely excited to see what this experience would be like.
I was there to see Thaddeus Brys and Susan Brys play the cello and piano respectively. I noticed before they started to play there first piece that Mr. Brys was making some last minute tightening on his cello. First thing to come to my mind when I saw him playing with the strings was that the cello was obviously a string instrument and the piano is a keyboard instrument. When Mr. Brys was all set he gave a head nod and Mrs. Brys began to play the piano.
The first piece of music that they performed was a Sonata in E Major by Giuseppe Valentini. The beginning was slow and mellow, but his fingers were moving very fast up and down on the strings. At first I thought that only his fingers would move fast during fast parts but that wasn't the case. As the piece continued the pace picked up and the pitch got higher every so often. I felt a transition from sadness to excitement while observing the piece. There were two times when I thought the piece was over because it started to slow down gradually. There was even a conclusive type sound, but all of a sudden a deep quick sound echoed throughout the auditorium. I was even getting ready to clap, but then I realized it wasn't over. When the piece was finished no one clapped, so I waited as well. I figured that the clapping didn't occur because the second piece came about five to ten seconds after the first one.
The second piece was a Sonata in A Minor by Franz Schubert. It started with an elegant sound that was consonance. It was a conjunct movement because there were definitely smooth transitions. During this piece I noticed contrapuntal devices being used. The use of imitation was the most frequent. Toward the middle of the piece there was a big pause where I thought it was time for intermission, however after the pause the cello played solo for about ten to twelve seconds before the piano joined with the cello again. The solo piece was very dramatic. The piece was soon over after that, at which time the intermission took place.
Right before intermission, both artist stood up as loud applauding was taking place. About twenty seconds into the intermission I thought to myself, I wonder how long this will last. I found out pretty quick that it was over ten seconds after I thought that very thought. I was sort of surprised that it did not last longer, but I guess it was just a time for the performers to walk off stage, regroup and possibly stretch a little.
When the performers came back on Mr. Brys started messing with his strings again to get it tuned right. He then announced to the crowd that he was hot, and needed to take off his jacket. That was the first speaking of any type since I had been there.
The third piece seemed like the longest to me. The piece was a Sonata in G Minor by Fryderyk Chopin. The piece began with the piano playing solo without the cello for approximately ten seconds. It was upbeat and most of the piece was fast. The sounds I was hearing almost sounded romantic at first but then quickly changed. The durations were quick. Then my favorite part occurred when Mr. Brys played the cello by plucking the strings. It was fast and exciting and I really got into that part. Then just when I thought it was over the piano began to play again without the cello, just like the beginning. Then the piece went from deeper to softer to quicker in seconds. The sounds were all in a sequence. The transition to the final piece was hard to tell.
I still wouldn't know when the piece ended and where the fourth began. However, at one point during the fourth piece Mr. Brys lost his place and apologized to the audience at which time the started over. That is when I figured out where the fourth piece began. The final piece was a Polonaise Brillante by Fryderyk Chopin. Toward the end of the concert the cello played deep while the piano was being played soft. Then the piece sort of just gradually ended, at which time the performers stood up and gave a bow while the crowd was cheering and applauding.
Overall the experience was a positive one. It was rough in the beginning, but it ended up being exciting and enjoyable for me. I would definitely recommend seeing a cello and piano duet to anyone who has not seen one already. It was nice to tie things I have learned in class to what was going on in a live concert. It helped me get a more hands on approach, and I can't wait till the next concert I attend.
