Revenge and Wit

The first few scenes in act four seem to move by very quickly. Basically Cladius wants to get Hamlet the heck out of Denmark for fear that he will be the next victim on Hamlet's death list. He sends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern England. Theses a re two crapy friend seeing as they have totally turned against Hamlet and become, "sponges" benefiting from their friendship with him by soaking up " the king's countenance, his rewards, his authorities" (1, 15-16). Both men are very pathetic during this scene with their inability to understand Hamlets wit. They take Hamlet the see the King and Hamlet continues with his whole "madness" act, but with Cladius he is playing a very dangerous game. Unlike Hamlet's two friends, Cladius IS a match for Hamlet's wit, and the king grows very angry and impatient with Hamlet's riddles.

Cladius can't get a straight answer out of Hamlet and you can tell is finding it very hard to maintain his composure in front of the court. Hamlet is loved by the people and Cladius seems to keep that in mind when speaking to Hamlet. Hamlet seems to converse easily with people of every social group, as demonstrated by his conversation with everyone he encounters outside the court soldiers and players. Ophelia's recollection of the Hamlet she knew- "The observ'd of all observers"- tell me how the court as well as the people followed his every move (Act Scene 1).

In scene 4 Fortinbras is reintroduced back into the story as making his way through Denmark on his way to Poland. I think that this scene show Hamlet's admiration of Fortinbra's determination. I think that this scene gives Hamlet the confidence he needs to perform his task. I mean if Fortunibra can lead an army into battle and death, Hamlet can revenge his father's murder and his mother's ruin.

There was a lot going on in scene 5, Laertes has returned to Denmark for his father funeral and is enraged with revenge towards Cladius. Cladius is the cause of his fathers death, his sister has gone mad, and the secretive burial of his father! Polonius was the chief minister to the king. Usually, a man of his rank would be given an elaborate funeral. Laertes asks why his father was given "no noble right nor formal ostentation" (14). Cladius seems to a lot calmer during this threat, maybe due to that fact that he feel on guilt towards this murder seeing as it wasn't his doing, or maybe because he knows he can easily manipulate Laertes. Cladius pulls Laertes into his web by acting like a fatherly figure towards him. He knows that Hamlet has escaped the grasp of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern and is headed back to Denmark to kill him. Cladius is really getting anxious; he has already hired Swiss mercenaries to act as his body guards because he can no longer trust his own army but just to be safe he now turns Laertes against Hamlet. He uses several skillful devices to accomplish this, including declarations of friendship and common enmity, candor about his most intimate affairs, and, of course, flattery.

Laertes rises quickly to the bait. He tells Cladius that he has come into possession of some very lethal poison which Cladius will offer to Hamlet to ensure that Laertes wins the duel. This scheme proves how evil Cladius really is. IN the last part of this scene Gertrude interrupts their talk and informs them that Ophelia has drowned. Hearing this new you kind of wonder if Laertes's grief is too much to bear and if he will be stable enough to perform the plan.
