"Vicious minds, abound with anger and revenge, are incapable of feeling the pleasure of forgiving their enemies."

Philip Dormer Stanhope Chesterfield (164-177)

One of the important themes of Great Expectations was revenge.

For one thing, Pip got revenge on some of the people that treated him poorly. Firstly, Pip got Orlick fired from Miss Havisham's. Orlick always despised Pip and treated him unfairly, so Pip told Mr. Jaggers that Orlick would not be the right person to guard Miss Havisham's house. Likewise, Pip tried to get Trabb's boy fired. As Pip walked like a gentleman down High Street, Trabb's boy mocked him several times causing the townspeople to laugh at Pip. Moreover, Pip had his revenge on Bentley Drummle when he challenged him at the Finches meeting. He accused Drummle of lying about Estella and made him look silly in front of his friends. In addition, Pip got revenge on Herbert by beating him up in the garden at Miss Havisham's. Herbert head butted Pip and challenged him to fight. There were several occasions when Pip took revenge against the people that treated him badly. They were Orlick, Bentley Drummle, Herbert Pocket, and Trabb's boy.

Moreover, Miss Havisham got revenge on as many people as she could. Primarily, she got revenge on Matthew Pocket because she thought he was being scheming like the rest of her family. He told her that Compeyson could not be trusted. She banished him from her house forever. Similarly, she let her family members believe that she was Pip's benefactor. This was vengeful of her because her family members were greedy and scheming. In fact, she also had revenge on her family by only giving very small amounts of money to Camilla, Sarah, and Georgiana. They were very greedy and expected to receive a great share of the fortune. Finally, Miss Havisham sought revenge on the male sex. She had had her heart broken by a young man that said he loved her but then he cancelled the wedding. She used Estella to break the hearts of men. Miss Havisham had a hard life and made up for it by seeking revenge throughout Great Expectations.

Furthermore, Bentley Drummle had revenge against a few people throughout the novel. For one thing, Drummle had revenge on Startop by threatening to throw a glass at him. Startop made a funny joke about Drummle borrowing money that upset him. Secondly, Drummle got revenge on Pip by embarrassing him at the Finches. He not only brought in proof of knowing Estella, but he also brought in a note that said he had spent an evening dancing with her. In like manner, Bentley had revenge against Pip at the Blue Boar. He yelled out to the waiter that he needed his horse as he was having dinner with Estella and wanted to be on time. Once again, Drummle had revenge on Pip by marrying Estella. Drummle knew how angry Pip would be when he married Estella. Drummle got revenge against Startop and against Pip several times during the book.

Finally, Magwitch had a difficult life and he sought revenge. He was blamed by Compeyson for both of their crimes and was imprisoned for twice as long. Compeyson was the leader of their crimes and Magwitch beat him up in the prison ship. In the same way, Compeyson later escaped from the prison ship as he feared Magwitch. Magwitch escaped after him, found him, then beat him up and attempted to drag him back to the hulks. Furthermore, Magwitch fought Compeyson in the water and drowned him. Compeyson lead police to him and tried to attack him when they met in the boats. Lastly, Magwitch had his revenge on society by making Pip a gentleman. The main reason that Magwitch received twice as much time was that Compeyson was a gentleman and he was not. Magwitch was treated unfair by many people and he got as much revenge as he could.

The major characters, Magwitch, Pip, Miss Havisham, and Bentley Drummle, felt that they had been treated unjustly and wanted to get even. All of these incidents combined to create suspense and demonstrate the major theme of revenge in the novel Great Expectations.
