I, personally, felt sympathetic towards her, because I filled in the gaps and assumed that she had no idea of the affair of his father and Elsie.

Rosy hands make her seem younger and innocent, while her calling at the house with the mother, who did most of the talking, makes her seem quite shy and again, innocent. Mrs Mortimer hired her because Elsie made her feel more wanted and needed around the house. But that turned out to be completely opposite to what happened.
Also, Joe Mortimer's view in the eyes of the reader could really change. In the start of the story, the reader is invited to feel sympathetic towards him, being middle-aged, living in a small house, doing hard labor, and looking at the children in the trains passing the farm, wishing that he could have children of his own with his wife. But with Joe cheating on his wife, the author creates a situation where the reader's feelings about him are likely to change, to feel unsympathetic towards him and thinking of him as a greedy, selfish old man.
After the pregnancy is revealed, we are positioned to possibly change feelings towards the characters again, seeing as Elsie doesn't want the baby, and Mr and Mrs Mortimer really want a child. The reader may not be unsympathetic towards anyone, since it seems that everything is resolved and the Mortimers have a baby. Others may feel unsympathetic towards everyone; towards the Mortimers for even considering taking the child, and towards Elsie for considering giving it away.
