Essay Lord of the Flies


"Civilization is the progress toward a society of privacy. The savage's whole


existence is public, ruled by the laws of his tribe. Civilization is the


process of setting man free from men." (Ayn Rand). Much like today, our society


is based on principles of order, law and regulations to keep man's primal


instincts in line. However, eventhough today those principles are not yet


followed by everyone, it is with great punishment and consequences that


wrongdoing is paid. As a result, it is extremely important to act justly among a


civilization in which violence and evil do not go hand in hand. Much more


important is the need of higher power or authority to prevent the principal and


concepts of modern man to revert to a more primitive part of their nature. In a


somewhat similar situation is the story of, "Lord of the flies", by William


Golding exposed to. Where the struggle for power and authority brought the


civilization of a tribe of boys on an island to lethal outcomes. The symbol used


by Golding in this novel further deepens the true significance of one of the


main themes. The symbol of the conch, the beast and the fire demonstrate the


need for civilization as the main theme of this novel.


The conch is by far the most significant symbol that Golding uses to


portray and strengthen the main theme of the novel. The conch stands as a symbol


of law, democracy order and authority. In the story at the beginning the conch


becomes the basis of civilization for the boys. They use it to speak, to call


others and for power, without it the destruction of themselves could even be at


risk. The conch was Ralph's ultimate instrument to enforce leadership in him and


demand the respect of others. " He lifted the conch. Seem to me that we ought to


have a chief to decide things." (Golding ). Ralph's forcefulness made him gain


the leadership, which he struggles to maintain against jack throughout the


story. The discovery of the conch also symbolized the unity of everyone as he


called upon the first meeting with the conch. "By the time Ralph had finished


blowing the conch the platform was crowded." (Golding ) This meeting


established the beginning of organization and unity of the children and shows


the need for a society in between them. " We don't need the conch anymore. We


know who oughta say things. " (Golding 101) The statement made by Jack in which


the conch is no longer important for power of speak foreshadows the breakdown of


democracy on the island. Thus the physical destruction of the conch brought

A second symbol is the signal fire that Golding uses to develop his main theme.


The signal fire was the boy's only means of rescue and their only way to return


back to true civilization. "If a ship comes near the island they might not


notice us. WE must make a fire." (Golding 8) The boys realize that only with


responsibility and the untied work of everyone will be the only way to keep the


fire going. However some of the boys loose touch with being rescued and rather


prefer to play. Jack's obsession with hunting attracts the attention of the


choir, distracting them from keeping the fire on. It also shows that jack and


the choir would rather kill pigs than return home. The hostile environment in


which they are in starts to make them adapt to their surroundings where


responsibility is no longer a rule. Such environment with no rules allowed Jack


to feed the evil inside him to a point where overthrowing his leader became his


goal. In conclusion the signal fire was one of the causes that brought the


breakdown of the group into leader against leader and the breakdown of the boy's


small society.


The beast is also another significant symbol that exhibits the need for


civilization n order to surpress the darker side of human nature. The beast


first emerges when one of the little boys reports seeing something in the dark


the previous night. The boys dismiss this as his imagination and pay no


attention. Yet the boys fail to understand that the best is within them and not


around them. "Kill the pig! Cut his throat! Kill the pig! Bash him in!" (Golding


114) The chant showed how much hunting meant to the boys and how much they were


consumed by the desire to kill. "The desire to squeeze and hurt was


over-mastering." (Golding 115) The boy's game with Robert as a pig was an


initial savageness that the beast within them provoked. As a group their actions


should have been civilized but the beast within them was starting to control


their instincts. Furthermore the rivalry that takes place between jack and Ralph


brings out their anger which gets them closer to total savageness in the quest


to kill Ralph. Near the conclusion of the novel Jack feels that killing Ralph is


no different than killing a pig thus proving that his values for human life have


disappeared. Of all the boys it can be said that jack was the most affected by


the beast which leads to the conclusion of what the lack of a society with rules


can do. It will be justly to conclude that the beast as a symbol is a


substantial theme described by Golding.


In Lord of the flies the symbol of the conch, the beast and the fire further


deepens in detail the true significance of the theme that Golding expresses to


be the need for civilization in mankind. From beginning to end it is clear that


the innocence of man is mostly perceived to be Piggy and Ralph and the villains


Roger and Jack. It is only at the end when the boys realize what they had done


when the arrival of the officer occurred. It will be doubtful if the boys will


be able to live normal lives after the great ordeal that they have gone through.


However, the novel does give insight on what society can become if no rules are


establishes and forced upon civilians. It surely rises questions regarding our


past on how early humans behaved. The fact that even today such instincts are

In the first scene from the play King Lear that is written by the famous playwright William Shakespeare we witness King Lear who is poor at judging people and how he is blinded with beautiful words spoken by his evil daughters. The first act in King Lear is particularly significant in the play as it introduces the central characyers, relationships and themes explored throughout the play. Regan who is the second of Lears daughters also speaks falsely of her love for her father. She says that she is,

Cordelia, which is Lears youngest daughter, refuses to speak about blinding the love for her father. Instead she offered what was true. When she was pushed by her father to talkk like her sisters about her love for him, she says that,


I cannot heave/ My heart into my mouth I love your majesty/According to my bond; nor more nor less (Act one Scene one line ). In the words Cordelia utters we see the indiscreet simplicity of her love and the hollowness ofo her sisters pretensions.


In return for not lying as her sisters have done, she is banished by Lear and given nothing. Only later does Lear learn the truth that Cordelias love for him is true.


In Act one scene one we also see the two suitors, the Duke of Burgundy and the King of France who both want to marry Cordelia. Here we see how different the two men are when it comes to reality. The Duke of Burgundy stops wanting Cordelias hand in marriage when Lear makes it clear that she is no longer highly esteemed in his eyes. He is artificial. However the King Of France acts in a totally different manner when he learns about Cordelias fall from wealth. This King who can respcet Cordelias integrity takes her as his queen. The King of France comments in this scene, makes it clear

Kent tries to stand up to Lear in Cordelias honour, but L ear would not listen. To Kents words Lear responds with,

Lear does not want to open his eyes. The more he is reminded of the truth the angrier he gets. He was being too stubborn to see that Kent was only trying to do what was best for Lear. It is his rash haste, his violent thoughtlessness and his blindness that produces all his misfortunes.

Martin Luther King, Jr. and Gandhi were two great motivational and inspirational writers. They wanted to be heard and they would do just about anything to get their points across. The determination of these two men was extraordinarily impressive. They stuck with their beliefs through the hardest times in their lives, and they would never lose focus on what they wanted to accomplish. According to Gandhi, A believer in nonviolence is a pledge not to resort to violence or physical force either directly or indirectly of anything, but he is not precluded from helping men or institutions that are themselves not based on nonviolence (Gandhi, ). They both believed in the power of negotiation. They believed above all there had to be a solution to every problem and violence should not be a resort. According to King there are several steps to successfully run a nonviolent campaign. He states, In a nonviolent campaign there are four basic


steps collection of the facts to determine whether injustice exists; negotiation; self-purification; and direct action


(King, 1). This nonviolent campaign was very hard to work with, considering the brutality the black community had to deal with day in and day out. Some examples of this brutality, during segregation, were stated by King


When you have seen vicious mobs lynch your mother and fathers at will because and drown your sister and brothers at whim; when hate-filled policemen curse, kick, even kill your black brothers and sisters; when you see the vast majority of your twenty million Negro brothers smothering in an airtight cage of poverty in the midst of an affluent society; when your first name becomes nigger, your middle name becomes boy and your last name becomes John, and your wife and mother are never given the respect title Mrs.; when are you harried by day and haunted by night by the fact you are a Negro, living constantly at tiptoe stance, never quite knowing what to expect next, and are plagued with inner fears and outer resentment (King, 5)


Just after citing a few struggles the black community had to deal with during segregation, much self power and control was needed to still maintain his beliefs about nonviolence.


Gandhi and King did everything they did to try to get their points across. King would write letters to find reasons why segregation would always result in violence or hatred. He would write about why things, to the black community, were so unjust and what the difference is between just and unjust laws. Kings states, A just is a man made code that squares with moral law and the law of god. An unjust law is a code that is out of harmony with the moral law.


King was arrested for the parading in the streets trying to earn more support for his nonviolence campaign. He was only exploring his right of the first amendment in freedom of speech and the right to assemble. King states, All segregation statues are unjust because segregation distorts the soul and damages the soul. It gives the segregator a false sense of superiority and the segregated a false sense of inferiority (King, 7).


King would do anything to get his point across. He wouldnt even let his arrest take him off his concentration of a nonviolent community. No matter how dirty or mean someone was to king he would always treat them back with respect and always try to negotiate the situation to find a satisfactory mean between the two parties. A great example of this would at the end of Kings letter. He states, If I had said anything in this letter that overstates the truth and indicates an unreasonable impatience, I beg you to forgive me. If I have said anything that understands the truth and indicates my having a patience that allows mw to settle for anything less than brotherhood, I beg good to forgive me. King says this after all that has happened to him in the past, with the brutality and such things.


In conclusion, Gandhi and King were out to make a difference in the world. They would do anything in their power to make that difference and in the end they did just that. Even though there is still violence everyone where in the world today, there were some drastic changes made because of them. And even though there may never be a nonviolent world, at least they showed us that there is always something worth fighting for and if you want it bad enough it might happen. I think Gandhi said it best, Perfect nonviolence is impossible so long as we exist physically, for we would want some space at least to occupy. Perfect nonviolence whilst you are


inhabiting the body is only a theory like Euclids point or straight line, but we have to endeavor every moment of our lives (Gandhi, 4).

American Dream


Throughout time people have been striving for the American dream and financial success. In Arthur Millers, Death of a Salesman, the entire story focuses on the search for success and the American dream. Each character possesses a certain belief about financial success and the American dream. There are many different points of view of each character gives a message to the audience which defines success and the dream. In Arthur Millers, Death of a Salesman, the Loman family with the exception of Ben, had a certain lack of reality, which restrained the Loman's American dream.


All of the characters defiantly have problems with reality. Willy Loman is the most delusional of the play, often having many hallucinations and flashbacks. Willy was unable to live up to his own expectations of success. Ben, Willy's brother, is quite the opposite of his sibling. He is an extremely successful person who is wealthy. However it is quite hard to distinguish Ben as a real person of a figment of Willy's imagination. Biff Loman is Willy's grown son who is the oldest child in the family. Biff has been traveling around from job to job without lasting success. Charlie, Willy's neighbor and his only friend, tries to help Willy but Willy doesn't take to his kindness. All of these characters send different opinions to the audience about dealing with the American dream and financial successes of the era.


Willy, the main character of the story, is an elderly salesman who is at the end of his career. He develops a problem with reality and telling the difference between the present and the past. He lives in a delusional world and possesses strange beliefs about success. The company Willy worked has cut his salary and now he only works on commission. Willy goes back and forth through the entire play with different flashbacks of what happened in the past shows his lack of reality.


Ben's ideas about success are very different from his brother Willy's beliefs on the subject. Ben has always been successful and left his brother when they were young to pursue fortunes in Alaska and Africa. Ben in this story is a excellent symbol of success which makes Willy feel diminutive about himself. Ben's beliefs about the American dreams are about conquest of new territory. Willy had the chance to become partners with Ben, but refused and missed the diamond fortune his brother obtained. It's apparent that Ben's character and his way of life is what Willy wants and desires for his own life.


Biff viewpoint on success derives from his father like many peoples. He believes that success is dependent on how much people like someone. For a long time Biff believes that his life has been full of success but he soon realizes that his fathers illusions are nothing but holding him down. His father always thought that his life was going to be different than the life that he had. He begins to resent every word his father says to him. In the scene where Bernard, Charlie's son, informs Biff about his failing grade in Math, Willy says, that is unimportant he has scholarships from three schools. In Willies mind Bernard was the competition to Biff and now Bernard is a successful lawyer. In the end Biff believes his father is full of lies and illusions. His idea of and American dream is doing something he really enjoys outdoors using his muscles. His father is pushing him to be successful in business but that is not what he desires. Sophocles Characters Grouping on Oedipus Rex


In the tragedy Oedipus Rex (4-45 B.C.), Sophocles implemented a character grouping system that helped the people from the audience to identify themselves with the different societal classes. Three major hierarchical groups can be selected from the Greek's society of this period. The Supernatural group constituted by the gods, the Governmental or State group conformed by the Royalty, and the Populi group represented by Thebes' habitants. The used of a group model was the bridging tool that linked the audience and readers with the play. It worked as a mirror for the spectators, and reflected independent behaviors that characterize Athenians social structure.


"Your own eyes must tell you Thebes is in her extremity And can not lift her head from the surge of death. The quote presented above, shows how the gods are the number one power in Greece society. They have the supreme and omnipotent power to control everything on earth, without considering any military, political and cultural power obtained by the royalty.


The gods plagued the entire Thebes population because of its misbehavior, without taking in consideration how much power Oedipus and Iocate had. This proved the authority that they posses over all human beings devoid of discrimination. By grouping, Sophocles helped the public and readers to understand their personal roll in society. Oedipus Rex emphasized the importance of religious by creating an extreme situation of punishment for the Thebes habitants. The main purpose of this group distinction is to make the audience understand the importance of their gods, and how gods should be placed way above any human authority no matter how powerful this one could be.


The second group created was the State or Government. It is represented by the King and Queen of Thebes in this case, Laios and Iocaste at first followed by Oediopus and Iocaste. Sophocles, represent the State as the link between the gods and the people. By placing the royalty between the three groups, Sophocles automatically gave to the government a socio-political and cultural responsibility over the people of Thebes.

In the quote the Priest acted in representation of Thebes' people, by asking the king, Oedipus to save them from misery one more time. The authors intended to transmit to the readers and viewers, that they are responsible of who they elect for leaders, and also of making them to respond to the people by accomplishing the State mission.


The last group presented in the play is the habitants of Thebes. They are the least powerful and more suppressed of all groups because, they are in the bottom of the social structure where less power and resources are available.

(Sophocles 5)


Clearly the authors made the point of the mutual responsibility between the Government and the city by demonstrating how the people of Thebes had a voice of their own, represented by the Priest. When Oedipus listened to the people, he felt responsible over his duty and started searching for answers to save his city. Sophocles explains in his play how the city of Thebes totally depends in the quality of their leaders; this is where the populis had their only real power, the power of selecting their leaders and asking them to perform their duties.


In conclusion, the authors attempted to make the audience understand the different roles within the Athenians society, by assigning different weights of responsibility and power within class groups. "The Yellow Wallpaper" A theme of Inequality.


In Charlotte Perkins Gilman's short story, The Yellow Wallpaper, the theme of


social inequality for women, is further developed when the main character slowly goes


from post partum depression to severe manic depression, directly resulting from the


treatment prescribed by her husband physician.


At the time the story was written Ms.Gilman had herself recovered from a


depression despite the advice from a well noted physician, as she notes in her response to


critics in her article entitled, Why I Wrote The Yellow Wallpaper, which appeared in


the October issue of the Forerunner. (Gilman 1) "For many years I suffered from a severe


and continuous nervous breakdown tending to melancholia--and beyond. During about


the third year of this trouble I went, in devout faith and some faint stir of hope, to a noted


specialist in nervous diseases, the best known in the country. This wise man put me to


bed and applied the rest cure, to which a still-good physique responded so promptly that


he concluded there was nothing much the matter with me, and sent me home with solemn


advice to live as domestic a life as far as possible, to have but two hours intellectual


life a day, and never to touch pen, brush, or pencil again as long as I lived. This was in


1887. "


In the year of 1887 women were thought of as the weaker sex, their life was


limited to domestic duties, cooking cleaning and caring for children. Intellectual


activities such as writing were thought to be to hard on a woman. These ideas, mean that


women were confined to the home, unable to seek education, obtain jobs and control


money. For those women who husbands were able to afford housekeepers, whether the


wives wanted them or not, quite often even domestic chores where taken away. As we


see throughout the story, told in a first person account, the narrator has no name, she has


no identity except that of a sick woman who is being cared for by her physician husband.


We know she has a child, but the child is cared for by a servant, Mary. We know that all


other domestic duties are taken care of by her husbands sister, Jeannie, who is by the


narrator own words " [a] perfect and enthusiastic housekeeper, and hopes for no better


profession" (Gillman).


Lacking any stimulation at all, because her writing is forbidden, she has nothing


to do but rest, all stimulation is banned. Despite her own ideas, that some intellectual


stimulus is needed to make her feel better she follows the advice of her physician


husband. Advice that was common for the treatment of depression at the time,


especially for women included complete bed rest, cessation of domestic chores and no


writing. The debate still continues as to whether or not the male physician was really


trying to cure his female patient or harass her with a "bed rest cure" ( Rosenburg and


Rosenburg).


As "The Yellow Wallpaper"progresses we see that the narrator tells her physician


husband, John, she doesn't like the room to which they share. A large room with plenty


of windows, each with bars on them, the room is scarcely furnished, the wall paper a


sickly yellow, in her own terms. Each time she remarks on the wallpaper she hears her


husband laughs and remind her being in the room is for her own good. As a wife she has


no say in her own bedroom, as a patient she has no say in her recovery. It is no wonder


then that her depression takes hold and deepens. Unable to be creative in her own way


her mind struggles to define what is happening to her any way it can, and it does so in her


imaginings with the yellow wallpaper. The wallpaper is already rich with design, is a


source to magnify her feelings of being trapped in her life. Soon they have only three


weeks left in the home and she is unable to communicate with her husband her fears of


being behind bars, because he was the very person who placed her behind those bars. As


noted by Michael Mahin the theme is a "women as a prisoner". As her husband he fails


to see how miserable his wife has become, as a physician he holds to his treatment and


chooses to ignore the fact that she is not getting better.


It is within these boundaries that the story takes on social reference, inequality is


apparent for women. Unable to be the person she wants to be, a writer, mother and


wife, due to the influence of her husband she loses her mind to insanity. Everything she


does becomes associated with the paper, smells form the paper emanate throughout the


house, such as her husband has control of her entire life. Afraid to sleep with him at


night she sleeps during the day and watches the paper at night. During one of those


nights it dawns on her a way to escape the hold her husband has on her life, by removing


the wallpaper from the wall. In doing so she releases the woman, herself behind the bars,


stuck at night. As the day to leave gets closer, she works harder to remove the paper


from the wall, to release the prisoner. Eventually, her husband to comes home, to finish


the move and she has locked him out of the room, out of her life. A life that she now


controls, however mad it might be. But she cannot finish what she started, she cannot


completely remove all the wallpaper, it is to high to reach. She no longer wants to


leave the room it has become her safe place, she cannot look out the windows, because


she sees the creeping women. And wonders "[i]f they all come out of that wall-paper as I


did?" She has tied herself to the bed so she cannot be removed form the room. Her


plunge into madness is complete when her husband finds her crawling on the floor tied to


the bedstead, he faints and she creeps over him.


It is through this story that we can begin to understand the inequality women have


faced. Bound to play by societies strict rules of marriage and domestic duties, women


were left with nothing when they stepped out of the confines of that social structure.

Legalization of marijuana (also commonly referred to as weed, pot, reefer, or grass) in the United States has been a major debate ever since its prohibition in the 160's. If smoking enough potent marijuana (such as hashish), anxiety, panic attacks, and paranoia may also occur. Marijuana being sold today is typically 5 to 6 times more potent than marijuana being sold in the 60's, so instances of anxiety, panic attacks, and paranoia are happening more often. Another side effect is problem solving/thinking impairment. Combine thinking impairment with laziness (another side effect of using marijuana) and you have a person in an extremely inefficient state of mind for a work or school environment. That is why many people stereotype "pot-heads" as someone who dropped out of school, does not have a job, and sits around his/her parents house all day doing nothing for their future. Sadly, these stereotypes have a striking resemblance from what I've seen time and time again with people I know and care about. Some of these people are (or were) very close friends.


One particular friend comes to mind when thinking about why the stereotype is what it is. To hide his identity, I will refer to him as "Mitchell." Mitchell goes through a terrible cycle because of his habits. He gets a job, earns money, spends his money on weed, gets lazy, and quits his job. His bank account winds down to nothing as he withdraws large amounts of money for marijuana several times weekly. After he has no money left, he can not buy anymore pot and gets another job for money to contribute to his habit. If pot were to be legalized in the states, the amount of marijuana users would dramatically incline. This would cause some definite resistance for a nation that is rapidly progressing. It could cause a growth stunt for our society. Our nation does not need another few million Mitchell's smoking their future away.


Who says marijuana is not addictive? Marijuana may not cause physiological dependence (a change in a persons body chemistry), but it most definitely can cause psychological dependence. Psychological dependence is defined as "a pattern of compulsive or habitual use of a drug that serves a psychological need such as…escaping from stress." People using marijuana on a daily or semi-daily basis may learn to depend on getting high to overcome stress and every day problems. This means one may become dependant on marijuana. If one is dependant on a drug, then who can honestly say it is not an addiction?


If none of the previous information convinced you that pot should remain illegal, perhaps this will. Testing has shown that marijuana use can actually decrease a persons IQ score. The 00 study shows a heavy decrease in scores among current heavy users, with a slight decrease in scores among light users, or former users. The decrease in score is similar to the drop from an average person, to a person who was exposed to three or more alcoholic drinks a day while in the womb. The decrease is also greater than people who were pre-naturally exposed to cocaine or low levels of lead.


On a final note, marijuana continues to be seen as a gateway drug. If a person has a dealer to get marijuana from, chances are the dealer has other drugs, which will be for sale. Smoking reefer makes people laid back. Similar to hypnosis, this makes people more susceptible for suggestion and to try new things. In social situations, this could cause a person to be more open to try new drugs.


In the end, most people are biased on the subject (for either side of this ongoing debate) and need to be well informed with facts like these. Once again, marijuana has serious effects on the brain. This causes dangerous driving and lack of motivation to progress in life. Whether people want to believe it or not, weed is highly psychologically addictive. Using it causes a higher risk of experimenting with other drugs. Marijuana has been kept illegal over the years for a reason.

In the poem ‘Glasgow 5 March 171' by Edwin Morgan, the poet uses his language skills to cleverly portray a message about the violence, about Glasgow life and about how people often choose to ignore scenes such as what this poem describes.


The poem begins with an innocent young couple being falling through a shop window on Sauchiehall Street. The poem goes into great detail, describing how they were falling, the damage the glass had done and the expressions on their faces. Morgan then goes on to describe the two youths who committed this heinous act. The poem gave details of the youths faces during this vicious attack, which happened to show no emotion what-so-ever. Finally, we are informed of two people who were driving past, who chose to keep their eyes on the road instead of getting involved and trying to help this young couple, who at this point will be desperately needing all the help they can get.


To emphasize the incident Morgan uses many key words and phrases, such as the harsh sounding words used at the beginning of the poem. When the boy and girl are falling through the glass we are informed that the glass is "ragged" and that it "shattered" when they were pushed through it. By using the word shattered Morgan indicates that not only has the glass from the window shattered but the young couples lives and hopes have been shattered too.


Another harsh sounding word Morgan used was bristling. "The young man's face is bristling with fragments of glass". With use of this word, the poet gives us the impression that the fragments of glass have become like a beard on the man's face. This is excellent word choice as it helps us imagine the incident in greater detail.


The poet also describes this attack by informing us that the girl had on a "wet-look white coat". Morgan's description of the girls coat might have two meanings as we do not know if her coat is wet-look just because of the style, or because there is blood on the coat. This makes the attack seem more gruesome.


During the poem Morgan informs us that the couple's faces showed "surprise" and "shock" and showed only the "beginning of pain". These descriptions let us know that although the attack is over, the young couple have only begun to feel the pain.


Now the couple are done with, Morgan tells us that the youths are "about to complete the operation". This suggests that this assault was planned that the job is almost finished. The youths are now reaching into the shop to steal what they could "smartly". This word can suggest a number of things. Smart can mean this was done intelligently and also quickly. It can also mean that something hurts, which may be referring back to the innocent couple. Then we are told that "their faces show no expression". The youth's blank faces highlight their total disregard for other people's lives


Finally Morgan goes on to describe the two drivers in the background who witness the attack. "It is a sharp clear night". Use of the word sharp refers back to the broken window, and clear in forms us that the drivers could easily see the attack happening. "In the background two drivers keep their eyes on the road". This shows the ignorance of some people who, instead of helping people in need, decide to ignore the things which they do not want to see.


In this poem, Morgan uses an unusual technique where he looks at the poem as a series of photographs. Each photograph is described in great detail and each show an event of this attack.


The first photo described in the poem is of the couple falling through the window, bracing themselves for impact. Next is a picture of the youths that pushed the innocent couple, looting the shop from the window that the couple were pushed through. The last photograph features two drivers passing by who decided to ignore this sickening offence.


Morgan has cleverly included several themes in this poem, one of which is violence. Around this time Glasgow was a very violent place and this is reflected through the poet's description of this appalling crime which he may have witnessed. What makes this evil act worse is the fact that the innocent couple appear to be picked at random. This leads me to another theme of uncaring attitudes. HERE BEGINS THE BOOK OF THE TALES OF THE SUPER BOWL When the frigid air of January has blanketed every treetop and house alike with its gentle frost; when birds, squirrels, and the like are nowhere to be found close to home- then folks long to go on trips to temperate sites; and especially from every corner of the States they travel to Pasadena every few years, to watch The Super Bowl there; the finals for the great football season which has entertained them the past few months.


One day in that season when I went to Landesman Travel in Teaneck, ready to reserve a seat on an airline for Pasadena no matter what it took, I saw a sign for a special offer, half the price of what I had planned on spending, for a private jet to The Super Bowl; first seven people served. As I inquired, I discovered that I was the seventh and final person. We were to meet at terminal 76B at Newark Airport one half hour before scheduled take-off, 60 A.M. Super Bowl Sunday, to check the luggage and make acquaintances for the ride, which I am going to tell you about. But, nevertheless, while I have time and space, before I go farther in this account, it seems reasonable to tell you all about each of the passengers, as they appeared to me; who they were, and of what social status, and also what sort of clothes they wore. And I shall begin with the Sports Doctor.


There was among us a Sports Doctor who was a great follower of the Hippocratic oath, never neglecting any player who believed he was in need. He had preformed admirably in the Giants struggle for success, during which he had traveled near and far by their side, keeping the team in greatest health. Even in this time off of his, he wishes to be close by their side, front row by the Giants bench, giving his support, only morally not physically. He owns two foreign sports cars( how appropriate for his occupation) and his dress is most informal for a practicing doctor, just a buttoned down shirt and slacks.


Next was an Electrician, who worked quite diligently all week long and would help his neighbor no matter what hour of day. But if it would happen that any person in distress would require his assistance during the three tense hours of Giants football a week, on Sunday or even Monday night, he would apologetically decline and offer his service at the end of the game. When not at work, the Electrician would read the sports section of the newspaper or would watch Sportscenter on cable television. He was a fine, fat man, probably due to the excessive amount of beer which he consumed during the games. He wore T-shirts which were always tight on him and jeans just below his gut which exposed some of himself when he bent over to perform some task.


There was also a Student who was simple and was an underachiever at his community college which he rarely attended. He was encouraged by his parents to enjoy his youth so he set no goals for himself for the future. His father got him tickets to many important Giants football games, including The Super Bowl. He loved the Giants and watched all the rest of the games on television. He wore whatever was around, usually a casual shirt and jeans.


With him was his Girlfriend who was innocent and knew little about the game. The extent of her knowledge was that there are a bunch of guys in tight pants who throw and kick an oblong ball. Yet she enjoyed watching the games with the Student because of the expressions of joy she received from him when the Giants were successful in winning the game. She wore tight casual clothes, simple earrings, and light make-up.


The young Pharmacist was very popular and wasnt afraid to take a risk. He wasnt a true pharmacist but was called this because he supplied people with drugs to make them feel better. He didnt care much for football but received the tickets as payment for a smoking drug from a man who gave these away rather than having both of his arms broken. He had dark black skin and wore flashy clothes, his pants usually were quite low.


There was a very serious Lawyer among us. He was constantly engrossed in his work and very dedicated to his firm. He won the tickets from a raffle, but Im sure he would have preferred a new briefcase, his old one was beginning to fall apart because he took it everywhere with him. He would sometimes watch football when he was a child but has had nothing to do with it since then. He did have some vacation days to take off from work and it was a good time to go to California anyway. He always wore a black suit and his tie was never mussed.


Now I have told you about the status, dress, and the number of these passengers and why this group met at the airport which was in Newark. But now I must tell you what we did at the airport and afterwards I will tell you about the trip. But I ask you to forgive me for any vulgarity because I speak colloquially telling you the statements and actions of these people, if not directly quote them. Also forgive me for not arranging the people in authoritative importance as it should be.


Our Pilot made us all comfortable. He is a worthy pilot, and is witty, charming, and handsome. After we had paid our round trip fair, he boarded us onto the jet. He then addressed us on the loudspeaker Attention, lady and gentlemen, this is pilot speaking. Welcome aboard the private non-stop trip to Pasadena. Due to some technical difficulties, there will be no on-flight movie. To make your flight a little more enjoyable, Id like to make a suggestion. Each passenger will tell two tales each flight and the person who tells the best will receive a meal paid for by the others in the airport restaurant when we return to Newark. If you all agree, please pick a lot from a hat and the one who picks the paper with a 1 on it will start off. Enjoy your flight. In the passage By Any Other Name, by Santha Rau, she tells a story of when she was a five and a half year old little girl growing up in Zorinabad, going through the changes of moving and trying out public schools. There were other Indian children at the school that also had to put up with this same unfair treatment. They had to wear the "uniform" that consisted of a plain cotton dress instead of their beautiful Indian clothing. They were frowned upon for having anything other than sandwiches for lunch, and Santha and her classmate would sneak and show each other drawings that they had secretly done. The girls were going to public schools also because the exams and degrees from entirely Indian schools were not considered valid, which is just one more thing that made Santha's sister, Premila, upset. They had gone to school for a week when Premila had enough. Her class was about to take a test when her teacher told her and the other Indian children to sit in the back of the room and space themselves one desk between each child because, as her teacher told her, "Indians cheat," and Premila walked out. She went into Santha's classroom and got her, and they walked home. Now this was a big deal to walk home, they were from a prominent family who was very well taken care of. After they got home, she told her mother what had happened and they did not go back.


Hearing this story of Santha and her prejudiced school reminds me of a time when I was in high school. I was a member of the Flag Corps, and we had certain requirements that we had to follow. There was a printed rule book that each member had to follow or we would be given marks, and we were only allowed so many marks before they removed us from the squad. One rule we had to abide by was weight restrictions. We were weighed every Friday before the football games, before any basketball game we performed at, and before the Mardi Gras parades we marched in. Another rule we had to abide by was a simple rule; you could not miss school the day of or the day before a performance. And we had to make a G.P.A. of "C " or better with no ‘D"'s or "F"'s. We had big sisters and little sisters that consisted of the members that had been on the team for a year or more, and little sisters that consisted of the new team members. My second year on the team I was an officer, and as a big sister this particular year, we had two little sisters for every big sister. As an officer we got to vote on who was the best performer for the week, I had two very good team members as sisters, and as an officer I was encouraged to vote for my little sisters for Team Member of the Week. Every week I voted for the same sister, who I felt was better than any of the other girls, but she never got picked. The other officers voted for their friends, and never paid much attention to the lil' sis I had tried bringing attention to. Well, my lil' sis was voted to go to All-Stars and the highest two officers weren't. I felt my opinion had been over-looked, but I let it be. The captain of the team missed two performance day Fridays in a row so she could stay home and sun-bathe, and nothing was ever told to her. The co-captain was forty pounds over weight and nothing was ever told to her. These were all rules in the handbook we were told we would get marks for, and we would be punished for every mark by not being able to perform at the next performance. I got one "D" on my progress report and I was kicked off the team. I was told I could not go to the performance in Tennessee that I had already paid for and didn't get my money back from. I felt so cheated that I missed several days of school, and my outlook on school as a whole went down.


I feel that every person is entitled to their fair rights. I feel that each person should be treated equally and no rule should be bent for one person, no matter the circumstance. I felt like Santha's sister Premila, I felt I was being judged unfairly. I didn't take action and walk away from the problem, but I did have the same feeling of disgust in my stomach. I had to pay my price, and I am probably a better person for it in the long run. But to a teenage girl, I felt I had been betrayed by the other team members, the sponsors, and the whole school.

The term "Reality TV" is a classic marketing label. It has nothing to do with reality, but the media uses the term, so it sticks. It is an extended game show, or "human experiment calling itself something else," that zooms in on the small percent of privacy within the common individual, destroying the ideals of human dignity (Ford). (Quindlen). Entertainment today no longer promotes lighthearted humor and family values. Through ‘reality TV' people want to see others succumb to their fears for moneynot survival. If dehumanization reduces human beings from civil to savage, then reality TV dehumanizes; if indignation is the twinge of shame at the loss of privacy, then reality TV is damaging to human dignity. Therefore, it can be resolved that reality TV destroys the human morale.


Some claims advocate that reality TV helps educate and inform. For some, it is a matter of comfort watching someone else go through common drama in life. Educationally speaking, watching "Boot Camp", a military-training "survivor" look-a-like, or "The 100 House", the exposition of a family spending three months with 100s-era technology, can edify people allowing them to observe an attempt at survival in a more primitive environment. On an informative basis, a society can learn more about itself and it constituents by watching reality shows depict the mundane lives of its people. In 001, Russians suggested that its viewers watched reality shows because it provided a "window into the middle of a new generation and (showed) what kind of society Russia had become (Daniszewski)." In "Big Brother", it is primarily about intrusion of privacy, which is the most important element in human civility. Violating this would mean affecting human dignity. Forcing people to be silent while stuffed together in a prison-like home deforms human nature, since human beings are social animals. Likewise, "Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire?" forces emotions to blend simply for entertainment, thus promoting artificial and superficial relationships and emotions. This type of entertainment affects moral standards that people have about love, marriage, and relationships in general. Encouraging the antithesis of such moral beliefs disrespects human dignity and strikes out at deeply rooted values in modern society.
