In the first scene from the play King Lear that is written by the famous playwright William Shakespeare we witness King Lear who is poor at judging people and how he is blinded with beautiful words spoken by his evil daughters. The first act in King Lear is particularly significant in the play as it introduces the central characyers, relationships and themes explored throughout the play. In act one we are introduced to King Lear and his family, the Gloucester plot, which is parrallel to King Lears, and themes of nature, appearance versus reality, love and power.
The opening scene is very important for estabilishing Lears charcter and relationship with his daughters. In this scene we see that King Lear is unable to use his thought and emotion to see a person for whom he truly is. he can only read what is presented to him on the surface. King Lear, Gloucester and Albany are three examples of people who lack this ability. King Lears lack of insight kept him from making wise choices. This is the flaw that led to his downfall.
Lears first big mistake was letting himself be fooled by Regan and Goneril, and giving them his throne. Regan and Goneril sreak false exaggerated language in order to impress their father. Goneril, who is one of Lears daughters, is selfish and ruthless. When Lear asks her to acknowledge her love for him before he gives her part of his kingdom, she professes great love,
Sir I love you more than words can weild the matter (Act one Scene one line 57)
Regan who is the second of Lears daughters also speaks falsely of her love for her father. She says that she is,
made of that self metal as my sister, adding that I profess/Myself as enemy to all other joys/ Which the most precious square of sense possesses..
In your highness love (Act one Scene One line 68-75)
Cordelia, which is Lears youngest daughter, refuses to speak about blinding the love for her father. Instead she offered what was true. When she was pushed by her father to talkk like her sisters about her love for him, she says that,
I cannot heave/ My heart into my mouth I love your majesty/According to my bond; nor more nor less (Act one Scene one line ). In the words Cordelia utters we see the indiscreet simplicity of her love and the hollowness ofo her sisters pretensions.
In return for not lying as her sisters have done, she is banished by Lear and given nothing. Only later does Lear learn the truth that Cordelias love for him is true.
In Act one scene one we also see the two suitors, the Duke of Burgundy and the King of France who both want to marry Cordelia. Here we see how different the two men are when it comes to reality. The Duke of Burgundy stops wanting Cordelias hand in marriage when Lear makes it clear that she is no longer highly esteemed in his eyes. He is artificial. However the King Of France acts in a totally different manner when he learns about Cordelias fall from wealth. This King who can respcet Cordelias integrity takes her as his queen. The King of France comments in this scene, makes it clear
Fairest Cordelia, that art most rich, being poor;/Most choice forsaken;and most lovd, despisd! Thee and thy virtues here I seize upon (Act one Scene one line 5).
Kent tries to stand up to Lear in Cordelias honour, but L ear would not listen. To Kents words Lear responds with,
Kent on thy life no more. (Act one Scene one line 154)
Out of my sight! (Act one Scene one line 157)
Lear does not want to open his eyes. The more he is reminded of the truth the angrier he gets. He was being too stubborn to see that Kent was only trying to do what was best for Lear. It is his rash haste, his violent thoughtlessness and his blindness that produces all his misfortunes.
Shakespeare also includes the theme of nothing in this scene. this theme is very important as one can see throughout the play. Nature also plays an important part here. Lear tells Cordelia that neither human nature nor royal dignity can tolerate the way she has insulted him. King Lear expects all people to be virtuous, in other words, to tell him what he wants to hear.
Thorughout this scene we are given a clear view of the most important characters in the play. The way that Shakespeare uses language in their speeches shows us who they really are. Shakespeare creates tension and a feeling of falseness, which makes this scene truly dramatic. He also uses different feelings and emotions through the characters to show us how different the characters are and how big the difference between appearance and reality is!
