Characterization of Marcus

Marcus is twelve years old and lives with his mother Fiona in London. He goes through a remarkable development in the course of the novel.

Marcus characterizes himself as someone who is quiet and who likes reading and computer games (p.7, ll.10-11). Additionally, he seems to be the oldest twelve-year-old in the world (p.68, l.4). He often thinks about his mum, school, relationships and people in another way other kids his age might do. It is noticeable that he seems as considerate as an adult. For instance, he distinguishes between real trouble and troubles invented by people (p.75, ll.11-1). Often it also seems that Marcus takes care of his mother and not the other way around (p.74, l.7). It is him who tells Will and Fiona when to talk, and what to talk about (p.14, ll.6-7).

At the beginning of the novel Marcus feels completely alone. There is nobody who understands or helps him. He always loses arguments against his mother and nobody at school wants him to be his friend. This is the reason why he thinks he has a shit time at school and a shit time at home (p.44, l.). Both his outward appearance, like his out of date haircut and his uncool clothes, and his insufficient knowledge of pop music(p.8, ll.0-) and football players make kids laugh about him at school all the time.

Marcus is just different than other teenagers. At the Chrismas party Will is surprised how thankful and happy Marcus is about the presents, although they are not really great. He has a good heart and maybe, in contrast to other kids, he thinks that the presents are less important than the fact that they are given with love (p.181, ll.5-6).

Another difference is that Marcus and Will emphazise different values in a relationship. While Will always connects relationships with sex, Marcus considers things like spending time together, being alone and talking to each other as much more important (p.1, ll.0-).

So in his way of thinking and behaving Marcus is pretty much like an adult, but he is twelve years old, and Will realizes that Marcus needs help to be a kid, not an adult (p.164, l.7). Marcus contacts with Will and Ellie really lead to an essential change in his personality.

At the end of the novel Marcus becomes as robust and as unremarkable (p.06, l.0) as every other teenager. He becomes more self-confident and distances himself from his mother in a way that she feels as though (she is) losing him(p.05, l.4).

Although the old Marcus (is) disappearing (p. 0, ll.14-15), both Marcus himself and Will know that the new Marcus will be OK, because he has learned how to be a normal teenager (p., ll.1-, p.07 last line).
