What is thinking? Can machines think? If not, why not?
What is thinking? Thinking is one part computation based on interpretation of known facts, one part reasoning, and one-part ethereal interpretations of feelings.
Thinking is not just sheer computational reasoning. It incorporates all that is human. Thought processes are not just black and white they are often varying shades of gray. When a human being confronts a problem they think about it. Humans cannot just compute the answer. It is hard for humans to separate feelings from their thoughts. We even develop modes of trying to, but not completely eliminate feelings from the thought process via critical thinking. This does not mean humans are flawed due to feeling and bias. This is actually an asset in some circumstances.
Can a machine think? In the article, "The day I sensed a new kind of intelligence", by G. Kasparov he described playing an IBM computer in chess. Kasparov highly regarded as the human races foremost authority on chess actually lost to the machine the first time. He described the machine and it's programming as being able to analyze every move to completion of the game prior to moving a piece, as most know in chess this is a decided advantage when you can think ahead several moves. Obviously the computer was able to compare every move made in a scenario against a pre-programmed set of options and make a decision that was to the best of its knowledge the best course of action. The machine failed in future matches, when Kasparov started to vary his moves in irregular sequences. The computer disregarded the variations as insignificant but the creative chess master was able to use these variations to his advantage. This shows that a machine is only as good or as complete as it's programming. The ability for abstract reasoning, a big part of what we describe as sentience is missing.
Why not? It would be naïve to think a machine would never be able to give the appearance of being able to think. The programmed intelligence and technology may get to the point where there is un-measurable difference between the machines decision-making and that of its human counter parts. The true test of thinking is in the realm of the unknown; this is where humans with thought have a distinct advantage. Imagination…. A machine confronted with an unknown problem can only base decisions on known facts i.e. probability based computation of an outcome based on programmed data. A thinking sentient human being on the other hand has the ability to imagine unknown possibilities in order to hypothesize about an outcome, and maybe even react to feelings. Machines do not have this ability, at least not yet.
