Philip the Arab's career became prominent after he was appointed Praetorian Prefect to Gordian 111. (Marcellinu 45) Sources then indicate that an assassination of Gordian 111 occurred, leaving the rule to Philip. Philip was believed to have been the reason the assassination was carried out. (Marcellinu 45) He had used his influence to excite the soldiers and by prodding them, he had carried out his corrupt plan. (Smith 56)
As soon as Philip came into power, he began making changes. He made peace with the Persian King, Shapur, and travelled to Rome.
