In The Story of an Hour, Kate Chopins use of symbolism helps develop insight into Louise Mallards mindset.

Upon word of Brently Mallards death, Louise Mallard finds that the best way to cope with her husbands unexpected death is to have some time alone in her room. Chopin describes two very important features of the room. There is a comfortable, roomy armchair and a large open window.

The narrators use of several adjectives to describe the chair, such as comfortable and the fact that she sunk into it helps render the reader with a feeling of warmth and love, and as though her problems seems to have disappeared.

Through the large open window Louise is able to observe nature which proves to be very symbolic. She describes the sky as having patches of blue sky showing here and there through the clouds that had met and piled one above the other. The piled clouds symbolize her husbands oppression and the patches of blue sky symbolize her breaking away from her husbands control. The trees which she describes as aquiver with the spring life symbolizing her newfound excitement for life. There is a faint singing coming from outside and chirping of sparrows. All these elements bring together the sense of joy that poor Louise is feeling. Her eyes where gazed on the patches of blue sky which seem to suggest that she is looking to the future and forgetting her repressive past.

The first impression that the reader gets of Louise Mallard is not a pleasant one. She is described as having heart trouble. After news of her husbands death, Louise is portrayed as being young, with a fair, calm face. Her sense of hope has permeated her whole body and revitalized her mind and spirit which has made her to look more youthful.

Even though all these good thoughts are building up in her head, she is still too timid to express how she really feels. She wants to explode with joy but is succumbed by the cheer timing of her husbands sudden death. She is holding it back as powerful as her two white slender arms would have. By the author using word slender the reader gets the impression that she is not trying hard at all to hold it back. Louise is heard repeating the word free over and over again, and for once in her life she would be living for herself.

The window helped Louise perceive the wonderful world that she was about to enter. The author is quoting say that Louise was drinking a very elixir of the life through that open window.

The story ends with someone trying to open the front door of Louises home. To her surprise it was her supposedly dead husband Brently. This shock cause Louise to die, which was foreshadowed in the very beginning from the author describing that Louise was afflicted with heart trouble in the very first sentence.
